The availability of robust and simple kits for FMDV serology may contribute to the standardisation and harmonisation of results, and is crucial for countries involved in the control of FMD. 3. RESULTS - KITS PERFORMANCE
Diagnostic SPECIFICITY
 99.8% for SP-O Ab kit (4 false-positive in 2000 sera)
 100% for SP-A Ab kit (1621 sera tested)
 99.8% for SP-Asia1 Ab kit (5 false-positive in 2481 sera)
Diagnostic SENSITIVITY
Detection rate in full dose mono-vaccinated cattle (vaccine potency tests):
 85% for SP-O Ab kit (92% with VNT, 87% concordant results in 109 samples)
 90% for SP-A Ab kit (96% with homologous VNT/LPBE, 86% concordant results in 49 samples)
 100% for SP-Asia1 Ab Kit (100% with homologous LPBE, 100% concordance in 20 sera)
External validation - Sensitivity values using sera from vaccinated and/or infected animals positive to
homologous VNT :
 90% for SP-O Ab kit (261 sera)
 83% SP-A Ab kit (196 sera, against 14 different type A strains)
 100% for SP-Asia1 Ab kit (53 sera)
CONCLUSION: Validation studies proved adequate performances, irrespective of the strains that
elicited antibodies.
