EXPLORING AUDIO-TACTILE DESIGN APPROACHES IN CREATING A HOME-AWAY-FROM-HOME F...DamilareOG
This document is a thesis submitted by Ogunsanya Damilare Damisi to the Department of Architecture at the University of Lagos in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master's degree in Environmental Design. The thesis explores audio-tactile design approaches for creating accessible housing for visually impaired students at the University of Lagos. Through literature review and case studies of similar projects, the thesis examines challenges faced by visually impaired individuals and strategies for multi-sensory design. This informed the design of a proposed hostel for visually impaired students at the University of Lagos, with a focus on audio-tactile cues to aid wayfinding and accessibility.
The document proposes a vertical architecture collage campus that consolidates architecture education facilities into a single high-density, high-rise building. The project aims to innovatively introduce architecture departments in an iconic building that encourages social interaction and cultural activities. It seeks to bridge the gap between public access to architecture and optimize land use by creating a "city within a city". The methodology will include case studies of skyscrapers and a site in Mumbai to design the campus with required academic spaces, recreational areas, and structural and service systems in compliance with regulations.
The document provides guidelines for designing an exhibition pavilion including areas for data collection, storage, outdoor space, lighting, exhibition design, auditorium, administration, conference hall, food court, parking, restrooms, and fire safety precautions. Dimensions and specifications are given for corridors, seating, sight lines, and other structural elements to facilitate efficient circulation and use of the various spaces.
The document discusses the concept of tissue analysis, which involves overlaying known urban plans and patterns onto vacant sites to rapidly generate design options. There are three main types of urban tissue: static tissue characterized by consistent small lot patterns; elastic tissue with disordered lot sizes and lack of street networks; and campus tissue consisting of large tracts owned by a single entity with multiple buildings. The document then provides case studies analyzing the tissue composition of three shopping malls in the Atlanta area - Ansley Mall, Perimeter Pointe Shopping Center, and Union Station Mall - to determine their potential for retrofitting.
Inference from case studies for designing ISBTMridul Bhandari
The document compares two interstate bus terminals (ISBT) in India based on their design features and facilities. Both have a hot and dry climate. The ISBT in Vadodara has a smaller campus and built-up area compared to the ISBT in Kashmiri Gate, New Delhi. Some positive aspects of the ISBTs are facilities for disabled access, fire safety measures, and a connected shopping mall. However, some negative aspects are lack of accessibility for disabled people to certain areas, poor ventilation in administrative areas, and absence of clear signage leading to confusion over entries.

Sense and Sensitivity in Architecture – The Use of Five Senses in Space makingPremier Publishers
This study intends to look at the importance of the five senses in experiencing a space. The five senses include vision, touch, olfaction, taste and auditory. Architects need to look into how a space interacts with its end user. Architecture is the journey and not just the destination. It’s a whole package of experiencing a space and it’s not just about the architect. In the process of thinking and perception of architecture there is always more importance given to visual senses than the other senses and the problems of contemporary architecture is rooted in visual dominance and may be the result of unbalanced senses system. All our information about our surrounding world is achieved by our senses and this information help us in perception and recognition. A building should bring into perspective all the five senses, thereby giving a three-dimensional angle to the structure. This study also looks at the role of perception of a space for a person who is sensory impaired such as a person with blindness, deafness, dumbness etc. Therefore, we use Phenomenology of Architecture to experience a space through sensory properties.

This document discusses architectural acoustics and provides information on sound classification, characteristics of musical sound, intensity, absorption coefficient, sound absorbing materials, reverberation, and factors affecting building acoustics such as reverberation time, loudness, focusing, echo, echelon effect, and resonance. It also covers noise control and discusses remedies for improving acoustics issues in buildings.
The document discusses the design considerations for barrier-free school facilities that serve disabled students. It outlines four major principles: the range of movement for physically disabled people, their strength, dimensions of prosthetic devices like wheelchairs, and use of durable materials. It then provides details on classroom design including larger size, switch placement, window rails, and blackboard height. Case studies of three international schools are described that incorporate universal design features like sensory trails, redundant signage, and interaction between private and public spaces.
Landscape design in housing projects considers social, environmental, aesthetic, and economic factors. The Laburnum housing project in Gurgaon, India incorporated courtyards linked by pedestrian paths with water features. It achieved 100% basement parking with sustainable drainage.
The "Living Landscape" student design project received an award for orienting semi-detached homes to face the street with gardens in front. This enhanced neighborhood liveliness compared to conventional back-to-back homes. Grass roofs provided sculptural views of the extended landscape from neighboring living rooms.

The term “Vernacular architecture” in general refers to the informal building of structures through traditional building methods without using the services of a professional architect. It is the most widespread form of building .
Vernacular architecture has been growing over time with continuities changes, transformations and adaptations to the different social and economic conditions of each period.
This document provides information about the Indian architect Achyut Prakash Kanvinde and his works, including projects at IIT Campus in Kanpur and Darshana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad. It discusses Kanvinde's influences from the Bauhaus style under Walter Gropius and his principles of treating buildings with "Vastushastra" and using a grid of columns to give structures spatial aspects. Specific features of the IIT Kanpur campus are highlighted, including its academic buildings, hostels, and landscaping designed to encourage interaction. Details are also given about the P.K. Site Planning in the Context of Architectural Projects JIT KUMAR GUPTA
Site planning and building design should follow key principles:
1. Thorough site analysis considering location, orientation, topography, vegetation and infrastructure is essential for optimal design.
2. Buildings should be oriented and planned considering sun path, wind direction and climate for energy efficiency.
3. Setbacks, landscaping, and minimizing site disturbance and building footprints are important for sustainability and livability.
This document provides an introduction and background on a group project to conduct an acoustic analysis of the PJ Live Arts Centre auditorium in Malaysia. The objectives are to study the auditorium design and how acoustic elements affect quality. The methodology discusses using a sound level meter, camera, and tape measure to collect data on site. An analysis is then presented on the theatre design, including the shape, seating layout, and ceiling reflector panels. Sources of indoor and outdoor noise are also identified, such as from doors, air conditioning, and the waiting area. The document aims to demonstrate understanding of the auditorium's acoustics through analysis and reporting.
This lecture discusses the temporal dimension of urban design. Urban design is four-dimensional, with time being the fourth dimension. We experience time in cities through rhythmic repetition of daily and seasonal cycles, as well as through progressive change over long periods. Urban spaces are used differently at various times of day and seasons. Understanding temporal patterns of activity can help designers facilitate more effective use of public spaces.
