Literary Nonfiction Analysis
Working Definitions: When I enrolled in Introduction to Journalism and
Nonfiction, I expected to be spending the majority of the time reading primarily
political articles about happenings in the US and analyzing the structure to write
our own. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to find that we studied selections with
a lot more creativity. To me, literary nonfiction is similar to reading a primary
source for a history class, but one that may not necessarily be primarily seeking to
report on facts. One couldn t cite a literary nonfiction piece in a historical analysis
essay, but one could personally increase his or her understanding of an event or
period in time by reading literary nonfiction. It seems that the readings that we ve

As one of my first paragraphs, I wrote: Cars permeate my life in the most
unthinkable ways: I go on frequent aimless journeys just for the pleasure of
driving; I hallucinate a rumbling Lamborghini V10 engine as I run, as though the
Lamborghini has swallowed my soul; my computer s desktop image has always
portrayed my favorite car; and friends are put to sleep as I spend hours describing
common rail diesel injection as though I am an alternative to melatonin. In this

Dominique LaPierre s Is Paris Burning? argues that without the liberation of Paris,
Hitler s plan would have been to leave Paris as a smoldering city that nobody could
return to. The process of liberating Paris from Germany was not a one man job and
took multiple forces from the outside as well as from within Paris. LaPierre
informs the reader that upon further research into the subject of the liberation of
Paris it took many different people from many different parts of the world to get
rid of the German forces that held the capital hostage. The historians and student
researchers of the world can use the information provided as a base knowledge to
further our understanding of World War II. Through his use of others personal
narratives he is able to fully describe the events taking place before and after the

He begins with a narrative of the German forces and their meeting with Hitler and
how their actions led to the destruction of much of Paris. He gives direct quotes from
officials and generals within the German army to describe the thought process behind
these actions of Hitler and his associates. With the inclusion of the French
perspectives, how they fought back against the German forces, as well as the steps
they took to protect their city ties everything together and gives the story true
meaning. LaPierre uses others personal Narratives to give the reader an emotional
attachment to many of the characters and how the situation each one was put through
truly affected their mental and physical health. Throughout the book it is very clear

Abraham Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address
On March 4, 1865 Abraham Lincoln delivered his second inaugural address as
president of the United States. The inaugural address came at the very end of the
American Civil War, and just a month before the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
Prior to this address, the United States had been split into two different independent
states, the Union and the Confederacy. Throughout Abraham Lincolns first term and
the very beginning of his second, Lincoln had to deal with the secession of the
eleven states that made up the Confederacy. Also during the war, Lincoln
competed in the 1864 presidential election in which his leadership was challenged
by George B. McClellan. This inaugural address was important at the time, and
remains a relic of Abraham Lincoln s powerful speaking ability. In the late 1850 s,
tension were rising between the northern states and the southern states. These
tensions began long ago, but continued to rise before the election of 1860. The
main topic of debate at this time was slavery. Southern states relied on slavery for
economic production. Many in the north wanted to limit the spread of slavery, or
outright ban it. Those opposed to slavery had numerous reasons from political to
ethical and religious reasons. The election of 1860 had 4 large candidates: Abraham
Lincoln, John C Breckinridge, John Bell, and Stephen A. Douglas. Abraham Lincoln
won the popular vote and electoral vote and was elected president in 1860, taking
