 Pollution, we hear it every other day at school,
college and read about it in newspapers.
 So what is it?
 Pollution occurs when pollutants
contaminate the natural surroundings; which
brings about changes that affect our normal
lifestyles adversely.
 Pollutants are the key elements or
components of pollution which are generally
waste materials of different forms.
 Pollution disturbs our ecosystem and the
balance in the environment.
 With modernization and development in our
lives pollution has reached its peak; giving
rise to global warming and human illness.
 When Harmful Substances Contaminate the
Environment, it is Called Pollution
 Pollution can take the form of chemical
substances or energy, such as noise, heat or
light.
 In 2015, pollution killed 9 million people in
the world.
 Water pollution
 Air pollution
 Soil pollution
 Thermal pollution
 Radioactive pollution
 Noise pollution
 Water pollution is one of the most serious
environmental problems.
 Water pollution has taken toll of all the
surviving species of the earth.
 Almost 60% of the species live in water
bodies.
 This type of pollution refers to the
contamination of bodies of water
including groundwater.
 As all living organisms depend on water to
live, the pollution of a body of water tends to
affect every level of the ecosystem, including
human health
 Common causes of water pollution include
industrial waste, insecticides, pesticides, and
fertilizers, detergents and oil spills.
 These pollutants either work by killing off
organisms through their toxicity (industrial
waste, insecticides), or reducing oxygen values
in the water (known as Eutrophication) by
blocking out sunlight (detergents, oil).
 Pollution of water bodies by mercury causes
Minamata disease in humans and dropsy in
fishes. Lead causes dyslexia, cadmium
poisoning causes Itai – itai disease etc
 Oil pollution of sea occurs from leakage from
ships, oil tankers, rigs and pipelines. Accidents
of oil tankers spill large quantity of oil in seas
which kills marine birds and adversely affects
other marine life and beaches
 Air is usually comprised of 78% nitrogen, 21%
oxygen, 0.9% oxide gases and 0.1% inert gases.
 Air pollution is actually harmful substances in the
atmosphere which damages the environment. With
the development of industries, came along the
increase in air pollution.
 When the air becomes contaminated with other
elements such as poisonous gases or particles, it
can cause serious problems to human health.
 Industries.
 Automobiles and Domestic fuels.
 High Proportion of undesirable gases, such as
sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide.
 Dust (e.g. cement dust, foundry dust and
windblown solid dust)
 Mist.
 Smoke.
 Carbon black.
 Aerosols.
 Soil can be stripped of it’s nutrients (and
therefore fertility) by a number of chemical
agents and when this occurs, it is known as
soil pollution.
 Soil pollution is defined as the contamination
of soil of a particular region.

 Industrial wastes such as harmful gases and chemicals,
agricultural pesticides, fertilizers and insecticides are
the most common causes of soil pollution
 Ignorance towards soil management and related
systems.
 Unfavorable and harmful irrigation practices.
 Improper septic system and management and
maintenance of the same.
 Leakages from sanitary sewage.
 Acid rain, when fumes released from industries mix with
rain.
 Fuel leakage from automobiles that get washed away due
to rain and seep into nearby soil.
 Unhealthy waste management techniques, which are
characterized by release of sewage into the large dumping
grounds and nearby streams or rivers.
 Thermal pollution is defined as 'degradation
of water quality by any process that changes
ambient water temperature'.
 When the temperature of the natural water
resources begins to vary due to external
reasons such as inflow of industrial water, it
brings about a change in water temperature.
 it occurs when an industry removes water from
a source (e.g. river) uses the water for cooling
purposes and then returns the heated water to
its source
 Power plants heat water to convert it into steam
to drive the turbines that generate electricity
 Nuclear power plants
 Hydro-electric power
 Coal fired power plants
 Industrial waste
 Deforestation
 Soil erosion
 Burning of fossil fuels
 Atomic power Plants
 Domestic Sewage
 The term 'radiation' can refer to a wide variety
of forms of energy moving around as waves or
particles. It can mean x-rays, or it can mean
microwaves. It can also refer to infrared light
and even visible light. But when we say
'radioactive pollution,' we're being more specific.
 Radioactive pollution refers to the release of
ionizing radiation into the environment as a
result of human activity.
 Ionizing radiation is the form of radiation
that has a short wavelength and a high
frequency. In short, it's the form of radiation
that's commonly thought of as being high
energy and thus harmful to living things.
Ionizing radiation includes x-rays and
gamma rays.
 Radioactive pollution that is spread through
earth’s atmosphere is called fallout The best
example of fallout is d nuclear bomb attack on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1945 by
united states of America during world war 2
 Radioactive pollution can be defined as the
release of radioactive substances or high-
energy particles into the air, water, or earth as a
result of human activity, either by accident or by
design.
 Nuclear accidents from nuclear energy
generation plants
 The use of nuclear weapons as weapons of
mass destruction (WMD)
 Use of radio isotopes
 Mining
 Spillage of radioactive chemicals
 Tests on radiation
 Cosmic rays
 Noise pollution is defined as an unwanted
or disturbing sound that interferes with
normal activities.
 Noise is best described as any unwanted
sound.
 Industrialization
 Poor Urban Planning
 Social Events
 Transportation
 Construction Activities
 Household Chores
