2. "LANGUAGES" BY CARL SANDBURG
Carl Sandburg talks about how language changes over time. How some
words come in and some words go. This poem was written in 1918
when most of the country was focused on the first World War. When
Sandburg died in 1967 the country was at a very weird point in It’s life.
The civil rights movement peaked more of thee stereotypes were
directed African Americans rather than the people of the countries we
were at war with when the poem was written. This is kind of tight
because Carl Sandburg really got to see how language and slang
changed over time.
3. "THE RIVER MERCHANT'S WIFE: A LETTER" BY
EZRA POUND
The river merchants wife follows the life of a girl who got married at
the young age of 14. The poem is written in the form of a letter, as
clearly stated in the name of the poem. She goes on to talk about how
she’s adjusted to the marriage and does love him. At the time this
poem was written it could have been normal to get married at such a
fertile age. In todays society that would never happen. This poems
shows how times have changed.
