ECS 111 November 2016
These are suggested homework. You may also choose any of the articles introduced in class as a review topic. As discussed in class, you should not try and answer all of these. Choose one or two and do a complete essay on them. References should not be random blogs, but juried articles or news items from archived media such as NYT or the Economist.
1) Choose a wild animal and discuss its basic habitat and its role in this ecosystem or set of ecosystems. What is its current status relative to conservation concerns? What constitutes its primary food source?
2) Describe one of the major biomes found on earth. Include a discussion of its primary physical and biological attributes.
3) Compare and contrast two of the types of soil profiles discussed during the class. Discuss their distribution and the role they have in maintaining their associated ecosystems.
4) Discuss von Humboldt’s observation that the different biomes seen as one goes from the equator to the poles are also found with altitude in mountain systems. Why does this vary depending on which side of the mountain range is considered? Provide some examples.
5) Consider the following population equations.
Compute the steady states and discuss them. What type of system is this?
6) Discuss the immigration issues currently facing the European Union. How are these being handled by the various member states? Is this a threat to the EU itself? What are the consequences of these demographic shift in the Middle East?
7) Write an essay on the use of fire by human cultures. You might approach this broadly or focus on a particular culture such as the native Americans or the bantu of Africa.
8) What factors are involved in the transition of a forest ecosystem into a grassland? Consider the anthropogenic place in such transitions. What are the evolutionary issues here?
9) Consider a form of energy. Discuss the history of its exploitation and future use.
10) Consider the transport of energy and how technology has influenced particular types of energy sources. How have economics changed the exploitation of this type of energy?
11) Choose a particular disease and discuss its consequences for human health. Describe its role in history and its modern manifestations.
12) Read the section out of Keohane and Olmstead (2016) on competitive markets (pgs 70-78). Choose a commodity such as the one they use, coffee, and discuss the nature of the global market.
13) Using the principles in question 12) discuss the concept of competition in energy markets. How does this change if one is considering transportation costs versus electrical power? (Note: here you might peruse the index for energy topics they introduce. The section of scarcity starting on page 100 is also a useful place to start.)

Writing Assignment 1
EAPS 10000 Y01 Planet Earth
Online Course – Prof. L Braile
Summer 2016
June 8, 2016
June 8, 2016 – Writing Assignment 1: As discussed in the Syllabus, there are 3 writing
assignments during the course. WA 1 should include topics covered in Chapters I to 5 of the
textbook. See the Due Dates file (in the Course Content area of BB Learn) for due dates of
all assignments. Be sure to read all the instructions below. Please pay particular
attention to the plagiarism discussion (section 3, below)! In addition to
avoiding plagiarism, you must understand and use correct citation and
referencing in your paper (see more information and links to other citation
and referencing resources below). Also, be sure to read the information on
grading of the WAs that is included in the syllabus (page 6).
The writing assignments are short papers (short, informative research papers on a
geosciences topic) designed to allow you to explore (in greater depth) a topic of interest to
you that we have covered in about 5 chapters in the textbook.
1. Instructions (please read carefully): Write a 1½ to 2 page paper on a geosciences topic
of interest to you that is related to the material that we have covered in the textbook during
(approximately) the first one-third of the course (chapters I-5 or 6). Some suggested topics
are listed below, but you are free to choose other relevant topics for your paper. Your paper
must use 12 point, Times Roman font (or equivalent), be single spaced and utilize one
inch margins (sides, bottom and top). With these formatting choices, the 1½ to 2 page
paper (main body of paper, text only, not including references) should have 750 to 1000
words (750 words is the required minimum).
In addition, provide a references section at the bottom of your paper (or on a separate page)
listing your book, journal or internet (complete URL) references, and use citations in your
text to note quotations or specific information that you used from your references. In order
for a source to be included in your reference list, it needs to be cited in the text of your
paper. Also, be sure to use metric units (used almost universally in science) in your paper.
You can also add (optional) copies of a small number of figures, photos or tables to support
or illustrate the topics or concepts that you describe in your text. Figures, photos and tables
must include a caption and a citation showing the source.
2
It is not necessary to have a large number of references – two or three, or so, good
references are all that is necessary. You can use the textbook as a reference, but it
cannot be the only reference that you use.
The easiest (and recommended) way to handle references and citations is illustrated by the
examples below (the author's name(s); if more than 3, put first author's name "and others";
followed by the date of pub.
Each student will compare and contrast the physical geography of a p.docxLinaCovington707
Each student will compare and contrast the physical geography of a pair of assigned nations. This writing assignment is designed to provide students with a more in-depth understanding of prominent physical geography features in two different assigned nations. Additionally, the assignment will provide a more thorough understanding of human/nature interaction, along with environmental issues, within these nations.
Format:
Papers are to be
double-spaced, 12-font with 1-inch margins. No cover page is required. Have your name written at the top of the first page, with a title and page numbers
.
Your paper needs to be organized in paragraph form, including an intro and a conclusion. The intro paragraph needs to have a
specific
thesis statement
that gives an overview of your analysis of the material in its entirety (This is best written AFTER doing all the research and writing for the paper).
Any photographs, maps, tables, etc., need to be attached at the end of the paper only, and they
do not
count as part of the length of the paper. If you want to attach a cover page, it will also not count towards the paper length.
The amount of writing on each of your two countries should be roughly equal in length.
Sources, Bibliography:
You must have
at least 5 academic/scholarly sources
total and
list them in a bibliography
at the end of each paper
. Use
MLA or Chicago Manual of Style
which you can Google to find websites with examples of this format.
All sources MUST be
cited in the body of your paper (see “In-Text Citations” below) AND listed in a bibliography
, otherwise you will receive a score of ZERO for the paper and potentially an F for the entire course!
Copying and pasting over 20% of your paper from another source, without providing citations, is an automatic F.
The 4 parts of the course paper:
Part 1: Lithosphere
- For each country, what is one major geologic feature (can include mountains, desert, plains, coast, etc)?
- Briefly describe these features, how they came to look like how they do today.
- How are humans using these features (tourism, nature reserve, sacred lands, extracting resources, etc)?
- Does human use of these features create concern for the future of these features, or the wildlife found on them? If so, explain how.
- Print pictures of the geologic features, or maps showing where these features are located, and attach them to the back of the paper.
Part 2: Atmosphere
- For each country, describe the year-round climate found in the majority of the country (climate maps will help with this). If there is a wide variety of climate types in one country, just pick one city and describe its climate. Be sure to include information about temperature, precipitation, and seasonal changes in both, such as the extremes of the temperature and precipitation differences.
- Has climate change already impacted these nations (whether the people or the natural environment)? How so?
- What is one major concer.

Toward a Recovery of Nineteenth Century Farming Handbooks
While researching texts written about nineteenth century farming, I found a few
authors who published books about the literature of nineteenth century farming,
particularly agricultural journals, newspapers, pamphlets, and brochures. These authors
often placed the farming literature they were studying into an historical context by
discussing the important events in agriculture of the year in which the literature was
published (see Demaree, for example). However, while these authors discuss journals,

not put more than two images of places (e.g., mountain, volcano, river, etc.) Maps are veryimportant. You can focus on one particular place, resource or natural hazard in the country.Tables should include statistics such as amount of economjc minerals, rocks, ores or for hazards, type and number of disasters (primary/secondary hazards/effects), costs of property damage and loss of life etc.USE YOUR OWN WORDS. I do not wish to read what you can just copy/paste from Wikipedia or other resources. I will discount it immediately. If you use terminology or a phrase (which I will know you must have gotten from a reference, please reference it in the text of the paper. You should include a table of contents, introduction, geologic setting, historical information, sections describing what your focusing on (e.g. metal industry, forest resources, etc.) and bibliography.
However, while these authors discuss journals,
newspapers, pamphlets, and brochures, I could not find muc ...

Assignment 2: Discussion—Species Interactions and You
Humans interact with various species every day without actually realizing it. In the field of ecology, these interactions can either be interspecific (between species) or intraspecific (within species). Interactions between humans are known as intraspecific (within species) interactions. For example, interactions between a human and a pet would be interspecific, whereas interactions between a human and another human would be intraspecific.
Research interspecific and intraspecific interactions using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet.
This assignment has
two
parts. Complete both parts.
Part A
Complete the following:
Track your interactions with other organisms—between and within species—for one day.
Summarize your interactions throughout the day, using the terms from this module’s readings. If required, review the module’s readings again.
At a minimum, identify ten interactions that you witnessed or participated in today. Among those interactions, you should be able to identify a predatory-prey relationship, a competitive relationship, and a mutualism. You could also identify parasitic relationships or commensalisms, if you choose. Although you can repeat interaction types—for instance, you can have multiple mutualisms—the examples must differ. These are some examples:
Did you have a predatory-prey relationship with a chicken today? That is, did you eat chicken for lunch?
Did you have a competitive relationship with a coworker today? That is, were you competing for a raise?
to download this template to track interactions with organisms.
Part B
Respond to the following:
For every interaction you identified above, describe an interaction in nature that is similar to what you experienced or witnessed. For example, if you had a predatory-prey interaction with your meal, identify and describe an example of a predatory-prey interaction in nature. Or, if you had a competitive interaction with your coworker, identify and describe a competitive interaction in nature.
Using the information you reviewed, explain why it is important to recognize these interactions.
Support your statements with appropriate examples and scholarly references.
Using the information that you compiled above, summarize your interactions for the day. Be sure to classify your interactions (parasitic, mutualism, etc.) and that you also determine if the interactions are considered intraspecific or interspecific.
Write your initial response in a minimum of 300–350 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

ECS 111 October 2016
These are suggested homework. You may also choose any of the articles introduced in class as a review topic. As discussed in class, you should not try and answer all of these. Choose two and do a complete essay on them.
6) Choose a fishery and describe its attributes. What are the target species? Is this particular fishery sustainable? How does this fishery deal with issues such as markets, management techniques, and bycatch?
7) Discuss the immigration issues currently facing the European Union. How are these being handled by the various member states? Is this a threat to the EU itself? What are the consequences of these demographic shift in the Middle East?
8) Write an essay on the use of fire by human cultures. You might approach this broadly or focus on a particular culture such as the native Americans or the bantu of Africa.
9) What factors are involved in the transition of a forest ecosystem into a grassland? Consider the anthropogenic place in such transitions. What are the evolutionary issues here?
10) Consider the tundra biome and its physical attributes. What uses of this biome by various countries have affected these regions in the past one hundred years?
11) Discuss the advent of big agriculture and the demographic shifts in human populations. How has it influenced property ownership? Has it effected our diets and health? Consider examples and provide proper references.
12) Discuss the concept of plantations versus communal ownership. You might consider how the shift in these has influenced agriculture and forestry.
13) Consider the idea of federal leasing of grazing lands. Compare this practice in the west versus our management of fisheries. How does the tragedy of the commons enter into these two activities?

You could also identify parasitic relationships or commensalisms, if you choose. Although you can repeat interaction types—for instance, you can have multiple mutualisms—the examples must differ. These are some examples:
Did you have a predatory-prey relationship with a chicken today? That is, did you eat chicken for lunch?
Did you have a competitive relationship with a coworker today? That is, were you competing for a raise?

Assignment 3: Environmental Issues and ...
ECS 111October 2016These are suggested homework. You may.docxSALU18
ECS 111 October 2016
These are suggested homework. You may also choose any of the articles introduced in class as a review topic. As discussed in class, you should not try and answer all of these. Choose two and do a complete essay on them.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

1. Hawksbill sea turtle Conservation & Management
Management/Conservation Paper Specifications You will be writing a short scientific paper
on the management and/or conservation of your species that will be worth 100 points. This
should include information about the threats, management (if relevant) and potential
solutions to issues facing your species. CRITICAL COMPONENTS 1. Text – 2 FULL pages
TOTAL: A. Threats overview (approximately 0.5 page): Give an overview and summarize the
different kind of threats facing your species. These may include but not limited to: bycatch,
climate change, resource competition with humans, poaching, or directed harvest (e.g.,
overexploitation of commercially valuable species). B. Focus on a single threat
(approximately 0.5 page): Go into more detail on a single (or multiple closely related)
threat. For example, you may focus on the bycatch levels of a species in several different
fisheries or gear types, where it occurs, and the impacts on population levels. In this section,
focus on describing the threat, its extent, and the impact it has on the population. C.
Management or conservation efforts (approximately 0.5 page): In this section, discuss and
summarize the management or conservation efforts that have been used to try to mitigate
threats to your species, ideally focused on the threat you focused on above (though it may
cover more than that single threat). For example, if the threat you focused on was bycatch,
perhaps you found papers that discuss closed fishing areas to reduce bycatch or the use of
different gear modifications. The efforts you discuss should come from the primary (e.g.,
journal articles) or secondary literature (e.g., government reports), NOT from webpages. 2.
Figures: Include at least one figure in your paper. This should be at the end of the paper
after the literature cited, and does not count towards your three pages. The figure should be
a figure drawn from the primary or secondary literature about your species such as a map
of where bycatch occurs; note that this figure should not be a photo. This is a figure that
comes directly from one of your sources, not one you make yourself. Your figure should be
properly referenced in the text. For example: Penguins were predicted to be found in the
eastern part of the Ross Sea (Ainley et al. 2010, Figure 1). Caption for the figure should also
be included, but write your own caption that interprets the figure for the reader, and cite
the paper the figure is from. For example: Figure 1. Map illustrating the distribution of king
penguins during winter based on several oceanographic characteristics throughout the Ross
Sea using generalized additive mixed models. Model predictions show that penguins are
more likely to be found in the eastern part of the Ross Sea. Source: Ainley et al. 2010. 3.
References: You must include three references from the primary literature or from an
edited book volume or from a government report (note that government reports are the
2. only acceptable reports). Primary scientific literature most often will be journal articles that
have a ‘Materials and Methods’ section and ‘Results’ section, and authors may use ‘we’ or ‘I’
to describe what was done. They are usually very specific: mentioning particular places,
organisms, etc. These references should be listed on a separate page at the end of your
paper (but before figures) and do not count towards your 2 pages. In citing your references,
may use Endnote (available for free through ODU Software Services:
https://www.odu.edu/ts/software-services/endnote) or done by hand; your references
should be done using the style of the journal Ecology. Your citations should look like this: a.
In text, sources should be cited as: i. One Author: (Author Year) 1. Example:(Agardy 2000) ii.
Two Authors: (Author 1 and Author 2 Year) 1. Example: (Abbott and Wilen 2011)(Abbott
and Wilen 2011) iii. Three Authors: (Author 1 et al. Year) 1. Example: (Abascal et al. 2011)
b. How to cite sources at the end of your paper: i. For a journal, the information should be
listed as: Author 1, Author 2 and Author 3. Year. Title. Journal Volume: Pages. 1. Example:
Abascal, F. J., M. Quintans, A. Ramos-Cartelle, and J. Mejuto. 2011. Movements and
environmental preferences of the shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus, in the southeastern
Pacific Ocean. Marine Biology 158:1175-1184. ii. For a book, information should be listed
as: Author 1 and Author 2. Year. Book title. Publisher, City. 1. Example: Kenward, R. 1987.
Wildlife Radio Tagging: Equipment, Field Techniques and Data Analysis. Academic Press,
London. iii. For an edited book, information should be listed as: Author 1 and Author 2.
Year. Book section title. Pages XX-XX in Editor name. Book name. Publisher, City. 1.
Example: Butler, P. J. 1993. To what extent can heart rate be used as an indicator of
metabolic rate in free-living marine mammals? Pages 317–332 in I. L. Boyd, editor. Marine
Mammals: Advances in Behavioral and Population Biology. Clarendon Press,
