The Tricanas Poveiras were the wives of fishermen in northern Portugal. Since their husbands were often away fishing, the Tricanas took on jobs like sewing or working in canneries to support their families. They wore elegant, distinctive costumes to distinguish themselves, including silk blouses, knee-length skirts, colorful rolled aprons, silk stockings, and delicate heels. Modern costumes for parades are inspired by the traditional Tricanas costumes but are more elaborate, though the rolled apron remains an essential piece. The parades now feature more colorful, grand dances but the original elegance of the Tricanas costumes is still remembered.
