Where and how does capital punishment fit in the larger framework of criminal justice?

For example, you can examine how the poems illustrate or dramatize certain aspect of the purpose or implementation of death penalty as presented by Foucault. 4) You could pick one, two, or three key themes from any of the works and discuss how the text fleshes out these themes and why they are important to our understanding of the period, or the particular writer, or to transcendentalism as a movement, or to American tradition or literature and so forth.
5) You could pick a theme which runs through several of the texts (for example, something about the role or nature of the individual) and trace it through its different configuration and representations.

We present a framework that combines machine learnt classifiers and taxonomies of topics to enable a more conceptual analysis of a corpus than can be accomplished using Vector Space Models and Latent Dirichlet Allocation based topic models which represent documents purely
in terms of words. Given a corpus and a taxonomy of topics, we learn a classifier per topic and annotate each document with the topics covered by it. The distribution of topics in the corpus can then be visualized as a function of the attributes of the documents. We apply this framework to the US State of the Union and presidential election speeches to observe how topics such as jobs and employment have evolved from being relatively unimportant to being the most discussed topic. We show that our framework is better than Vector Space Models and an Latent Dirichlet Allocation based topic model for performing certain kinds of analysis.

In your essay, you must make reference to Singer’s paper “Famine, Affluence, and Morality” and the paper you read in producing the annotated bibliography in Assignment #17. We present a framework that combines machine learnt classifiers and taxonomies of topics to enable a more conceptual analysis of a corpus than can be accomplished using Vector Space Models and Latent Dirichlet Allocation based topic models which represent documents purely
in terms of words. Given a corpus and a taxonomy of topics, we learn a classifier per topic and annotate each document with the topics covered by it. The distribution of topics in the corpus can then be visualized as a function of the attributes of the documents. We apply this framework to the US State of the Union and presidential election speeches to observe how topics such as jobs and employment have evolved from being relatively unimportant to being the most discussed topic. We show that our framework is better than Vector Space Models and an Latent Dirichlet Allocation based topic model for performing certain kinds of analysis.

This project is worth 10% of your final grade, due March 27, 2015. It is an individual assignment. Late assignments are penalized 5% per day including weekends to a maximum of 50%. Senate regulations require all term work to be submitted by the last day of classes April 8, 2015, after which work cannot be accepted and a grade of 0 will be given.
Write a 750-1200 word argumentative essay related to the topic of the responsibility of affluent nations and their citizens to people without even basic sustenance, discussed in Peter Singer’s paper “Famine, Affluence, and Morality.”
In your essay, you must make reference to Singer’s paper “Famine, Affluence, and Morality” and the paper you read in producing the annotated bibliography in Assignment #17. Both papers must be listed in your bibliography. Other sources may also be referenced but this is not required, though all sources used must be listed in the bibliography. Your project must begin with a standard form representation of your argument followed by a diagram of the argument, using between 10-15 premises. Your argument must include at least one deductive inference and one inductive inference and these must be identified (by type) and indicated on your diagram (i.e. on the arrow connecting the premises note “disjunctive syllogism” or “analogy”).
Quotations should be referenced in the text as follows:
“text” (author year, page number(s)). Note the final punctuation comes after the reference. If a text has to be altered slightly for grammatical reasons put the changes in square brackets.
E.g. Here we have some text I have written followed by a quote to verify my interpretation. If you wish to emphasize part of the quote use italics and note “my emphasis”, otherwise you might commit the fallacy of accent. In the passage I quote below, the emphasis was in the original, as noted. Where some text irrelevant to my purposes was left out I use ellipsis (…).
Fodor’s account of early language learning is an account of predicate acquisition and it remains the cornerstone for his thesis that we possess an innate representational system as rich as any natural language we can learn. “What, then is being denied?... that one can learn a language whose predicates express extensions not expressible by predicates of the representational system whose employment mediates the learning” (Fodor 1975, p.86, emphasis in original).

Most experts agree that they were constructed as burial monuments for pharaohs, but “how” these ancient people constructed monuments of such great size without modern machinery is a mystery which is still being debated.
No one can say for certain what happened to the great urban Mayan civilization, but theories abound and include varied possible alternatives to explain the relatively abrupt and mysterious disappearance of the Mayan civilization.
Tutankhamen died young, at approximately eighteen (18) years of age. However, his cause of death has been the subject of quite varied scholarly theories and conclusions. Did he die of an injury, of illness, of murder, or something else?.
Minoan Crete was a major civilization in its time, but several theories have been advanced to explain its demise, including speculations associating it with mythical Atlantis. What were the causes of Minoan Civilization's decline?
Great Zimbabwe is an enormous complex of structures in East Africa. Since the builders and occupants left no written records, several theories have developed as to the identity of its builders and the functions of the structures. Which theory makes the most sense?

After summarizing at least two (2) scholarly theories, identify one (1) of the theories as the most plausible and provide at least two (2) convincing reasons why the theory you have chosen is the best one to explain the mystery. This will involve some critical reasoning skills on your part.
