The document is Emily Carter's interior design portfolio, which includes summaries and images from several of her design projects. It includes projects focused on residential, hospitality, retail, and educational design. The largest project summarized is a multi-unit residential building designed to accommodate residents through different stages of life by making the walls and casework movable. Other projects include a park lodge, furniture showroom, luxury brownstone penthouse, and library. The portfolio demonstrates Emily's range of project types and emphasis on conceptual design tailored to each client's needs.

Making lifestyle decisions is something that many people encounter every day. The opportunity to build or refurbish a home provides exciting challenges to emphasise the way individuals wish to live.
At Mackay + Partners, we view a home as a place that supports both our practical and emotional needs. We give great attention to the needs of each individual inhabitant. Mackay + Partners works closely with our clients to understand what will result in, spaces that enliven the everyday.
Our clients requested an entertainment area that was relaxing with the atmosphere of a Cape Cod vacation. We were able to give our clients their desires for a TV area, a bar, a playroom, an exercise room, a full bath and a guest bedroom.

This project focused on aging in place. The problem with
this type of project is units without flexibility are not good
for aging.A unit good for an individual is not good for a
family. How can units be flexible to accommodate
different stages of life? The thesis for the problem was,
by carefully designing fixed and moveable parts units can
adapt as the resident’ needs change through their stages
of life.
The only thing that needed to be fixed within a unit is
the bathroom. Each of the walls the separate the units
are moveable. The walls act as pocket walls that can be
pushed back allowing for a unit to go from a single up to
a triple unit. The casework in the units are two feet by
two feet modules that are on wheels allowing for them to
be easily moved.
The materiality of the space parallels aging, therefore,
leather, copper and western red cedar were used, which
all show wear with time and have distinct smells that will
remind the residents of home.
An atrium was added where people can lounge and enjoy
an outdoor experience in the interior especially in the
harsh Boston winters. Each floor includes an elderly and
kids community space along with balconies off of each
unit for the middle aged residents.
All in all, this is a one of a kind project that allowed for
someone in their twenties to stay till they no longer can
live independently since their home fluctuated with their
stages of life.

This project was done as part of Wentworth’s EPIC learn-
ing. For this project one interior designer partnered up
with three architects to create a lodge on national park
land in Quincy, MA.This is a proposed project, therefore, it
was the job of the designers to come up with a hub that
will allow people from around the world to come to this
one location and via boat be able to travel to the national
parks along the east coast.
The team decided to make the hoteling and boat ter-
minal be all one massive building, but the public areas
are located within the ribbon that intertwines with the
private hotel rooms. The bottom of the ribbon holds the
boat terminal along with the hotel reception, which then
moves up levels ending with a restaurant on the fifth level
of the building.
The ribbon was the determining factor in how the lodge
was designed. Yellow translucent glass was added along
one side of the ribbon to emphasize the ribbon itself. The
yellow glass determined the materiality used on the rest
of the project.
Overall, this is a unique project not only for its design, but
also the process behind it as it was the only one that was
done with the architects students.

The project consisted of creating an office space for a
company that sells corporate furniture along with a show-
room for the public. Part of the office is a working show-
room, but a majority of it is shut off from the public.
Light trails inspired the design of the space. The move-
ment is documented in a literal since horizontally with the
light that runs along the main circulation path and above
the open office workstations with linear lights staggered
along the act ceiling. Movement is also documented verti-
cally on the reception wall.
Since light trails combine both warm and cool lights that
was tied into the color scheme of the space. The open
office consisted of cool tones, the enclosed offices con-
sisted of warm tones, and the public spaces consisted of
both warm and cool tones.
The enclosed offices are pushed into the center of the
space creating circulation around them with the worksta-
tions being placed along the window line, but occasionally
broken up by a breakout space. This also allows for ample
natural light to flood the space.
All in all, this is a collaborative work environment that is
trendy, but the pops of color are added in areas that can
be easily changed to keep up the most up to date colors.

The project consisted of creating a luxurious unit for a
single entrepreneur. Since he wanted an open floor plan
ideal for parties the concept of reveal came about, but
soon changed to weightlessness. The focal of the space
would be the glass wall on the penthouse level that over
looks the double height living room. The penthouse floor
feels as if it is floating above the first floor. This feature
dictated the floor plan.
The concept is carried throughout the project includ-
ing the furniture and casework pieces, which do not fully
touch the ground to reinforce the idea of having a weight-
less space. The stair, also goes along with the concept as
it is cantilevered off the wall. The risers were eliminated
to help further the concept. And the handrail is off of the
stair a little to give the affect it is floating there.
Overall, this mainly black and white space has a very high
tech modern feel.

The problem given was to design the Wentworth
Institute ofTechnology’s Library. Different types of study-
ing spaces were to be created and noise levels needed
to be considered.Yale University’s library first inspired
the design, which grew into creating a cutting edge mod-
ern feel by using the already existing column grid and
the materials such as wood, metal, and glass. The limited
materials palette primarily embraces one of Wentworth’s
colors; black and creates a sense of unity within the space.
Bookcases help define spaces without using actual walls.
The floor to ceiling stacks are the dominant feature in
the library and for that reason the gallery is a focal area
since the stacks surround the space. The gallery is also a
focal since it is located in the monumental location of the
library. The bookshelves accentuate the scale that much
more since they emphasize the scale of the ceiling. For
this reason reason the study tables in that area are larger
than the other study areas to fit proportionally into the
space.
Ultimately, this is a space where students can gather and
study together or individually, as well as for other visitors
to come in and enjoy the gallery displaying student work.

The project consisted of creating a wellness spa based
on a ritual. The floor plan is arranged to force the visitor
to experience the entire ritual, which is as follows: arrival,
disrobing, heat, cooling and soaking, relaxation, and
departure. This project is a high end and sophisticated
environment.Through using reflective and sparkle type
quality materials the spa takes on an elegant feel. The
tranquility comes from the fire and water features used
throughout the spa. They are what define the ritual spaces
as one or the other were used at each ritual space.

The problem at hand was to create a small
restaurant in Paris located specifically atViaduct Des Arts.
It needed to accommodate 50 guests along with a bar
area that sat 8 to 12 guests. The stained glass that was in
numerous buildings in Paris including Notre Dame instant-
ly inspired the design. As the ideas matured the concept
of the space took a bit of a turn from focusing on Notre
Dame to a heavenly or dreamlike space. The feeling was
created through the use of white leather seating, mir-
rored tables, glass, walnut flooring, and the existing neutral
colored stone walls.
The space is very light and reflective. The stained glass dic-
tated the arrangement of the space since the maximum
amount of people needed to experience the piece of art.
In the end, following the rectilinear aspects of the exist-
ing building and a grid like spatial organization a pleasant
environment that comfortably fits more than 50 guests
was created.

The problem was to create a retail store that would hold
small household appliances along with a demo space. By
following a grid like spatial organization a space is created
where customers would circulate by looping around the
columns. There is a contrast between the very sleek and
cold appliances to the warm materials used. The materi-
als include: acid stained concrete, dark walnut, and warm
paint colors. The rigidness of the space also contrasted
with the organic appearances of the appliances as well.
The demo acts as an element of surprise since it is in
the back of the space and is the only curvilinear aspect
of the design. This overall modern space is practical and
functional.
