3. Honours Project
The brief was to initiate an Interior Design project
that modifies and adapts the spaces within an existing
site to enable new uses and/or give new meaning.
My chosen building was the Regent cinema in Blackpool,
it had recently been bought and was in use as an antiques
market. My idea was based on creating a community art
and workshop centre focusing on urban art, influenced by
the buildings surrounding area and the graffiti festival
that takes place nearby.
The central structure is inspired by the shape of a
paint blob, which will be created from a geometric
framework where canvases can be hung. The canvases
create a series of layers, building an ongoing piece of
artwork to be constantly added to. This will not only
create a sense of community which the area lacks, but
will educate and inspire people to get involved and be
more creative.

4. Design Development
The initial concept for the design was that there would
be a buildable structure in the centre of the building
that could be added to and layered upon by the public,
acting as a living timeline and collaborative piece
of artwork. I was inspired by the shape and structure
of paint blobs to create the initial shape. I decided
this would be an area that would focus on urban art,
in particular graffiti, as there was a large culture
around this in the buildings area due to an urban arts
festival that takes place nearby every year. The idea
of creating a community space will bring residents
together and encourage people to learn about, and take
part in creative workshops.

5. Design Development
The main structure of the design developed from a
blob like shape to a geometric framework made up of
20mm square steel tubing. I experimented with wire and
soldering tools to visualize this shape and work out
how it would fit together. Triangle panels would be
made to clip onto each section. This will be built up
over time by the public, creating the graffiti covered
structure. A similar design has been replicated in the
cafe area, where the food counter and dining tables have
a similar metal supporting structure, but are topped
with glass. There will be large exposed ventilation
pipes surrounding the structure that can be moved to
where they are needed.

The cafe and dining area will have a food
counter and tables made in a similar way
to the main structure, steel bars will be
welded together, with a tempered glass
surface fixed to the top.

12. Material Specifications
The main structure is constructed from 40mm square steel rods
which are cut and welded together. The canvases are created
from timber rods of the same size which are put together
with screws and will have canvas stretched over them and
stapled. Each canvas will have six 10mm wooden dowels which
will fit into holes drilled into the steel structure, each
canvas can just clip into place upon completion.
The steps that will wrap around the main structure are to
be made from steel and will be supported by a steel frame
which then integrates into the rest of the structure. Each
step will have 10mm tempered glass slotted into a frame
made of durbar steel. The tempered glass panels along
the bannister will be connected with 10mm flat base glass
clamps. 16mm fittings will be used to connect the stair
panel to the bannister holiding the glass.

13. BFI - Sci Fi Cinema
Collaborative project with TheyEatCulture to create
a series of pop up cinema events focusing on Sci Fi
films.
Client’s Brief...
We require a group of Interior Design students to
design the look & feel to help transform the space
to compliment the films and happenings. They will work
closely in collaboration with the Technical Production
team and in liaison with the Architecture students
who will be responsible for the build. Accumulating
in Sketched Designs, presentation and final scale
drawings to be signed off with They Eat Culture and
passed onto to the build team for construction for
the architectural elements (some embellishments to be
constructed by Interior students). Interior team to
work as clients and in partnership with architecture
team.

14. ET
Allocated Budget-£340. Time scale-2 weeks to Design
and build. Target Audience- Families with young
children. Screening Date-Saturday 18th October 2014.
The non traditional venue chosen for E.T
screening is a high school, just outside of the city
centre.
- slat wall filled with stuffed toys to emulate the
scene in the film when ET hides in the closet.
- Design idea emerged to create a wall
with different size bike wheels attached
to the face of the wall and toys and film
stills intertwined through the spokes.
- Another design aspect we needed to consider was the
spaceship

15. Dredd
Allocated Budget-£800. Time scale-2 weeks to Design and
build. Target Audience-The film is rated 18 and there
will be alcohol served at the screening, this event is
aimed at adults. Screening Date-Saturday 22nd October
2014. The venue choice for Dredd was in a empty floor
of an office block in Preston City centre, This was a
really interesting location to have a cinema event due
to its regimented office structure and functional feel.
- We constructed screens out of wood, corrugated plastic
sheeting and cardboard, each screen was inspired by
lighting from the tower block scenes of the film.
- For the bar area we created a light installation
for the main focus area. We began experimenting with
plastic bags to create a structure which was then
backlit.

16. Tron
Allocated Budget-£1200. Time scale-3 weeks to Design
and build. Target Audience-This is a family friend-
ly film, however screened in a nightclub with an after
party, the intended audience will be teens and up-
wards. Screening date-Saturday 29th November 2014. The
chosen venue for the Tron screening was 53 Degrees in
Preston.
- Tron structures , Material chosen is a lightweight
upholstery underlay. This material was chosen as it is
manageable to clad and cheap.
- Neon tape, was part of the design scheme. Used to
create Perspectives. Poly tunnel used for E.T was re-
used as a passage from the pre-screening area to the
screening room.
- Neon cotton string to be used to create a portal re-
ferring to the transportation from real world into the
game in the movie.

17. Other Projects
1. Student Union Stairs
To design a staircase for the universities student union.
My design was based images of a cascading waterfall,
the fluid structure and multiple platforms replicate a
form frequently found in nature.The main material for
these steps would be glass, complementing the idea of
flowing water.
2. Building Re-Use
To design a creative learning environment to be built
in an existing building on campus.I based the main
aspect of my design on the curved shape created by
the Fibonacci sequence. As this is a natural design
repeated throughout nature, I decided to replicate this
idea and have the same shape making up many aspects of
the structure, from the main slope to the arched roofs
and room dividers.
3. Dior Kiosk
To create an advertisement kiosk to promote a brand
of our choice.This was inspired by Dior’s Autumn/
Winter’13 Catwalk Show, replicating the idea of the
giant mirror balls and pairing it with aspects of Rene
Magritte’s surrealist paintings, also referenced in
Dior’s campaign.
4. Cinema Around The Corner
Collaberative project with TheyEatCulture to create a
temporary cinema space for an underprivileged area of
Preston.

and performance based storytelling experience for
the whole family featuring mesmerizing storytelling,
theatre, musical and visual performances as well as a
range of creative story making workshops across six
progamme strands.

The Festival of Stories is a part of Lytham Festival,
a week long programme of culture, comedy and music,
taking place in Lytham this August, which is organised
by award winning event producers and promoters, Cuffe
and Taylor.
