- 3. Poetic Devices POETIC DEVICES 1.Speaker- A person who delivers a speech or a lecture. 2. Diction- The choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing. 3. Imagery- Visually descriptive or figura- tive language used especially in literary work.XXXX 4. Allusion- The practice of making such references especially as an artistic de- vice. 5. Simile- The figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with an- other thing of a different kind. (example: He was as strong as a lion) 6. Personification- A figure used to repre- sent an abstract quality. 7. Metaphor- A thing regarded as repre- sentative or symbolic of something else, esp. something abstract. 8. Refrain- A repeated line or number of lines in a poem or song, typically at the end of each verse. XXX 9.
