Levantine Films Adapts Socially Relevant Novels for Film
Drawing on more than 30 years of investment experience in the areas of oil and gas, technology, and real estate, Jamal Daniel serves as chairman of Crest Investment Company. Additionally, Jamal Daniel is the founder and CEO of Levantine Films, an independent production company that develops and finances character-driven stories.
Founded in 2012, Levantine Films seeks out and produces socially relevant stories with the potential for commercial success. In 2020, Levantine Films secured the film rights to the best-selling graphic novel series Killadelphia: Sins of the Father, created by Jason Shawn Alexander and Rodney Barnes. In the crime horror noir series, James Jr. returns to his native Philadelphia after the death of his estranged father, respected detective James Sangster Sr. After discovering his father’s journal, James must follow in his footsteps to solve a series of supernatural murders.

Based in Houston, Jamal Daniel chairs the Crest Investment Company and also guides the private, nonprofit, Levant Foundation. Through the latter organization, Jamal Daniel seeks to expand knowledge of the Middle East’s Levantine region and of its defining monotheistic religions, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.
One publication that encapsulates much of what the Foundation stands for is the RAND Corporation’s “Estimating the Economic Benefits of Levant Integration.” The focus of the independent research is on the potential of a comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) in boosting countries such as Egypt, Israel, Iraq Turkey, Syria, and the Palestinian Territories.
Over the past three decades, efforts to strengthen economic relationships across the Eastern Mediterranean have been persistent, though not well coordinated. A number of bilateral economic agreements exist, but a broader framework of integration remains elusive. An FTA would boost gross domestic product by as much as seven percent, in the process generating 700,000 to 1.7 million new jobs.
One aspect of this would be eliminating tariffs that stand in the way of free flow of goods and services. In addition, increased interconnection and stability would encourage new investments. These could range from industrial and real estate projects, to those that promote travel and tourism.
The RAND report singles out the Syrian conflict and its ripples of instability as one major challenge that needs to be addressed as part of any comprehensive framework. Cultural exchange, dialogue, and inclusive political perspectives are just some of the necessary ingredients in providing momentum toward a multi-state FTA.
Killadelphia - Sins of the Father’s TV Adaptation
An investor with over 30 years of experience, Jamal Daniel is the chairman of The Levant Foundation. In June of 2021, Jamal Daniel’s charity bought the rights to adapt the graphic novel Killadelphia: Sins of the Father (shortened to Killadelphia) into a television series.
Written by Rodney Barnes and Jason Shawn Alexander, Killadelphia is in the noir genre, with horror and crime procedural influences. Following police officer James Sangster Jr., the graphic novel and prospective TV series will explore the events surrounding Sangster’s father’s mysterious death. Sangster combs through his father’s journal, and he finds details of his father’s last case, regarding a series of seemingly-supernatural murders.
Image Comics initially released Killadelphia in November of 2019, and a paperback version was published in June of 2020. Assisting Levantine with the adaptation, Barnes’ past screenwriting credits include The Boondocks and Wu-Tang: An American Saga. Alexander’s prior work include his own graphic novel series Empty Zone, and Spawn, with Todd McFarlane.
New Books Seek to Revitalize Nubian Language in Africa

An October 2021 piece in the Al-Monitor brought focus to a unique children’s book project that involves a trio of Nubian-Sudanese authors. The books are among the first ever in the Nobiin language, which is spoken across northern Sudan and southern Egypt and uses an alphabet passed down from centuries-old manuscripts.
While the Nubian language is considered one of Africa’s most ancient traditions, the Nubian alphabet has virtually disappeared. This occurred after the Kingdom of Makuria’s dissolution and Ottoman occupation of the Lower Nubia, when Arabic and Latin became prevalent.
These illustrated books present stories and help develop literacy and counting skills. They were created with support from crowdfunders and printed by London’s Taras Press.

After six months on the squad Bendary, facing questions from his church and colleagues, left to start his own team. In addition to helping Christians achieve success, Je Suis Club has welcomed Muslim players. Having grown from 20 to 140 players, it now competes within the fourth level of the Egyptian League.

Nasa managers called them “computers,” skilled mathematicians who, despite all the pains that came with being labeled “colored,” have aspirations, strength, and skills to prove their worth. Dorothy Vaughan, who assumed the responsibilities of a supervisor, bravely asked for a formal promotion only to be rejected for no reason other than her race. Mary Jackson, an outspoken yet optimist mathematician, saw her dreams of becoming an engineer met with a series of setbacks. Without any legal representation, Mary had to make a personal plea before a judge to allow her to attend night classes at a whites-only school. And Katherine Johnson, a mathematical genius chosen to join the Space Task Group, had to overcome one blunt racial offense after another before anyone in the group could accept her vital role.
All three women faced conflicts and challenges that were nonexistent to the rest of the population. Although the movie's overarching theme was the lack of equal rights between black and white men and women, the individual story of the three heroines - their authenticity, genius, and vigor - proves that fighting for justice is a battle that can sometimes be won.

Released in 2016, Hidden Figures narrates the story of three female African-Americans. Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson were exceptional, pioneering women who overcame racial barriers and became mathematicians at NASA during the era of the Space Race. They were part of a group of African-American women in the West Area Computing unit of NASA, beginning in the 1950s, which played a major role in the early stages of the space program.

Johnson was 101 years of age and the only one living at the time of the award. Originating two decades ago, mahraganat has the meaning “festivals” in Arabic and combines folk traditions with electronic beats. The style became a flashpoint for controversy on February 14th, as a song by singer Hamo Bika, "Bent el-Geran" ("The Neighbor's Daughter”) gained 60 million SoundCloud listens and more than 100 million Youtube views.
The song features a controversial lyric about drinking alcohol and smoking hashish to get over heartbreak, which goes against Islamic moral precepts. It was notably performed by singer Hassan Shakoosh at a Cairo International Stadium concert on Valentine's Day, with the offending lyrics removed.
The virality of the song led to mahraganat singers being banned from performances at cafes and nightclubs, as well as at tourist venues and on Nile cruises. Hamo Bika has filed a lawsuit against the ruling, which has been viewed by many as placing onerous restrictions on taste and stifling a mode of expression open to young artists who want to address societal problems.

Mary Jackson, an outspoken yet optimist mathematician, saw her dreams of becoming an engineer met with a series of setbacks. Without any legal representation, Mary had to make a personal plea before a judge to allow her to attend night classes at a whites-only school. And Katherine Johnson, a mathematical genius chosen to join the Space Task Group, had to overcome one blunt racial offense after another before anyone in the group could accept her vital role.
All three women faced conflicts and challenges that were nonexistent to the rest of the population. Although the movie's overarching theme was the lack of equal rights between black and white men and women, the individual story of the three heroines - their authenticity, genius, and vigor - proves that fighting for justice is a battle that can sometimes be won.

The virality of the song led to mahraganat singers being banned from performances at cafes and nightclubs, as well as at tourist venues and on Nile cruises. Hamo Bika has filed a lawsuit against the ruling, which has been viewed by many as placing onerous restrictions on taste and stifling a mode of expression open to young artists who want to address societal problems.
