ABSTRACT
Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to cut materials and is typically used for
industrial manufacturing applications, but it also starting to be used by schools and
businesses, and hobbyists. Laser cutting works by dire4cting the output of a high-power
laser most commonly through optics. The laser optics and computer numerical control are
used to direct the material or the laser beam generated. A typical commercial laser for
cutting materials would involve a motion control system to follow their code of the pattern
to be cut onto the material. The focused laser beam is directed at the material, which then
either melts, burn, vaporizes away, or is blown away by a jet of gas, leaving an edge with a
high quality surface finish industrial laser cutters are used to cut flat-sheet materials as well
as structural and piping materials
Laser-cutting delivers results that are, in many cases, faster and more accurate than
traditional method.
Imagine taking a really small blow-torch and attaching it to a mechanical and controlled by a
computer that, in its most basic form, is laser-cutting what we’re talking about is essentially
, a controlled way to burn through various materials. We’re deliberately using the term
‘burn’ because heat, flame, smoke and fumes are constant side effect of the laser-cutting
process which, if not handled, will cause problems for the job being cut, the person
operating the system and the cutting equipment itself.

1.INTRODUCTION
In1965, the first production laser cutting machine was used to drill holes in diamond dies.
This machine was made by the Western Electric Engineering Research Center. In 1967, the
british pioneered laser-assisted oxygen jet cutting for metals. In the early 1970s, this
technology was into production to cut titanium for aerospace applications. At the same time
CO2 lasers were not powerful enough to overcome the thermal conductivity of metal.
Laser are used for many purposes. One way they are used is for cutting metal plates. On
mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum plate, the laser cutting process is highly accurate,
yields excellent cut quality, has a very small kerf width and small heat affect zone, and
makes it possible to cut very intricate shapes and small holes.

Most people already know that the word “LASER” is actually acronym for light amplification
by stimulated emission of radiation. But how does light cut through a steel plate?
The laser beam is a column of very high intensity light, of a single wavelength, or color. In
the case of a typical co2 laser, that wavelength is in the infra-red part of the light spectrum,
so it is invisible to the human eye. The beam is only about ¾ of an inch in diameter as it
travels from the laser resonator, which creates the beam through the machine’s beam path.
It may be bounced it different directions by a number of mirrors, or “beam benders”, before
it is finally focused onto the plate. The focused laser beam goes through the bore of a nozzle
right before it hits the plate. Also flowing through the nozzle bore is a compressed gas, such
as Oxygen or Nitrogen
Focusing the laser beam can be done by a special lens, or by a curved mirror, and this takes
place in the laser cutting head. The beam has to be precisely focused so that the shape of
the focus spot and the density of the energy in that spot are perfectly round and consistent,
and centered in the nozzle. By focusing the large beam down to a single pinpoint, the heat
density at the spot is extreme. Think about using a magnifying glass to focus the sun’s ray
onto a leaf, and how that can start a fire. Now think about focusing 6K Watts of energy into
a single spot, and you can imagine how hot that spot will get.
The high power density results in rapid heating, melting and partial or complete vaporizing
of the material. When cutting mild steel, the heat of the laser beam is enough to start a
typical “oxy-fuel” burning process, and the laser cutting gas will be pure oxygen, just like an

oxy-fuel torch. When cutting stainless steel or aluminum, the laser beam simply melts the
material, and high pressure nitrogen is used to blow the molten metal out of the kerf.
On a CNC laser cuter, the laser cutting head is moved over the metal plate in the shape of
the desired part, thus cutting the part out of the plate. A capacitive height control system
maintains a very accurate distance between the end of the nozzle and the plate that is being
cut. The distance is important, because it determines where the focal point is relative to the
surface of the plate. Cut quality can be affected by raising or lowering the focal point from
just above the surface of the plate, at the surface, or just below the surface.
There are many, many other parameters that affect cut quality as well, but when all are
controlled properly, laser cutting is a stable, reliable, and very accurate cutting process.

2.HISTORY
In 1965, the first production laser cutting machine was used to drill holes in diamond dies.

CO2 lasers were adapted to cut non-metals, such as textiles, because, at the time,
CO2 lasers were not powerful enough to overcome the thermal conductivity of metal
By May of 1967 (just two years later), a German scientist named Peter Houldcroft had begun
developing his own laser-cutting nozzle. This nozzle used a CO2 laser beam and oxygen
assist-gas to experiment with industrial cutting. Thanks to these experiments, Houldcroft
became the first person to use laser cutting to cut through a 1mm steel sheet. Western
Electric quickly jumped on these advancements, making improvements to Houldcroft’s
technology — soon enough; lasers were being sold to companies for industrial applications.
In 1969, the Boeing Company released a paper discussing the possibilities of using laser
cutting on harder materials — such as ceramic and titanium. The paper suggested that, with
significant development, laser cutting could become an effective tool for industrial cutting.
This groundbreaking paper prompted many companies to begin evaluating the possibilities
of laser cutting.

4. PROCESS
Industrial laser cutting of steel with cutting instructions programmed through the CNC
interface
The process works by having a focused and precise laser beam run through the material that
you are looking to cut, delivering an accurate and smooth finish. Initially, the beam pierces
the material with a hole at the edge, and then the beam is continued along from there.
The laser essentially melts the material away that it is run over, so is more like melting than
cutting. This means that it can easily cut light materials such as cloth up to tougher metals
and gemstones such as diamonds.

You can use either a pulsed beam or a continuous wave beam, with the former being
delivered in short bursts while the latter works continuously. You can control the beam
intensity, length and heat output depending on the material you are working with, and can
also user a mirror or special lens to further focus the laser beam.
Laser cutting is a highly accurate process, thanks to this high level of control that you are
offered. Thanks to this, slits with a width as small as 0.1mm can be achieved when using the
process.

4.1 There are three main types of laser cutting
C02 LASER CUTTING
C02 cutting is achieved using a gas laser. The gas in question is a carbon dioxide mixture
which has been electrically stimulated. C02 cutting is most often used on non-metal
materials as they have a wavelength of 10.6 micrometers.
CRYSTAL LASER CUTTING
This method uses nd: YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet)
and nd:YVO (neodymium-doped yttrium ortho-vanadate lasers. These are crystals which
belong in the solid state group of lasers, and have the same wavelength as fiber lasers,
around 1.064 micrometers. This means that they are useful for both metals and non-metals.
However, this type of laser machine is made up from expensive pump diodes, which can be
costly when needed to be replaced; typically, after 8,000 – 15,000 hours of use. The crystal
used also has a much shorter service life than that of a fiber laser.
FIBER LASER CUTTING
This type of cutting is completed using a fiber laser, the type we manufacture here at SPI
Lasers. Like the crystal method above, fiber lasers belong to the solid state group too.
A beam is created using a ‘seed laser’, which is then amplified using glass fibers and pump
diodes. They have the same wavelength as above, 1.064 micrometers. This means that the

beam for a fiber laser is roughly 100 times greater than that of a C02 equivalent when it
comes to intensity. It also means that they can work with both metal and non-metal
material
There are also several techniques involved with the laser cutting process, which we have
touched on briefly above:
 LASER CUTTING
The main use for a laser machine, explained extensively in this article. This is the process of
cutting a shape to create smaller sizes, pieces, or more complex shapes.
 LASER ENGRAVING
Engraving is the process of removing a layer of a material to leave an engraving below. This
is often used for etching barcodes onto items or personalizing items such as trophies.
 LASER MARKING
Marking is similar to engraving in that a mark is made but the difference being that the
mark is only surface level, while an engraving from laser engraving has much more depth.
 LASER DRILLING
Drilling is the process of creating dents or thru-holes on or in the surface of a material.

4.2 WHAT MATERIALS CAN BEMACHINECUT?
A laser machine is great at cutting a huge variety of materials. Listed below are just some of
the many materials:

Whatever the material is that you need to work with and whatever the application, it’s
highly likely that laser cutting will more than be up for the task.
The requirements for cutting are as follows:
a) High power density and therefore small focused spot size
b) Long depth of focus to process thicker materials with a reasonable tolerance to focus
position variation.

4.3 Lasers used for sheet metal cutting
Nowadays most of industrial sheet metal laser cutting is carried out using two types of
lasers: CO2 and fiber
CO2 laser
The CO2 laser (carbon dioxide laser) is generated in a gas mixture, which mostly consists of
carbon dioxide (CO2), heliumand nitrogen. Such a laser is electrically pumped using an
electric discharge. CO2 lasers typically emit at a wavelength of 10.6μm. Those used for
material processing can generate beams of many kilowatts in power. The wall-plug
efficiency of CO2 lasers is about 10%, which is higher than for most lamp-pumped solid-state
lasers (eg ND:YAG lasers), but lower than for many diode-pumped lasers .A CO2 laser can cut
thicker materials (>5mm) faster than a fiber laser of the same power. It also produces a
smoother surface finish when cutting thicker materials.

Fiber lasers
A fiber laser beam is generated by a series of laser diodes. The laser beam is then
transmitted through an optical fiber where it gets amplified (similar to a conventional laser
cavity in CO2 lasers). The amplified beam, on exiting the optical fiber, is collimated and then
focused by a lens or a concave onto the material to be cut. Fiber laser sources have the
following advantages:
Unlike a conventional CO2 resonator, a fiber laser source does not have any moving parts
(e.g. fans for gas circulation) or mirrors in the light-generating source. This is a major
advantage in terms of reducing maintenance requirements and operating costs.
Fiber lasers are typically two to three times more energy-efficient that CO2 lasers of the
same power.
A fiber laser can cut thin sheets faster than a CO2 laser of the same power. This is due to
better absorption of fiber laser wavelength at the cutting front.
Direct diode lasers
Direct diode laser technology is the latest progress in the field of solid-state lasers. In this
technology, several laser beams emitted from laser-emitting diodes of different
wavelengths are superimposed using so-called beamcombining techniques. Unlike fiber
lasers, direct diode lasers do not include a brightness-enhancing stage, giving those lower
optical losses and higher wall-plug efficiency

4.4 METHODS
There are many different methods in cutting using lasers, with different types used to cut
different material. Some of the methods are vaporization, melt and blow, melt blow and
burn, thermal stress cracking, scribing, cold cutting and burning stabilized laser cutting.
Vaporization cutting
In vaporization cutting the focused beam heats the surface of the material to boiling point
and generates a keyhole. The keyhole leads to a sudden increase in absorb quickly
deepening the hole. As the hole deepens and the material boils, vapor generated erodes the
molten walls blowing out and further enlarging the hole. Non melting material such as
wood, carbon and thermo set plastics are usually cut by this method.
Melt and blow
Melt and blow or fusion cutting uses high-pressure gas to blow molten material from the
cutting area, greatly decreasing the power requirement. First the material is heated to
melting point then a gas jet blows the molten material out of the kerf avoiding the need to
raise the temperature of the material any further. Materials cut with this process are usually
metals.

Thermal stress cracking
Brittle materials are particularly sensitive to thermal fracture, a feature exploited in thermal
stress cracking. A beam is focused on the surface causing localized heating and thermal
expansion. This results in a crack that can then be guided by moving the beam. The crack
can be moved in order of m/s. It is usually used in cutting of glass.
Stealth dicing of silicon wafer
The separation of microelectronic chips as prepared in semi-conductor device
fabrication from silicon wafers may be performed by the so-called stealth dicing process,
which operates with a pulsed Nd:YAG laser, The wavelength of which (1064 nm) is well
adopted to the electronic band gap of silicon (1.11 eV or 1117 nm).
Reactive cutting
Also called "burning stabilized laser gas cutting”, "flame cutting". Reactive cutting is like
oxygen torch cutting but with a laser beam as the ignition source. Mostly used for cutting
carbon steel in thicknesses over 1 mm. This process can be used to cut very thick steel
plates with relatively little laser power.

The Ten-HIGH 3020 is the upgraded variation of the previous covered Ten-High
engraver. It gives you far more workspace, so if you need to work on a larger scale you can.

6.5 Commissioning of the machine
A complete working systemis composed by laser engraving machine, the exhaust fan, air
pump, water pump, water tank, exhaust pipe, data transmission lines and soon. According
to the needs the users can configure the computer, printers, scanners and soon by
themselves
INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTING STEPS
1. LASER TUBE INSTALLTION
As the laser glass is fragile goods, the lasertube should be packed separately in order to
ensure its safety during the transportation. So the users must install the laser tube before
machine installation and commissioning. Laser tube should be mounted on the back of the
machine, open the protective cover of the lasertube; you can see the two Vee-blocks
Put the light-emitting window (low-voltage end) of laser tube with the same side of no1
reflector mirror on the vee-blocks carefully, and then latch on the rubber strip on the vee-
blocks wear of laser tube, fix laser tube well.
After fixing the laser tube, the water in let pipe which connect with water sensor should be
connected with the high voltage side water in let mouth of the laser tube; the water outlet

pipe should connect with the low voltage water outlet mouth of laser tube (if the weather is
cold, in case of break the laser tube, we better scald the end of the water pipe with boiled
water to make it soft)

4. Installation of exhaust fan
Make air out let of the pump connected to the air inlet of the engraving machine with
air pipe; ensure the outlet can vent air normally after turn on the power. Air pump is very
important in the system. High-pressure air runs through the air pump and blew out from the
laser light emitting window of the laser head. On the one hand, it can 3ensure the
cleanliness of the focus lens, on the other hand, it can prevent the material in flame by the
Laser light. Therefore in the routine maintainece, the user should pay attention to the air
pipe, must ensure that it cannot be twisty or damaged, otherwise abnormal air may lead to
bumping materials.

5. Safety grounding
 Turn off your K40’s power off and disconnect the power lead
 Check that the grounding wire is making proper contact with the K40’s metal
case. Do this by identifying the grounding (earth) point circled in red in the
photos below. There are reports that some K40’s used PLASTIC washers
between the green/yellow grounding wire and the case, which is completely
unsatisfactory. The wire, washer, bolt and case must all be in electrical
contact. Check the ground connection looks right and tighten up any
looseness in the nut/bolt/connection.
 With your K40 still unplugged from the wall, set your multimeter to measure
Resistance, and place probes on the earth pin of your K40’s power lead
(green/yellow wire), and any exposed (unpainted) metal on the case of your
K40 (other than the bolt shown in the above photo). Your multimeter should
indicate very low resistance (eg. under 10 ohms).
 With your K40 still unplugged from the wall, check that your K40’s power
supply is properly attached to your K40’s case. It should be firmly screwed in
position, not just sitting on top of the case. It needs to be properly grounded.

File “means the number of the memory file presently selected by the operator. If it is 00, it
means the memory file is not selected. FileNumber means the processing times of the
current filenumber. “Max. Energy” and “Speed” separately mean the maximum energy
and the engraving speed set on the keyboard.

7.2 Daily Maintenance and Common Faults
The stable working of the machine is inseparable with normal daily operation
andmaintenance. Here are some common daily maintenance and common faults analysis:
Daily maintenance
1. Replacement of the cooling water (clean water tank and replace recycled water once a
week are recommended):
Quality and temperature of the cooling water can affect the lifetime of laser tube directly,
suggest use purified water or distilled water, and water temperature should be below than
35℃.When higher than 35℃,please replace cooling water, or add ice cubes to lower the
water temperature,(cooling device is recommended, or use two water tanks).
Note: To ensure that the laser tube full filled with cooling water before machine working.
2. Cleaning of Water Tank
First of all, turn off power, disconnect the water inlet pipe, let the inside water of the laser
tube flow into the water tank automatically, open water tank, take out theater pump, clean
water pump and water tank, put the pump back to water tank, insert the water pipe which
connect water pump to water inlet mouth of the machine finish all joints, then replace

cooling water. Turn on the water pump power supply isolate let the pump run 2-3 minutes
(make laser tube full filled with water).
3. Cleaning of Exhaust Fan
After long time using, inside of fan will accumulate much solid dust, so the exhaust fan will
make a great noise, and it is not conducive to the exhaust .When the exhaust effect become
poor, we have to clean the fan and smoke pipe .Firstly, turn off the power supply, remove
the two pipes from the fan, clean dust inside of the pipes, and then clean the dust inside of
the fan.
4. Cleaning of Lens (daily cleaning is recommended before work, equipment must be in
shutdown state)
As we have talked before, engraving machine has three reflector mirrors and one focus lens
(1# reflector mirror is near the light outlet mouth of laser tube, the upper left corner of the
machine, 2# reflector mirror is at left side of the beam, 3# reflector mirror is on the top of
laser head, the focus lens is located in the bottom part of the laser head), the laser is send
out by the mirror reflecting and focus lens focalizing. Mirror is easy to be dirty, resulting in
laser loss and mirror damage
, you needn’t remove 1#,2# and 3# mirror when cleaning them, Just using a cotton bar to
dip some cleaning solution (acetone or alcohol) , swab carefully by rotating from central to
edge of the lens.

5. Cleaning of Guide way (suggest cleaning every two weeks, equipment must been
shutdown state)
First of all, move the laser head to the far right (or left),wipe with a dry cloth until shiny
clean, together with a little oil (sewing machine oil is recommended),push the laser head
several times slowly along the guide, so that lubricant can be evenly distributed. Clean and
lubricate the Y axis two guide ways is the same as X axis.
Note: Please prepare for cleaning Guide - dry cotton cloth, lubricating oil.
6. Optical path inspection
Optical path system of the laser engraving machine is completed by the
mirror reflection and focus lens focusing, and there is optical path bias with the
focus lens, but the three mirrors is fixed by the mechanical part, optical path bias is
very possible for them, although there is no optical bias normally, we still suggest you check
optical path before working. Please get detailed explanation from Chapter 4 "Alignment
Standards of Optical Path

9.SAFETY RULES (to be followed while handling machine)
 The users should read the related operating manual carefully before operating. Must
obey the operating regulation strictly. Non trained people are forbidden to operate
machine.
 The machine uses strong laser radiate, this kind laser radiation might make following
accidents;
 Easy to burn around combustible materials;
 Different working materials might produce other radiations and toxic
or harmful gases during laser processing;
 Laser radiation’s direct sunlight will cause body harm.
 The machine location must equip with fire fighting equipments, so forbidden
something combustible and explosive around the machine. Non-trained people are
forbidden to operate the machine.
 Processing material and emission should conform to local laws and regulations.
 The user should consider carefully whether processing materials are suitable for
laser working for risk reason.
 The operator is forbidden to leave during operating and must cut off switch when
finishing work
 Forbid open any cover during working.
 Make sure the wire connects well with the ground before operating.
 Forbid the things in connected diffuse reflection around the machine for fear the
laser light reflect the person or incentive directly (advice use fire hose reel box in
location of working)
