This document summarizes Arnaud Bourdillon's master's thesis on numerical simulation of wave propagation. Bourdillon investigated using volume of fluid (VOF) methods, which are known to cause diffusive effects, to simulate wave propagation through the Isis-CFD software. By developing a process to control diffusive effects, Bourdillon was able to obtain simulation results that closely matched experimental data for problems involving wave reflection over a submerged bar, wave diffraction over a bump, and drag forces on a fixed cylinder. Application to free motion of a box in waves was more difficult. The thesis concludes that VOF methods can be used for several hydrodynamic engineering problems if a diffusive effects control process is employed.
