  • #2 Welcome to the IPD project management video series. In this series IPD YouTube viewers will learn about various certifications in Project Management field, and specific to Project Management Professional or most known as PMP Certification.
  • #3 This video is for those who are new to PMP or who want to refresh and update themselves with recent changes effective January 2021. You will also learn how many professionals are PMP so far, to assess the PMP popularity. I will try to describe the value of PMP certifications its increasing demand in various industries across the world. This may help you to provide clarity and make decision to pursue PMP as career progression tool and bring a positive change.
  • #6 What is PMP? PMP stands for Project Management Professional. It is a certification awarded to qualifying candidates who meet certain requirements and pass an examination. It is most valued certification in the field of Project Management. PMP internationally recognised and in-demand professional designation. PMP applies across many disciplines, sectors, and industries. PMP is the most popular certification, offered by PMI.
  • #7 PMI stands for the Project Management Institute. PMI is a non-profit, non-government, private membership organization and it has more than six hundred thousand members. PMI’s headquarter is in United States of America. PMI celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019. PMI works for promoting Project Management Knowledge and best practices in Project Management. PMI has produced many publications including global standards and practice guides. PMI is the Institute who awards various certifications to qualifying candidates including PMP certification.
  • #8 Let us have a look at certifications awarded by PMI to qualifying candidates. These certifications can be divided into two major categories: General category and Special category. In the general category are the Project Management Professionals, Certified Associate in Project Management, Program Management Professional, and Portfolio Management Professional. Whereas in Special Category are PMI-Professional in Business Analysis, PMI-Agile Certified Practitioner, PMI-Risk Management Professional, and PMI-Scheduling Professional. Recently PMI has also introduced a new Agile Certified Series.
  • #9 Shown on screen is popularity graph, which shows the growth of PMP designation holders over the years. In year 1990 the number was just approximately to 1000. However, we see that in later years the numbers went incredibly high at an exponential rate in last 20 years. In 2020, the number have crossed the 1 Million figure and yet increasing. Most importantly, these PMP credential holder are spread over 205 countries across the world. The continuous increase in numbers shows the popularity, interest, and confidence of professionals and employers in project management professionals' certification.

  • #13 You might have a big question by now, Is PMP for Me? or Can I earn PMP? But certainly, you are the one to answer these questions, however following self-analysis can help you make good decision.   If you are motivated towards professional development, continuous learning, and interested in seeking Project Management knowledge. Want to Lead and direct projects with command and authority to successful completion. Motivated to career growth, want to progress, and looking for challenging global opportunities. Meantime if want recognition and want to distinguish yourself among peers and among professional community. Then It might be the best choice to pursue PMP certification. But only if you are also willing to spare time, money and put some hard work. If that is also true that you it may be excellent move and forward yourself on Project Management Professional Certification Path and bring a positive change in career.
  • #14 Your next question then may be How to get PMP? To answer that we move to Section 2 and discus the PMP Certifications requirements or eligibility criteria. Application, Exam Process and understand roadmap leading to PMP Certification.
  • #15 We may divide the Roadmap leading to PMP Certification in three phases: 1. Pre-Exam, 2. Exam and 3. Post Exam. We will discuss briefly each phase in next few minutes.. In pre-Exam phase, basically candidates must do a self assessment, to see if they meet the required eligibility criteria. Once eligibility criteria is met, candidates can move to application process. Subject to approval of application, candidates may enter into second phase where they can prepare themselves and sit in the Exam. After passing the exam, candidate celebrate and become a PMP. Third phase is about maintenance of the PMP certification for rest of the career.
  • #16 Let us first talk the PMP Certification eligibility criteria to do a self assessment. Eligibility Criteria is based on three major items: 1. Education, 2. Project Management Experience and 3. Project Management Training. According to the candidate’s education, a specific numbers of years experience is required, along with specific number of hours of Training.
  • #17 Project Management Experience Requirement is termed in numbers of years, and dependent on candidate’s education and changes accordingly. In case of Diploma holders, candidate must meet 5 years of Project Management Experience requirement before they apply for PMP certification. In case of 4 years Bachelors degree, this requirement is 3 years, and for Master’s degree holders it is 2 years. The experience must demonstrate a non-overlapping work of managing, directing and leading projects over the last 8 consecutive year
  • #18 Project Management Training requirement is in terms of contact hours and does not change with candidate education. To qualify for PMP, candidate have to demonstrate 35 Contact Hours of training, in addition to experience requirement. One contact hour is equivalent of one hour of classroom instruction. Training received from your employer, training company, PMI Authorized Training Partner, or university college academic or continuing education program, can be counted towards eligibility. However, PMP Candidate who already having PMI Certification “Certified Associate in Project Management” are exempted from training requirement. If you have completed a university or college course on project management that met for three hours per week for 15 weeks, you would record 45 contact hours.
  • #19  What next, If candidates determines through self-assessment find meet the eligibility criteria of Experience and Training. Next is application process. Application is submitted online at PMI website. Candidates must fill the Their Contact Information Education information Project Management Experience and Training received
  • #20 Once application is processed PMI will ask candidate to pay fee, which is also be paid online. Fee is to be paid in the US dollar and varies based on your PMI membership status. For For PMI Members it is US$ 405, while for non-members it is US$ 555. PMI membership fee is US$129 a year. To apply for PMP Certification you don’t have to be a Member of PMI, however there is saving in exam fee along with various additional members benefits.
  • #21 So, to summarize the application process, Candidate fill the application, record education, experience, and training. Once application reviewed, pay exam fee. Upon approval candidate get an Eligibility ID, which is key to move into Exam process.
  • #22   There are two types of Exam First type is Center Based Testing or CBT, In this type of exam candidate can sit in the exam at a local Pearson VUE Testing Center Second Type is Online Proctor Testing or OPT. In this type you can take the exam online with the comfort of being at home or in office. This type of exam is monitored via webcam and microphone. You need a computer and internet connection. Over 50,000 in 2020 have successfully taken their PMP certification exam online. From the date of issue of Eligibility ID, candidate has one year period to schedule an exam Candidate schedule exam at PMI Website and then directed to Pearson VUE website. After scheduling exam, it is time now to refresh the Project Management Knowledge, Study and Prepare for the PMP Certification Examination.
  • #23  After scheduling exam, it is time now to refresh the Project Management Knowledge, Syudy and Prepare for the PMP Certification Examination. PMP Certification exam follow the content outline issued by PMI. Effective January 2021 a new exam outline is introduced. Which is totally changed from the earlier content outline, where percentage of questions was based on five Project Management process. Current outline effective January 2021, percentage of questions in exam is based on three domains, which are People (42%) Process (50%) and Business Environment (8%). Before siting in exam prepare well.
  • #24 PMP® Exam is Available in 15 Languages Exam Time is 230 Minutes. Two 10 minute breaks. Exam consists of 180 questions, No negative marking for wrong answers, Exam performance report is immediately available after close of exam. Candidates receive a printed copy of your preliminary test results, along with an overall pass/fail status,
  • #25 Upon passing exam you get an elegant certificate; a digital version of certificate can also be downloaded from PMI website. You may also get digital badge from PMI partner web Acclaim. The online Certification Registry automatically lists names of PMI’s certification holders. This feature allows search and verification of certification holder. You are authorized to use the PMP designation in block letters after your name on business cards, personal letterhead, resumes, and websites and in your email signature.
  • #26  Everyone who earns a PMP certification has to maintain the certification and renew certification every 3 years. PMP credential holders must earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs), in three year period. Pay Renewal Fee and get a Renewal Certificate for next three years cycle. PDU stands for Professional Development Unit One hour of learning, teaching, volunteering accounts to one PDU. These PDUs can be earned in a variety of ways, such as; . Register Continuing education classes, Attending Seminars, webinars, or Self-directed learning. PDUs during PMP certification maintenance period can also be earned by giving back to community and spending time in Teaching, Volunteering and mentoring young professionals.
