Levantine Films Adapts Socially Relevant Novels for FilmJamal Daniel
Drawing on more than 30 years of investment experience in the areas of oil and gas, technology, and real estate, Jamal Daniel serves as chairman of Crest Investment Company. Additionally, Jamal Daniel is the founder and CEO of Levantine Films, an independent production company that develops and finances character-driven stories.
Founded in 2012, Levantine Films seeks out and produces socially relevant stories with the potential for commercial success. In 2020, Levantine Films secured the film rights to the best-selling graphic novel series Killadelphia: Sins of the Father, created by Jason Shawn Alexander and Rodney Barnes. In the crime horror noir series, James Jr. returns to his native Philadelphia after the death of his estranged father, respected detective James Sangster Sr. After discovering his father’s journal, James must follow in his footsteps to solve a series of supernatural murders.
In addition to Killadelphia, Levantine Films holds film rights to Tahereh Mafi’s young adult novel A Very Large Expanse of Sea, which follows a Muslim girl in New York City a year after 9/11.

Based in Houston, Jamal Daniel chairs the Crest Investment Company and also guides the private, nonprofit, Levant Foundation. Through the latter organization, Jamal Daniel seeks to expand knowledge of the Middle East’s Levantine region and of its defining monotheistic religions, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.
One publication that encapsulates much of what the Foundation stands for is the RAND Corporation’s “Estimating the Economic Benefits of Levant Integration.” The focus of the independent research is on the potential of a comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) in boosting countries such as Egypt, Israel, Iraq Turkey, Syria, and the Palestinian Territories.
Over the past three decades, efforts to strengthen economic relationships across the Eastern Mediterranean have been persistent, though not well coordinated. A number of bilateral economic agreements exist, but a broader framework of integration remains elusive. An FTA would boost gross domestic product by as much as seven percent, in the process generating 700,000 to 1.7 million new jobs.
One aspect of this would be eliminating tariffs that stand in the way of free flow of goods and services. In addition, increased interconnection and stability would encourage new investments. These could range from industrial and real estate projects, to those that promote travel and tourism.
The RAND report singles out the Syrian conflict and its ripples of instability as one major challenge that needs to be addressed as part of any comprehensive framework. Cultural exchange, dialogue, and inclusive political perspectives are just some of the necessary ingredients in providing momentum toward a multi-state FTA.

Killadelphia - Sins of the Father’s TV AdaptationJamal Daniel
An investor with over 30 years of experience, Jamal Daniel is the chairman of The Levant Foundation. In June of 2021, Jamal Daniel’s charity bought the rights to adapt the graphic novel Killadelphia: Sins of the Father (shortened to Killadelphia) into a television series.
Written by Rodney Barnes and Jason Shawn Alexander, Killadelphia is in the noir genre, with horror and crime procedural influences. Following police officer James Sangster Jr., the graphic novel and prospective TV series will explore the events surrounding Sangster’s father’s mysterious death. Sangster combs through his father’s journal, and he finds details of his father’s last case, regarding a series of seemingly-supernatural murders.
Image Comics initially released Killadelphia in November of 2019, and a paperback version was published in June of 2020. Assisting Levantine with the adaptation, Barnes’ past screenwriting credits include The Boondocks and Wu-Tang: An American Saga. Alexander’s prior work include his own graphic novel series Empty Zone, and Spawn, with Todd McFarlane.
New Books Seek to Revitalize Nubian Language in AfricaJamal Daniel
Based in Houston, Texas, investment executive Jamal Daniel is the founder of the Middle East scholarship-focused organization Levant Foundation. Also guiding the Al-Monitor, Jamal Daniel provides objective journalism covering politics and culture across the Middle East.
An October 2021 piece in the Al-Monitor brought focus to a unique children’s book project that involves a trio of Nubian-Sudanese authors. The books are among the first ever in the Nobiin language, which is spoken across northern Sudan and southern Egypt and uses an alphabet passed down from centuries-old manuscripts.
While the Nubian language is considered one of Africa’s most ancient traditions, the Nubian alphabet has virtually disappeared. This occurred after the Kingdom of Makuria’s dissolution and Ottoman occupation of the Lower Nubia, when Arabic and Latin became prevalent.
These illustrated books present stories and help develop literacy and counting skills. They were created with support from crowdfunders and printed by London’s Taras Press.
Unique Egyptian Soccer Team with Christian Identity Takes RootJamal Daniel
Based in Houston, Jamal Daniel oversees a portfolio of investment holdings and is also director of The Levant Foundation, which focuses on furthering knowledge and appreciation of the Middle East’s monotheistic religions. As head of Al-Monitor, Jamal Daniel also oversees a media company known for its unbiased regional perspectives.
A February 2021 Al-Monitor feature explored a unique Egyptian football team, the Je Suis (I Am) Club, which was founded by Christian soccer pro Mina Bendary. The impetus for the team came when Bendary joined the Alexandrian Union Club of the Egyptian Football Association in 2015 and was asked to take a non-Christian name, “Ibrahim,” instead of Mina.
After six months on the squad Bendary, facing questions from his church and colleagues, left to start his own team. His vision was a club that would celebrate and support other Christian athletes who faced a similar situation. The result has been a club that has accepted players without barriers when it comes to cultural and religious identifications. In addition to helping Christians achieve success, Je Suis Club has welcomed Muslim players. Having grown from 20 to 140 players, it now competes within the fourth level of the Egyptian League.
Hidden Figures - Three African-American Heroines Triumph at NASAJamal Daniel
As president and chairman of Crest Investment Company, Jamal Daniel manages a portfolio of investments in real estate, oil and gas, media, and technology. Jamal Daniel is also the chairman of the Levant Foundation and the founder and CEO of Levantine Films.
Founded in 2012, Levantine Films is an independent film production company that searches for, produces, and finances movie projects that focus on character development, social impact, and profitability. One of the company’s biggest successes has been Hidden Figures, a biographical drama that received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress.
The movie is based in 1960s Virginia, when Black men and women suffered from discriminatory laws and other harsh practices. It follows three brilliant women, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, who became the brains behind the mathematical calculations at NASA that enabled the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit.
Nasa managers called them “computers,” skilled mathematicians who, despite all the pains that came with being labeled “colored,” have aspirations, strength, and skills to prove their worth. Dorothy Vaughan, who assumed the responsibilities of a supervisor, bravely asked for a formal promotion only to be rejected for no reason other than her race. Mary Jackson, an outspoken yet optimist mathematician, saw her dreams of becoming an engineer met with a series of setbacks. Without any legal representation, Mary had to make a personal plea before a judge to allow her to attend night classes at a whites-only school. And Katherine Johnson, a mathematical genius chosen to join the Space Task Group, had to overcome one blunt racial offense after another before anyone in the group could accept her vital role.
All three women faced conflicts and challenges that were nonexistent to the rest of the population. Although the movie's overarching theme was the lack of equal rights between black and white men and women, the individual story of the three heroines - their authenticity, genius, and vigor - proves that fighting for justice is a battle that can sometimes be won.

NLI and Its Regional Aspiration Expressed Through MusicJamal Daniel
A successful entrepreneur, Jamal Daniel, has utilized his considerable resources to establish organizations that provide a better understanding of Middle Eastern Levantine culture and history. Among Jamal Daniel's undertakings is founding and leading the New Levantine Initiative (NLI).
The Levant is the coastal region spanning the eastern Mediterranean, bordering Egypt in the South, and Syria to the North. An area with a distinct history and culture, after WWI it developed into individual states. Some believe the area has lost its own sense of unique identity. The NLI aims to rejuvenate the common Levantine Identity through the development of community-centered programs. One of its initiatives was commissioning renowned musician and composer Ibrahim Maalouf to compose the Levantine Symphony No. 1.
The music is a celebration of the dynamic and shared oneness of the Levant. Maalouf characterizes the composition as a ballad to the Levant. It’s music that is both robust and fragile, Near Eastern with Western influence and attempting to bind the shared cultures of the Levantine. The music aspires for a once again progressive and unified new Levant. To know more about the innovational NLI, visit www.new-levant.org.

In November 2019, the three women were awarded Congressional Gold Medals for their accomplishments. The medals were awarded posthumously to Vaughan and Jackson. Johnson was 101 years of age and the only one living at the time of the award. The primary story of Hidden Figures was Johnson, through her computational genius, assisting astronaut John Glenn to accomplish the Friendship 7 mission. She passed away in February 2020.

Egyptian Street Music Faces Ban Over Controversial LyricsJamal Daniel
Based in Houston, Texas, Jamal Daniel serves as chairman of the Crest Investment Company and guides Al-Monitor, which offers objective reporting on diverse news and cultural facets of the Middle East. A recent feature in Jamal Daniel’s publication brought focus to a move by the Egyptian Musicians Syndicate to ban “mahraganat,” a piece of popular music associated with the impoverished neighborhoods of Cairo.
Originating two decades ago, mahraganat has the meaning “festivals” in Arabic and combines folk traditions with electronic beats. The style became a flashpoint for controversy on February 14th, as a song by singer Hamo Bika, "Bent el-Geran" ("The Neighbor's Daughter”) gained 60 million SoundCloud listens and more than 100 million Youtube views.
The song features a controversial lyric about drinking alcohol and smoking hashish to get over heartbreak, which goes against Islamic moral precepts. It was notably performed by singer Hassan Shakoosh at a Cairo International Stadium concert on Valentine's Day, with the offending lyrics removed.
The virality of the song led to mahraganat singers being banned from performances at cafes and nightclubs, as well as at tourist venues and on Nile cruises. Hamo Bika has filed a lawsuit against the ruling, which has been viewed by many as placing onerous restrictions on taste and stifling a mode of expression open to young artists who want to address societal problems.

Jamal Daniel serves as the chairman of Crest Investment Company, an investment management firm located in Houston, Texas. Additionally, Jamal Daniel founded the New York-based production company Levantine Films, which focuses on developing character-driven films like 2016's Hidden Figures.
Generally, movies can be defined as either character-driven or plot-driven. Character-driven movies, as the name implies, are focused on internal changes or conflict taking place within the characters, who are typically complicated personalities with features that are exposed as the story develops. The audience considers the personality, attitude, and decisions of the characters and how the internal changes they experience shape the story’s outcome.
By comparison, movies that are plot-driven emphasize the story itself, which develops through plot twists, action scenes, and external conflict. Characters in a plot-driven movie are often forced into situations requiring quick decisions, which in turn place character development second to the rapidly developing story.
