RECLAIMED MODERNISM
FINAL PLAN
MOOD BOARD MOOD BOARDFREE HAND SKETCH
The Brief
The client wanted the space to be a bright,
functional and homely space with a comfortable
way to accomodate guests and adequate
storage for her belongings. She also made
a particular point of having a large kitchen
with generous work space and a dining table
that would accomodate up to six guests. She
also wanted to have a seperate bath and
shower if possible. A place to display art work,
photographs and pieces that she has collected
on her travels as well as place to practice yoga.
Throughout the research process I found that
a lot of the locations that my client liked con-
tained reclaimed furniture and materials.
Modernism was also clearly a running theme
throughout her interests. This lead me to
choose the concept, reclaimed modernism. The idea behind
the concept was to reclaim modernism as an interior style. To
add another element to my design I tried to source a number
of reclaimed pieces of furniture from the mid century period.

The Brief
The brief stated that I was to create a vibrant and
engaging entrance to Somerset House. The space
was to include a reception desk that could be
converted into a champagne bar in the evening.
Wewerealsoaskedtoincludeameetingpointfor
tours and visitors that could also act as a sociable
seating area when the space was being used for
both corportateandprivateevents.Wewerealso
asked for our designs to be in keeping with the
already well established Somerset House brand.
The space felt dark and disconnected from
the building’s rich heritage so I wanted to
reconnect the space with the past but still
make it relevant to Somerset House’s modern
and diverse audience. I came up with the
concept subverted classicism. Neoclassical designers sought
to rejuvenate and reconstruct the past to create an eternally
true style and I aimed to achieve this in the space. The idea

The Brief
The brief was given to us by a charitable
organisation called Regenerate. This was a live
project and we were asked to redesign a youth
centre on the Roehampton estate in Putney.
They wanted to make it feel more homely and
inviting as they were keen to attract more kids
from the surrounding area as well as give the
regulars a much nicer experience when spending
time there.

Concept and Design:
The roe in Roehanmpton is a reference to
the rooks that migrate into the area every
year. Rooks have both an intelligent and
micheavious nature and we felt that this
related nicely to the kids that spend time at
the youth centre. For us the birds also symbolised freedom,
protectionandajourney.Welookedmigrationpatternofbirds
and decided to use this pattern throughout the space. The
building is on raised on stilts so we came up with the concept
urban treehouse as a way of honouring it’s architecture.

CONCEPT
The Brief
Inspired by the redevelopment in Chelsea
Harbour, Jamie Oliver was expanding his
Italian restaurant portfolio as a response the
influx of industry and new residents into the
area.
Our designs were to include a resolved plan
for the reception, restaurant and bar areas.
We were asked to pay careful attention to
FFE, efficient space planning as well as the
planning regulations that are associated with
public spaces.
Precident studies and primary research were
key to this project along with an appreciation
for innovative design trends within the
hospitality sector.
Our proposals were to demonstrate an
understanding and thoughtful interpretation
of Jamie Oliver’s personal and professional
philosophies.
Hospitality
Concept and Design:
As we were developing designs for Jamie
Oliver’sItalianrestaurant,Ibeganmyresearch
by looking into Italy. I thought about why it is
so appealing and found that it was because
it evokes this rustic and imperfect charm. I
thought about some of the iconic places there such as the
learning tower of pisa, the collisium and Tuscany and all of
them seem to be half falling apart but this does not seem to
affect the appeal of these places. It enhances their beauty
and creates a level of interest.
