- 6. AIR POLLUTION • Release of pollutants into the air • Pollutant-gases, particles , biological moleclues , etc … • Harmful to human health and environment • Ex : Industrial effluence , Vehicle emision
- 7. TYPES OF AIR POLLUTANTS • Primary pollutant • Secondary pollutant
- 8. PRIMARY POLLUTANT • The agents which affect the quality of air- primary pollutant • Direct source • EX:CO,Sox,SO2,NOX,aerosols(dust,ash)
- 9. SECONDARY POLLUTANT • Agents produced from the reactant of primary pollutants, that cause air pollution • Indirect source • Ex : smog(formed as a result of interaction of primary pollutant with molecular oxygen , hydro carbon , water),ozone(reaction of NO , CO , in presences of sunlight)
- 10. CAUSES Burning of fossil fuels- SO2,CO Automobiles- CO2,CO,NOX,SPM Agricultural activities- insecticides , fertilizers , burning ,(ammonia) Factories and industries- CO,NOX,O3,NO2 Mining activities- mercury,lead,SO2,NOX(spread by wind) Domestic sources- smoking , LPG , artificial fragrance
- 11. EFFECTS Diseases- lung cancer , heart disease , respiratory problem Global warming- melting of glaciers , increase in sea level and earth temperature Acid rain- skin disease , asthma , corrosion of structure , destroy insects Ozone layer depletion- uv rays enter the atmosphere , skin cancer
- 12. PREVENTIONS Afforestation Limiting the industrial emissions Avoid incineration Reduce the use of automobiles Avoid use of air conditioner Switch to environmentally sustainable alternatives( wind power, solar power)
