Project Management Methodology
To better meet customer expectations, improve the quality and delivery of service, and continue building trust
across campus, ITS has developed a new framework for all projects that are over 80 hours. The Project
Management methodology provides staff with a consistent process—and supporting documents—for planning,
executing and tracking ITS projects. The methodology outlined here provides a framework for projects requiring
more than 80 hours of work, but the templates can be used with any project if staff members find them helpful.
The project management methodology has seven phases. Each phase has supporting documents to help with
planning and execution. These are living documents and are meant to be updated as needed during the course
of a project; in fact, each project phase includes updating the documents from the previous phase.
By using this methodology, ITS projects will be more predictable, and ITS will be able to set and adhere to clear
expectations both internally and externally. In addition, the methodology will allow ITS to gather consistent
information from project to project, predict timelines and outcomes more exactly, and engage in a continuous
improvement process.

guideline for projects.
