History lovers, music lovers
and Athens lovers will all be ca-
tered to this Friday and Satur-
day as the Little Cities of Black
Diamonds Council presents the
10th annual Little Appalachian
Spring.
The weekend aims to cele-
brate the area and to raise funds
to maintain Little Cities of Black
Diamonds Council operations
such as educational programs,
publications, archives and infor-
mation services, said John Win-
nenberg, a founding member of
the council.
The Little Cities of Black Dia-
monds Council aims to “gather,
protect and share the stories of
the boom-to-bust Hocking Val-
ley Coal Region while develop-
ing its historical, cultural and
environmental assets for the
benefit of local citizens as well
as visitors to the microregion,”
Winnenberg said.
The celebrations kick off Fri-
day night with a war reenactment
by the Athens Civil War Celebra-
tion committee and a free con-
cert featuring Civil War music by
the Nelsonville-York High School
band and choir at Stuart’s Opera
House, 52 Public Sq.
Also opening Friday is “Little
Cities: Sustained by Clay,” an
exhibit at Stuart’s that empha-
sizes the role that the clay and
brick industries play in the local
economy.
“The clay industry helped
to sustain the economy in the
region through the ups and
downs of coal production,”
Winnenberg said. “It still sus-
tains us today by providing
a series of historic buildings
featured in National Register
of Historic Landmark Districts
in Nelsonville, Shawnee and
Haydenville, all featuring brick
structures from the boom era
that are in use today.”
Saturday morning will begin
with the 6th annual Tour de For-
est Benefit Bicycle Ride, which
will contain scenic routes for all
experience levels. After the ride,
walking tours of the area will
depart from Stuart’s.
The highlight of the week-
end, Winnenberg said, will be
the “Step into the Light!” show
that will take place at Stuart’s
Saturday night.
“This is the first time we have
hosted this specific event,” said
Brian Koscho, marketing and
promotions coordinator at Stu-
art’s. “But we have worked with
Little Cities of Black Diamonds
on multiple projects and events
in the past.”
Winnenberg said that all the
music is culturally connected to
the story of the region. Featured
musical performer Adam Rem-
nant’s work with Southwest En-
gine on their album Canary fo-
cused lyrically on Appalachian
trials and culture.
“In general, Appalachia was
being exploited for its natural
resources for quite a long time,
and by the time of the Depres-
sion these systems were no lon-
ger sustainable,” Remnant said
in a press release.
Also playing Saturday are
the Rattletrap String band and
Celtic musicians from the Ath-
ens area. The music will be in-
terspersed with living history
characters telling the history
of the area. Kathy Devecka, an
organizer of the event, will
“provide dramatic readings of
oral histories collected from the
daughters killed in Ohio’s larg-
est mining disaster,” according
to a press release.

WHAT DO YOU, BILL GATES and
Michael Dell all have in common? At one
point they were college students who
thought starting their own businesses
while in school. You can do this too. Why
not invest some of your time in setting
up a business to create an income for
yourself while you are in college?
Unless you are 100 percent certain that
you are in a major that will lead to the job
of your dreams, you may want to explore
this idea. Does it really make sense to
wait in longer and longer lines for fewer

another income stream for yourself

Spring cleaning offers a fresh
start and a way to ready for
warmer weather, and for the
eighth consecutive year, Athens
is getting its very own spring
cleanup.
The Off-Campus Life Com-
mission of Ohio University
Student Senate, in conjunction
with the City of Athens, The
Athens News and POWER 105/
WATH-AM, is hosting Athens
Beautification Day.
Athens Beautification Day
was founded by the OU Men’s
Club Water Polo team in 2005
as a community service event
dedicated to cleaning up Ath-
ens, said Thomas Raabe, the
Off-Campus Life commis-
sioner and a graduate student
studying public administra-
tion.
“Athens Beautification Day
has grown significantly each
year through more projects and
volunteers,” he said. “We have
about 600 people already signed
up and approximately 40 differ-
ent organizations.”
There are more than 25
projects scheduled throughout
the day ranging from scrub-
bing graffiti to helping repaint
some of the holes at Putt Peo-
ple First.
“I’ve reached out to perma-
nent residents as well, because
the goal is to also strengthen
the relationships between
residents and students,” Raabe
said. “The city is helping us
with reaching our goals.”
$5,400 has been raised for
supplies and T-shirts by the
City of Athens and various stu-
dent organizations, including
Student Senate and Division of
Student Affairs.
President Roderick McDavis
and Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl
will take part in Sunday’s kick-
off, and there have also been
many council members in-
volved over the years, said Ath-
ens City Councilwoman Chris-
tine Knisely.
“We all care about the com-
munity we live in, and to get
that many people out in one day
does an immeasurable differ-
ence in the community,” Knisely
said.
Dean of Students Ryan Lom-
bardi said he is looking for-
ward to this year’s Beautifica-
tion Day.
“This day provides an op-
portunity for students to give
back,” he said. “That’s really
critical to being a key citizen,
which is important to us here
at Ohio University.”
Donkey Coffee and Espresso,
17 ½ W. Washington St., will
serve drinks in the morning and
Kiser’s BBQ Shack, 1002 E. State
St., will serve lunch for the vol-
unteers in the afternoon.
“Giving back for one day is
really rewarding,” Raabe said.
“I think it’s a good opportunity
to meet different people, and it
can help you understand what
it’s like to live here for more
than just four years.”
WHAT: Athens Beautification Day
WHEN: 12 p.m. Sunday
WHERE: Scripps Amphitheater
