Causes of Water Pollution
Water pollution comes from factories that dump poisonous chemicals into
lakes and rivers. Water pollution can also come from farms. Farmers
put chemicals on the ground to help crops grow and to kill insects. Rain
can wash these chemicals into lakes and rivers.
Big ships called oil tankers can pollute the ocean if the oil leaks out of the
tankers. There can be a huge oil spill if a tanker has an accident and sinks
at sea.
A special kind of pollution comes from nuclear power plants. Nuclear
power plants produce radioactive waste. This waste lasts for thousands of
years and can cause cancer and other deadly illnesses if it is not properly
stored.
Polluted Water
The pollution of rivers, streams, and oceans has become a serious
problem around the world. Pollution can come from many sources,
including factories, farms, sewage, and illegal dumping.
Industrial water pollution
Industrial Water Pollution
Industrial pollutants that run into streams, rivers, or
lakes can have serious effects on wildlife , plants, and
humans. In the United States there are strict rules for
the amount and composition of substances that factories can
release into bodies of water. These rules are not always
enforced, and much industrial water pollution comes from
accidental chemical or oil spills.
Oil Spill Clean Up
Oil Spill Cleanup
In 1989, a ship called the Exxon Valdez hit a reef
off the coast of Alaska, resulting in the biggest oil spill
in United States history. The oil spread over the
ocean, killing huge amounts of marine life.
Here, workers wash away oil on an island shoreline
after the accident.
Heap of Garbage
Garbage
People today create a lot of waste from all the products they
use. Much of this garbage is dumped in landfills, as shown
here, or burned. Sometimes these methods pollute the
surrounding air, soil, and water.
Air Pollution
Air Pollution
Air pollution is a serious problem in many parts of the world.
Smokestacks pump pollution into the air, harming the
environment and making it harder to breathe. The Polluted
Air Mixes with rain water and turns them into acid
which ultimately falls as rain in some areas and affect the
vegetation and water bodies to kill the animals living in
them.
