Madras Boat Club saw over a 100 participants take to
the waters of the Adyar to row in the 3rd edition of the
Head of the Adyar on May 18. Participants ranged from
teenagers to senior citizens, all of them came together for
the love of rowing.
This year, the newly introduced V.A Kurien Rolling
Trophy for Coxed Eights saw the Madras Boat Club
crew rowing against a combined crew from other Clubs
(Madras Gymkhana Club, Royal Madras Yacht Club,
Cosmpolitan Club). Madras Boat Club won by a narrow
margin of 3 seconds. A press release said, In addition,
two crews comprising of current and former students of
Anna University and Madras University competed for the
Inter University Trophy and a crew from Sishya School
raced against 2 crews from other city schools. Other
Madras Boat Club members rowed in several categories
– single sculls, double sculls, coxless pairs, coxed fours,
and quadruple sculls.
Information of Head Race:
The Head of the Adyar is a 3.5 km race starting from
The Broken Bridge at the mouth of the river and ending
at Madras Boat Club. Head of the River races are against-
the-clock races where crews do not start together but
one after the other. The start and finish time for each boat
is noted and the crew with the best time in its category
wins.
Madras Boat Club is the only private club in India to
have an Eights. The VA Kurien Rolling Trophy for the
Coxed Eights was the highlight of the event. The Boat
Race was conducted for the first time in such an event
in India. Madras Boat Club, a 152-year-old Club, hopes
that this event will become a regular and prominent
fixture in the city’s sports calendar, much like the Oxford-
Cambridge Boat Race on the Thames River in London.
The Head of the Adyar was also an opportunity to
build awareness about the condition of water bodies
in our city and note that we, as citizens, can and must
contribute to conserving our natural resources. As part
of its commitment to sustainability, Madras Boat Club
has recently installed solar panels at its premises and is
looking to making the Club more ‘green’.
Madras Boat Club has always encouraged students to
take up the sport of rowing. Students can become student
members at a nominal rate and are taught by senior,
experienced members. Student members of Madras Boat
Club get the opportunity to row in inter-Club, as well as
National-level competitions.
Student membership is open to all bonafide students
including children of non-members.

of Boats - 9884306715 | rowing@madrasboatclub.com

Participants ranged from teenagers to senior citizens, all of them came together for the love of rowing. This year, the newly introduced V.A Kurien Rolling Trophy for Coxed Eights saw the Madras Boat Club crew rowing against a combined crew from other Clubs (Madras Gymkhana Club, Royal Madras Yacht Club, Cosmpolitan Club). Madras Boat Club won by a narrow margin of 3 seconds. A press release said, In addition, two crews comprising of current and former students of Anna University and Madras University competed for the Inter University Trophy and a crew from Sishya School raced against 2 crews from other city schools. Other Madras Boat Club members rowed in several categories – single sculls, double sculls, coxless pairs, coxed fours, and quadruple sculls. Information of Head Race: The Head of the Adyar is a 3.5 km race starting from The Broken Bridge at the mouth of the river and ending at Madras Boat Club. Head of the River races are against- the-clock races where crews do not start together but one after the other. The start and finish time for each boat is noted and the crew with the best time in its category wins. Madras Boat Club is the only private club in India to have an Eights. The VA Kurien Rolling Trophy for the Coxed Eights was the highlight of the event. The Boat Race was conducted for the first time in such an event in India. Madras Boat Club, a 152-year-old Club, hopes that this event will become a regular and prominent fixture in the city’s sports calendar, much like the Oxford- Cambridge Boat Race on the Thames River in London. The Head of the Adyar was also an opportunity to build awareness about the condition of water bodies in our city and note that we, as citizens, can and must contribute to conserving our natural resources. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Madras Boat Club has recently installed solar panels at its premises and is looking to making the Club more ‘green’. Madras Boat Club has always encouraged students to take up the sport of rowing. Students can become student members at a nominal rate and are taught by senior, experienced members. Student members of Madras Boat Club get the opportunity to row in inter-Club, as well as National-level competitions. Student membership is open to all bonafide students including children of non-members.
