Updates for Nov & Dec
WE ARE PLEASED TO SHARE OUR MEMBERSHIP PORTFOLIO HIGHLIGHTS:
4
We began the year with 1,378 members in January, and I’m thrilled to share that by December, we
have grown to over 3,000 members! This expansion has not only increased our chapter’s impact but also
allowed us to engage with a larger network of project management professionals. Through this growth, we've
been able to share valuable learnings, best practices, and foster meaningful collaborations.
In 2024, we proudly achieved the highest retention rate in South Asia, which is a testament to the
strong sense of community and value our members find within PMI Chennai. This success was further
supported by our active engagement through Knowledge Sharing Sessions (KSS), Group of Chapters
(GCoP), and various workshops throughout the year.
We are immensely grateful to all our members for their trust and continuous support. As we look ahead, we are
excited about the new initiatives discussed during our AGM meetings and many more to come. One of the
highlights will be our member connect events, starting with the Kovai Sangamam in Coimbatore on
January 25th, which we hope to see many of you at.
Thank you for being an integral part of our journey, and we look forward to continuing our growth and
collaboration in 2025.!

Why Most AI Projects Fail: 10 Mistakes to Avoid
The shocking truth: 70-80% of AI projects fail! Despite the buzz around Artificial
Intelligence (AI) and its potential to revolutionize industries, a surprising 70-80% of AI
projects fail—talk about a reality check!
Why do so many AI initiatives, brimming with promise and potential, end up falling short?
Not surprisingly, there are a number of top reasons for these failures, but surprisingly
simple ways to navigate these challenges.
Mistake #1: AI is not app development or coding – The first misstep
Mistake #2: ROI misalignment – What’s your true north?
Mistake #3: Data quantity – The lifeblood of AI
Mistake #4: Data quality – Garbage in, garbage out
Mistake #5: Proof of concept or proof of confusion?
Mistake #6: Training data vs. real-world data – The great divide
Mistake #7: Resource underestimation – The invisible iceberg
Mistake #8: Neglecting AI maintenance and evolution
Mistake #9: Falling for vendor hype
Mistake #10: The overpromise underdeliver syndrome

MEMBER SHOWCASE: IDEAS, INSIGHTS, AND
INSPIRATION"
Showcase 1 : Book Review by Laxmi Advani
Blink: Power of Unconscious thinking ‘by Malcolm Gladwell:
Blink is about the power of the mind. It is 296 pages long organized into six sections along with an
introduction and conclusion. Each section is a series of interrelated stories of interrelated perspectives
on the overall theme. In Blink, Gladwell outlined three objectives of the book:
Quick decisions can be as good as slow, deliberate decisions.
We need to know when to trust our instincts and when to ignore them.
We can learn to control our snap decisions.
The book began with a powerful story about the sale of a statue to the J. Paul Getty Museum in
California. The museum researched the statue at length before purchasing it. However, art experts
looked at it and immediately believed something was wrong. They made a snap judgment regarding
authenticity. It seems the art experts are right, it is a forgery. In subsequent stories, Gladwell showed
the power of using instinct to make decisions as well as times where instincts produced horrible
results.
The human mind has two decision-making mechanisms. One is extremely fast, it is the one that does
its best to keep us safe. The other is more rational. The key to success is being able to harness the
correct part of the brain at the right time.
In this book, Malcolm Gladwell suggests how at times it is snap judgment which is often more effective
than well calculated and thought-out judgments. The book starts with a story of how a museum got a
sculpture which they believed to be rare belonging to the sixth century. All necessary tests were done
to ascertain this, and the claim seemed correct. But one art historian just glanced at it and knew it was
fake. Later on, the sculpture really turned out to be fake.
The main premise that Malcolm Gladwell uses is adaptive unconscious which is a part of our brain that
leads to rapid cognition. To this, he adds the concept of thin slicing by which our brain deletes the
unnecessary details and based on past experiences helps us come at rapid decisions and judgments.
While he argues that snap judgment has its merits, he also provides a counter view of this as to when
we need to be careful with regard to snap judgments. He informs us how we have at time biases or
stereotypes that can play an important part in rapid cognition and thus we can take wrong decisions.
Also, at times the situation and our biological adaptation to that makes us take the wrong decision. To
arrive at the best decision thus it is necessary to ensure that such prejudices and stereotypes are not
the factors impacting our decisions and we need to thin slice effectively to get the benefits of snap
judgment.
We’re proud to showcase the incredible work of our members – Your voices
shape the future of our community!
12
MEMBER SHOWCASE: IDEAS, INSIGHTS, AND
INSPIRATION"
With a slew of examples and stories Malcolm Gladwell really helps one understand this concept of
adaptive unconscious and thin slicing. He presents examples that are interesting and really arrest the
attention. The fact that he points out both a pro and counter impact of snap judgment makes one
understand the concept better.Post-reading this one I pondered on some of the past decisions I took,
and I could actually recognize the pattern in it. Like most of Malcolm Gladwell books, I would urge you
to add this to your reading list and I am sure you will not be disappointed.
Showcase 2: Article by Aparna Grandhi
What comes to your mind when we say ‘Agile’? Agility has become one of the most widely discussed
topics in all the industries, as the businesses strive to stay competitive in the ever-changing markets.
While many organizations are following a set of Agile practices and methodologies such as Scrum,
Kanban, Lean, etc., however, only a small number of them truly embrace the essence of Agile.
Risking Agile?
When senior leadership decides to adapt Agile within an organization, they typically have aggressive
expectations such as:
Instant Customer Delight
Everyone in the organization already has an Agile Mindset
Scaling is easy
High confidence in succeeding Agile
Overemphasis on Speed
Agile as a silver bullet for all the problems
Culture-fit
These expectations may go unrealistic; if the organization is not fully prepared, if Agile momentum is
started as yet another initiative, or if the investments are made for the sake of practicing Agile. This
could lead to a catastrophic failure and is equivalent to ‘risking agile itself’.
Risk in Agile?
Agile Practices such as XP, Scrum, DSDM, etc. are aligned on highlighting the risks, as early as possible.
These practices enable everyone in not only early detection of risks, but in taking proactive measures to
manage and mitigate risks more effectively.
Agile focuses on collaborative risk management that engages & involves all the stakeholders such as
teams, product owners, business leaders, and even customers; rather than just one or two people. Here
is how to focus on understanding various risks and use appropriate techniques to deal with those risks.
Title: Risking Agile (or) Risk in Agile?
13
MEMBER SHOWCASE: IDEAS, INSIGHTS, AND
INSPIRATION"
Quality risks can be addressed through:
Frequent Verification and Validation (FVV) through frequent sprint reviews
Test Driven Development (TDD) / Acceptance Test Driven Development (ATDD) focusing on
‘Test-First approach’
Pair Programming
The 4 Agile Testing Quadrants (Technology & Business facing tests that supports the team and
critique the product)
Continuous Integration
Paying attention to retrospectives
Behaviour Driven Development
Clear Technical debt by Refactoring
Automated tests
Process & Implementation risks in Agile can be addressed through:
Planning Poker
Daily Scrum
Addressing impediments
Sprint Review
Sprint Retrospectives
Entire team checks-in clean code every day, as per XP Practice
Information Radiators
Planning related risks in Agile can be addressed through:
Product Roadmap
Value Stream Mapping
Velocity driven Planning
Capacity driven Planning
Flow-based / Iteration-based Agile
Think twice - Are you risking Agile? or dealing with risk in Agile?
Agile practices, by itself, acts as early warning signs on the risks. The ability to identify, assess and
address the risks, throughout every cycle, is one of the core strengths of the Agile. Agile brings
ownership from all the stakeholders and enable them in Being Agile (not just doing Agile).
Test the rubber on the road – Fail fast through MVPs (Minimum Viable Product) and MMFs
(Minimum Marketable Feature)
Risk adjusted Backlog (Contingencies and Risk Exposure)
Spikes (technical / business risks mitigation)
Business Risks can be addressed proactively through:
Product Backlog Prioritization (MOSCOW, Do ‘High Risk High Value’ items first, KANO model,
etc.)
Stakeholder enlightenment (What you ask, may not be, what you really need, Participation in
frequent Demos & give regular feedback)
Retrospection – with a true introspection of the 3 Agile roles (Team members, Product Owner &
Scrum Master)

MEMBER SHOWCASE: IDEAS,INSIGHTS, AND INSPIRATION" Showcase 1 : Book Review by Laxmi Advani Blink: Power of Unconscious thinking ‘by Malcolm Gladwell: Blink is about the power of the mind. It is 296 pages long organized into six sections along with an introduction and conclusion. Each section is a series of interrelated stories of interrelated perspectives on the overall theme. In Blink, Gladwell outlined three objectives of the book: Quick decisions can be as good as slow, deliberate decisions. We need to know when to trust our instincts and when to ignore them. We can learn to control our snap decisions. The book began with a powerful story about the sale of a statue to the J. Paul Getty Museum in California. The museum researched the statue at length before purchasing it. However, art experts looked at it and immediately believed something was wrong. They made a snap judgment regarding authenticity. It seems the art experts are right, it is a forgery. In subsequent stories, Gladwell showed the power of using instinct to make decisions as well as times where instincts produced horrible results. The human mind has two decision-making mechanisms. One is extremely fast, it is the one that does its best to keep us safe. The other is more rational. The key to success is being able to harness the correct part of the brain at the right time. In this book, Malcolm Gladwell suggests how at times it is snap judgment which is often more effective than well calculated and thought-out judgments. The book starts with a story of how a museum got a sculpture which they believed to be rare belonging to the sixth century. All necessary tests were done to ascertain this, and the claim seemed correct. But one art historian just glanced at it and knew it was fake. Later on, the sculpture really turned out to be fake. The main premise that Malcolm Gladwell uses is adaptive unconscious which is a part of our brain that leads to rapid cognition. To this, he adds the concept of thin slicing by which our brain deletes the unnecessary details and based on past experiences helps us come at rapid decisions and judgments. While he argues that snap judgment has its merits, he also provides a counter view of this as to when we need to be careful with regard to snap judgments. He informs us how we have at time biases or stereotypes that can play an important part in rapid cognition and thus we can take wrong decisions. Also, at times the situation and our biological adaptation to that makes us take the wrong decision. To arrive at the best decision thus it is necessary to ensure that such prejudices and stereotypes are not the factors impacting our decisions and we need to thin slice effectively to get the benefits of snap judgment. We’re proud to showcase the incredible work of our members – Your voices shape the future of our community! 12

MEMBER SHOWCASE: IDEAS,INSIGHTS, AND INSPIRATION" With a slew of examples and stories Malcolm Gladwell really helps one understand this concept of adaptive unconscious and thin slicing. He presents examples that are interesting and really arrest the attention. The fact that he points out both a pro and counter impact of snap judgment makes one understand the concept better.Post-reading this one I pondered on some of the past decisions I took, and I could actually recognize the pattern in it. Like most of Malcolm Gladwell books, I would urge you to add this to your reading list and I am sure you will not be disappointed. Showcase 2: Article by Aparna Grandhi What comes to your mind when we say ‘Agile’? Agility has become one of the most widely discussed topics in all the industries, as the businesses strive to stay competitive in the ever-changing markets. While many organizations are following a set of Agile practices and methodologies such as Scrum, Kanban, Lean, etc., however, only a small number of them truly embrace the essence of Agile. Risking Agile? When senior leadership decides to adapt Agile within an organization, they typically have aggressive expectations such as: Instant Customer Delight Everyone in the organization already has an Agile Mindset Scaling is easy High confidence in succeeding Agile Overemphasis on Speed Agile as a silver bullet for all the problems Culture-fit These expectations may go unrealistic; if the organization is not fully prepared, if Agile momentum is started as yet another initiative, or if the investments are made for the sake of practicing Agile. This could lead to a catastrophic failure and is equivalent to ‘risking agile itself’. Risk in Agile? Agile Practices such as XP, Scrum, DSDM, etc. are aligned on highlighting the risks, as early as possible. These practices enable everyone in not only early detection of risks, but in taking proactive measures to manage and mitigate risks more effectively. Agile focuses on collaborative risk management that engages & involves all the stakeholders such as teams, product owners, business leaders, and even customers; rather than just one or two people. Here is how to focus on understanding various risks and use appropriate techniques to deal with those risks. Title: Risking Agile (or) Risk in Agile? 13
  • 14.
MEMBER SHOWCASE: IDEAS,INSIGHTS, AND INSPIRATION" Quality risks can be addressed through: Frequent Verification and Validation (FVV) through frequent sprint reviews Test Driven Development (TDD) / Acceptance Test Driven Development (ATDD) focusing on ‘Test-First approach’ Pair Programming The 4 Agile Testing Quadrants (Technology & Business facing tests that supports the team and critique the product) Continuous Integration Paying attention to retrospectives Behaviour Driven Development Clear Technical debt by Refactoring Automated tests Process & Implementation risks in Agile can be addressed through: Planning Poker Daily Scrum Addressing impediments Sprint Review Sprint Retrospectives Entire team checks-in clean code every day, as per XP Practice Information Radiators Planning related risks in Agile can be addressed through: Product Roadmap Value Stream Mapping Velocity driven Planning Capacity driven Planning Flow-based / Iteration-based Agile Think twice - Are you risking Agile? or dealing with risk in Agile? Agile practices, by itself, acts as early warning signs on the risks. The ability to identify, assess and address the risks, throughout every cycle, is one of the core strengths of the Agile. Agile brings ownership from all the stakeholders and enable them in Being Agile (not just doing Agile). Test the rubber on the road – Fail fast through MVPs (Minimum Viable Product) and MMFs (Minimum Marketable Feature) Risk adjusted Backlog (Contingencies and Risk Exposure) Spikes (technical / business risks mitigation) Business Risks can be addressed proactively through: Product Backlog Prioritization (MOSCOW, Do ‘High Risk High Value’ items first, KANO model, etc.) Stakeholder enlightenment (What you ask, may not be, what you really need, Participation in frequent Demos & give regular feedback) Retrospection – with a true introspection of the 3 Agile roles (Team members, Product Owner & Scrum Master) 14
