Cullman County in Alabama experienced a series of devastating tornadoes in April 2011 that damaged and destroyed thousands of trees. The local Extension staff developed an educational campaign using newspapers, social media, workshops and publications to provide residents with information on assessing tree health after the storms, selecting new trees, and proper planting and care techniques. This multi-pronged approach reached over 200,000 people and surveys found a 75% increase in knowledge among workshop participants. The campaign helped residents make informed decisions about managing their tree loss in the aftermath of the storms.
