1. S.M.A.R.T.
Suburban Metropolitan Area Rapid Transit
Problem
Solution
Chicago is the 8th worst U.S. city for traffic. This is partially caused by the spoke system of
roads and public transit (Metra & CTA). All transit lines, the “spokes”, run straight from the
suburbs to downtown and intersect in the loop, the central “hub”. Currently there are no
connections between the spokes making it impossible to transfer directly from spoke to
spoke without first traveling through the hub.
S.M.A.R.T. Route
The S.M.A.R.T. initiative aims to create a system that makes Chicago and the surrounding
suburbs truly accessible via public transit. It will connect the “spokes” and complete our
system. Key features include substantial connections to existing transit and seamless
implementation into the existing landscape.
