The document discusses populating and browsing 3D collections. It defines key terms like 3D collections and describes workflows for building a collection through digitization, processing, ingestion, and enriching items with metadata. The document outlines how users like administrators, professionals, and the public can access a collection through search and browsing interfaces that leverage metadata. It also discusses opportunities for 3D collections through cloud computing, 3D on the web, and mobile access.
A Data Integration Case Study - Avoid Creating a “Franken-Beast”DATAVERSITY
Why should people store many kinds of data in one place? Why not put the many kinds in many places? Everyone who works with data and databases today acknowledges that we are all dealing with many different forms of data, requiring new tools and management approaches. This trend has been termed “Polyglot Persistence” by Martin Fowler, in his now-famous 2011 blog post. Enterprise data and even single-system data today often span all of the following: structured data sources, binaries, text data, and semantic RDF triples.
Yet the implementation of systems that manage poly-structured data is still dangerously complex and risky. In this webinar, Dr. Damon Feldman from MarkLogic will recount a true story of complex data integration gone wrong. Dr. Feldman will review the approaches and pitfalls associated with this issue, one he’s dubbed “Avoiding the Franken-Beast.” You’ll hear about a real-world project that grew too complex, and you’ll learn how to avoid this same situation of creating your own data “Franken-Beast.”

stackconf 2023 | Dynamic Image Optimization with imgproxy at Schwarz IT by An...NETWAYS
Images account for 42% of the LCP Element of all websites. But in 2023, still, we are seeing too large images delivered on websites – even on the Stackconf speakers page, I currently see 15 MB size and one 5 MB Image. Even if the techniques to resize and optimize images are available for quite some time – they’re still not used everywhere. In this talk I’ll give you an overview of the capabilities of the open source image optimizer imgproxy. At Schwarz we’re using it a dynamic image optimization engine for our Digital Leaflets delivered in all Lidl & Kaufland countries. Imgproxy is not only resizing images, but also delivering modern image formats like WEBP and AVIF. Ironically, the app itself is scaling up and down as well in STACKIT Appcloud.
The Metadata Provenance Task Group aims to define a data model that allows for making
assertions about description sets. Creating a shared model of the data elements required to
describe an aggregation of metadata statements allows to collectively import, access, use and
publish facts about the quality, rights, timeliness, data source type, trust situation, etc. of the
described statements. In this paper we describe the preliminary model created by the task group,
together with first examples that demonstrate how the model is to be used.

3-Way Scripts are simple code units which can automatically respond to (1) class instantiation and function calls, (2) calls on command line, (3) web API calls. The key merit is that all the three methods are handled by the same code without any additional overhead. In additional to the core idea of 3-way scripting, this paper also adds a security feature for the web API function in form of generation and handling of keys across multiple instances of code running at multiple locations. The main objective for the security features is the same as core idea -- to minimize the coding overhead and maximize simplicity and flexibility. The proposed design is showcased as a practical solution for cloud applications which consist of a large number of independent and loosely coupled instances of the same code. In current practice, this showcase is close in nature to popular scale-out platforms like Docker and Heroku.

Providing discovery systems for eresourcesis essential for library services today.
Commercial search engine indices have been a widely used solution in recent years. In
contrast, running an own discovery service is undoubtedly a challenging task but promises
full control over data processing, enrichment, performance and quality. Building an own
aggregated index of eresourcesincludes gathering the right mix of data sources, clearing
licensing issues, and negotiating data availability. Technically, these threads are resumed by
data harvesters, filters and workflow orchestration tools.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
