We would like to update the board on the PUH @ WGS which is a new LLA programme that we have initiated earlier this year to support the training, education and active involvement of youths in the areas of community immersion and leadership.
Apart from enhancing the spaces, the main objectives of the project are to focus on the rich multi-culture and racial heritage of the Malay identity which we hope to educate the wider community and it engages the youths especially. We have engaged the students from Singapore University of Technology and Design , and through this project, they have been exposed to community immersion, service learning experiences and it also develop their leadership skills when they lead this project. We have also approached and involve community stakeholders in the development of the spaces.
As mentioned, we have engaged It is part of their final year capstone project, and they are
Through the PD workshop, the participants applied the creative engagement tools for greater community participation and the overall feedback gathered was that that there are changes in the lifestyle choices which has diluted the malay culture, especially amongst the younger generation. Through this insight, we gathered that the Community hopes to bring back memories of the old kampong days, which they feel will value add to GS’s rich Malay Culture.
The students then applied their knowledge and skills acquired from the workshop and designed a pop-up stories market booth which was exhibited at thTopping Out Celebration @ WGS on 8 April. The booth was made up of 3 activity stations which were the memory mapping, heat mapping and e art making.
To gather more in-depth insights and validate their 5 design proposals, the students conducted a Focus Group Discussion with the guidance from ThinkPlace to share and demonstrate the proposals to 10 participants by engaging them interactively through hands-on activities. Participants then feedback on the ideas that they think the community would be interested in and provided suggestions to further improve them.
Based on the insights, we have identified the users – who are the (young and old) market goers, residents and visitors (non-residents) who visit GS for its food and found out that the users felt that there was a lack of seating spaces and interactive play area to entertain the children while the adults shop at the Geylang Serai and Haig road market.
The user needs were also identified after assessing the opinions and to meet these needs, it was concluded that the end product would be to create an interactive communal resting space that represents a vibrant cultural icon. Through this revitalized space, we also hope that it would encourage intergenerational conversations as such contact is lacking in our society.
To enhance the experience, the SUTD team introduced other Malay traditional games such as Wau kite-flying and Gasing
And incorporated these 3 elements (the wau factor, top gasing seats and Chap-Play) and further developed it into an interactive and educational playscape which reinforces the need to create a dynamic communal space that brings out the unique Malay cultural elements. This common experience can facilitate familiarity amongst strangers and potentially create shared experiences.
For element 1, the WAU factor is emphasized with the kite canopy draping over the site which could also be a sheltered space.
That will lead to Element 2 which is the Top gasing seats taking different forms and colours to enhance the vibrancy and it creates a conducive seating and interactive space
And lastly, the Chap-Play, which is the main highlight of the Playscape is designed to bring out the iconic element and interactive nature. It is interactive in a way that it recreates the sights and sounds of the actual chapteh when people bounce on it. The students have chosen to create a 1-1 prototype of the Chap-Play because of its adaptability to multiple user groups and showcases the vibrancy of the Malay culture, and it is a potential instagrammable public space, which creates an identity for GS.
The students have identified 5 sites after multiple recees and eventually proposed to have it implemented at WGS.
This is the layout.
