On 9 February 2016 Guy's and St Thomas' Charity brought together health professionals, decision-makers, voluntary organisations, patient representatives and others in Lambeth and Southwark to explore ways of improving health by looking outside the confines of healthcare. We wanted to showcase and discuss approaches to improving health outcomes which tackle the wider aspects that impact on people’s wellbeing – from housing to education or social connections.

Navigating through service developments and improvement can at times be difficult. This difficulty can be even more challenging when working across organisations/ sectors. What is a challenge for one sector is a way of life for another. The language we use and our ideas of social philosophy can provide a rich platform to develop or a rocky shore of pitfalls. Throw into the mix the requirements of CYP IAPT and service transform and you could have a perfect storm! In this workshop we hope to show that these choppy waters can lead to calm seas and the value we can gain from each other far outweighs any difficulties. The value of understanding each other positions, learning from each other and ultimately delivering a better service is at the end of the day what we all want.

In 1996, John McGowan and Dale Gerding first applied the term antimicrobial stewardship, where they suggested a causal association between antimicrobial agent use and resistance. They also focused on the urgency of large-scale controlled trials of antimicrobial-use regulation employing sophisticated epidemiologic methods, molecular typing, and precise resistance mechanism analysis.
Antimicrobial Stewardship(AMS) refers to the optimal selection, dosing, and duration of antimicrobial treatment resulting in the best clinical outcome with minimal side effects to the patients and minimal impact on subsequent resistance.
According to the 2019 report, in the US, more than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur each year, and more than 35000 people die. In addition to this, it also mentioned that 223,900 cases of Clostridoides difficile occurred in 2017, of which 12800 people died. The report did not include viruses or parasites

• POET developed over 10 years by In Control and Lancaster University
to check the experience and outcomes with people using personal
budgets and carers
• So far two National Personal Budget Surveys, with a third due to be
published in the autumn
• Versions developed for staff, providers, people with personal health
budgets and being tested for children with education, health and care
plans and personal budgets
• Today’s focus is on adult social care covering personal budget users,
carers and staff
5. Where we are now
• Care Minister Norman Lamb’s ambition is that all councils adopt a way of
checking the impact of personal budgets
• In Control has received some core DH funding to assist councils to start
using POET
6. The two offers are:
• Do it yourself – Gives access to the survey questionnaires, online
portal to upload and analyse data, and local reports comparing results
with a growing national data set. This option is free.
• Supported POET – Gives bespoke support, including facilitation of pre
and post survey engagement and a more detailed report and analysis
tailored to the locality. Cost £1,950 plus VAT and expenses

10. For the free text responses, we used themes that had emerged from the first
National personal budget survey. The list of themes was updated to reflect
free text comments included in this years survey.
Each quote was then examined and assigned to one or more themes
depending on what the person had written – for most comments a judgement
was also made on whether the comment was mainly positive, or neutral in
relation to the theme.
