The psychoanalytic approach to studying folklore consists of using a culture's texts to
interpret symbols and meanings along with discovering the psychological concerns that
they had. This approach as a whole is problematic due to it only using the texts as a basis
rather than other sorts of remnants of the culture. Only using the text can be problematic in
the sense that it only captures what people recorded and, as we know, people cannot be
trusted to tell the truth let alone all that happened historically in their cultures. This
approach can also make it difficult to examine different specific aspects of a culture due it
them possibly not having anything physically written about them which is where one would
use methods such as looking into their traditions or talking to the descendants of the
culture.
