Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson were exceptional, pioneering women who overcame racial barriers and became mathematicians at NASA during the era of the Space Race. They were part of a group of African-American women in the West Area Computing unit of NASA, beginning in the 1950s, which played a major role in the early stages of the space program. In November 2019, the three women were awarded Congressional Gold Medals for their accomplishments. The medals were awarded posthumously to Vaughan and Jackson. Johnson was 101 years of age and the only one living at the time of the award. The primary story of Hidden Figures was Johnson, through her computational genius, assisting astronaut John Glenn to accomplish the Friendship 7 mission. She passed away in February 2020.
