men at a very young age. When married the men
often treated their wife's like property.
In this poem, the husband is having to leave his
wife due to traveling for work. During this time
transportation and technology were advancing.
The wife on the other hand wanted her husband
home to see everything evolving.
This was also the era when the world war 1
occurred and also when woman were gaining more
rights such as woman suffrage.

going on in the worlds nation. In America in the early
20th century lots of immigrants came in and lots of
cultures were mixed together. Carl Sandburg talks
about how words used today will all be forgotten.
During the early 20th century, education for young
children was starting to become more and more
important. Everyone all had their own different
languages and soon that would all change!
All he is pretty much saying is how everything around
us is changing. How much the cultures, languages and
how everything is done are changing and those things
will soon be forgotten and changed.
