thGAP - BAbyss in Moderno!! Transgenic Human Germline Alternatives ProjectMarc Dusseiller Dusjagr
thGAP - Transgenic Human Germline Alternatives Project, presents an evening of input lectures, discussions and a performative workshop on artistic interventions for future scenarios of human genetic and inheritable modifications.
To begin our lecturers, Marc Dusseiller aka "dusjagr" and Rodrigo Martin Iglesias, will give an overview of their transdisciplinary practices, including the history of hackteria, a global network for sharing knowledge to involve artists in hands-on and Do-It-With-Others (DIWO) working with the lifesciences, and reflections on future scenarios from the 8-bit computer games of the 80ies to current real-world endeavous of genetically modifiying the human species.
We will then follow up with discussions and hands-on experiments on working with embryos, ovums, gametes, genetic materials from code to slime, in a creative and playful workshop setup, where all paticipant can collaborate on artistic interventions into the germline of a post-human future.

7. Throughout my life I have always been fascinated by art and design.
My parents realized that I possessed artistic and creative talents since I was just a little girl. In fact, during my pre-school years, I used to spend long
hours drawing, colouring, painting and craft-making. I also won quite a number of local and foreign art competitions.
My passion for art and design grew as I was getting older, and I also developed great interest in photography, so I started visiting art and photography exhibitions. In
the meantime, as I was regularly watching interior and exterior design programmes on television, I got intrigued by the transformations that designers were capable
to do in a limited time.
When I was a student at the Junior Lyceum I chose Art as one of my option subjects and I did very well in it. I learned various artistic skills and I continued to develop
my talent. At that time I was also very impressed by my uncle’s specialized skills in Ceramics and I had several opportunities to observe him and practise in his
workshop/studio. I also attended a course of his, and I loved working with clay so much, that I decided to present a piece of Ceramics artwork for my final Matsec
project. In the years that followed, Ceramics was even my area of specialisation during my BTEC Foundation Diploma course in Art & Design, and my BTEC Higher
National Diploma course in 3D Design at the Malta College of Arts, Science & Technology (MCAST).
My years at MCAST were quite challenging. I have learned that the design processes involve very hard work. To be successful one has to take the work seriously,
carry out in-depth research, strive to be innovative, practise and practise. However, the end result of a design process gives great satisfaction. The designer will
look at the product and say “I AM YOUR CREATOR!” It is a special feeling!
8. MARINE LIFE MURAL
MATSEC PROJECT
2011-2012
The sea is important in my life and it inspired me to choose the topic for my Matsec project - “Marine
Life”.
Apart from carrying out research using books and the internet, I also visited a local fishmonger to observe
the shapes, forms and colours of the fish displayed in his shop. I produced various sketches in pencil
and colour. Then I rendered the shapes and forms suggested by the subject in an abstract way. I was also
inspired by the works of the Maltese artist Pia Magro and the decorative elements in the works of the late
Austrian artist Gustav Klimt.
I decided to create a Bas relief in low-firing clay, and using one of my abstract drawings, I linked my work to that
of Pia Magro. My clay work was bisque fired to 950 degrees and then glazed. After that, my work was fired a
second time to 1060 degrees. I think that the blending of colours, the stain effects and the 3D effect came out
really good in this artwork.
I am proud to say that the Head of the School, where I attended at that time, really liked my project and she decided to
use it for the following year’s school diary.

12. Inspired by the works of the artist Bev Carson, who looks for the
attractive forms and the intense colours of flowers, I studied the
colour, form and texture of a Hibiscus flower. Then I dissected it in half to
discover what lied “Beneath the Surface”. I was impressed by what I saw and I
decided to produce some related artwork. After experimenting with various types
of medium, I created a 3D stone sculpture. The stone sculpture gave me an idea for an
abstract artwork using:
• printing aluminium to either represent the petals of the flower or the surface of the soil,
• twine to represent the roots beneath the surface of the soil,
• copper wire to represent the movement of the Hibiscus flower,
• gablo to represent the ovary of the flower that I dissected,
• beads that could be interpreted as the ovules inside the ovary,
• sunflower seeds to remind us of the beginning of the flower beneath the surface,
• glass bottle to represent the inner surface of the flower.

14. Final Major Project
BTEC FOUNDATION DIPLOMA
This project was not for ornamental purposes. Inspired by the sea waves, I put my ceramics skills
to the test and created six functional ceramic serving bowls. In this artwork I wanted to bring out
the movement of waves and their continuous sequence. Since the bowls were made to serve food in
them, for safety reasons, stoneware clay was the most suitable to use. The bowls were fired at a very
high temperature and I used the pouring technique for the glazing. I decided to make six small wooden
trays to carry the bowls individually, instead of carrying them together on one single tray – an easier and
a more practical way of serving the food.

My ceramic “Street Life” installation consists of three pieces: a circular flat
base; an upside-down bowl resting on it; and a vase placed on top. I used the
marbling technique to produce the base, the throwing technique for the bowl in
the middle, and I created the vase using the throwing and the Raku technique. The
engravings that I did on the bowl represent road markings and footprints which often go
un-noted by passers-by. On the other hand, the engravings on the vase show people and
things that passers-by usually notice straightaway. In fact, I engraved people on the move, a
push-chair, as well as things and buildings that I observed during my photographic research on the
streets.

18. This was a group project. Basically, we had to combine our areas of
expertise, i.e. ceramics, wood, stone, metal and textiles, and create a
dining unit. A group project is always challenging because the individuals in
the group come up with different ideas, yet they must unite and agree on one
style to produce harmony with their designs. We were inspired by organic design
and agreed to use this style for our dining unit. I created a set of three ceramic dinner
plates and a bowl. I used stoneware clay, cut out and shaped most of the pieces by hand,
and I used the throwing technique for the bowl. I applied three coatings of white glaze on top
of each plate/bowl.

I had to come up with an innovative idea for make-up cardboard or plastic
packaging, and I decided to work with cardboard. My chosen design was a
lipstick case incorporated with a wrist watch (2-in-1 product). The design
consisted of three lipstick compartments, a mirror, a digital watch, a strap
made out of a metallic strip and covered by a piece of golden fabric, patterned
paper and obviously cardboard. I also used a magnetic lock-up system.

22. FROM NEEDS TO DREAMS
POZNAN, POLAND
I participated in a project entitled “From Needs to Dreams -
Intercultural Academy of Openness” which was co-financed by the European
Commission, through the “Youth in Action” programme, and the Murowana
Goslina Partnership Committee, Poznan (Poland). The young participants came
from Poland, Malta, Georgia and Armenia, and the various activities focused on the
individuals’ needs and dreams. During one of the creative artistic workshops, we expressed
our past and future needs and dreams – those already fulfilled and others waiting to be fulfilled
- by creating a “Needs and Dreams” board using material of our choice. In all we used twenty-eight
wooden boards and when we were ready, we compared our needs and dreams. We had very interesting
discussions about them and this was an unforgettable experience. Our boards were later permanently
erected in a Primary School yard in Poznan (Poland).

After a photographic survey at the Addolorata Cemetery, my tutor selected one of my
mausoleum photos and I re-modelled it on the computer, using 3Ds Max. It was my first
design using this particular software. My other 3Ds Max designs included modelling a Pastry
shop design called City Delights and also my Performing Stage design inspired by water for the
End of Year Exhibition at our Art & Design Institute.
