Introduction
Egypt has become for a long time a significant aspect in the
history of United States of America and the international
community. Egypt is among the largest owners of oil wells as
well as distinct tourist attractions. The pyramids of Egypt have
always attracted several individuals from across the globe. In
addition, its dominance of the ancient way of governance
displays the uniqueness that has been eroded in other countries.
United States of America has had an interest in Egypt in the
sense that it could be able to gain control over some of its oil
wells. United States had supplied its troops to assist the
Egyptian soldiers provide security and law and order in their
country (Kirkpatrick & Fahim, 2013). The international
community was concerned about the rate at which Egypt was
collapsing resulting from poor governance.
The quest for democracy is considered one of the leading causes
of battles between and among Egyptians. Ever since the Egypt
4. was declared a republic in 1953, it has encountered massive
demonstrations, wars and riots resulting from denial of human
rights. Bombings targeting foreigners were evident in some
parts of the country. Assassination of their earlier leaders took
place in several accounts for instance in 1981 when Anwar al-
Sadat was assassinated by Jihad members. Such acts accelerated
the amount of hate among the rivaling individuals and groups. It
was clear that the citizens did not have any freedom of
expressions as witnessed from the harassment and arrest of
journalists who were trying to expose the government’s cruel
acts. On other accounts, the new constitutions brought tension
since it stripped the judiciary of its powers to try to scrutinize
decisions made by the president. The July 2013 military coup
that targeted on ousting the Islamists was of international
concern given that it implicated on human rights (Tamimi,
2014). President Mohamed Morsi was removed from power after
several demonstrations had been held asking him to quit.
Major Issues
The July 2013 military coup in Egypt came after the supporters
and opponents of President Mohamed Morsi could not agree on
anything. This emerged because Morsi and his close allies, the
Muslim Brotherhood took power upon themselves. The judicial
systems could not question any decision made by the president
yet during the campaigns; President Morsi told the citizens that
people power was more supreme. Being the first elected leader
in the history of Egypt, Morsi was believed to bring change but
what was witnessed illustrated a complete opposite of people's
expectation. It was the wish of the international community that
Egypt adopted democracy as it was portraying much
discrimination along religious and ethnic lines (Aziz, 2013).
That was thought to be dragging the economy of a nation whose
prosperity could be huge considering their richness in terms of
oil that is attracting super power nations like the United States
of America.
The coup took place after the military officials cautioned the
president and his opponents to resolve their internal issues
5. because it had spread to the citizens. A 48 hours ultimatum was
issued (Kirkpatrick & Fahim, 2013). However, it was evident
that the military had been planning to oust the president from
power given that there had been several accounts of
demonstrations across the country demanding that Morsi and his
administration be dissolved. The civilians were hinting need for
an early presidential election. General Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi
asserted that President Morsi wanted to use his power to misuse
the supreme authority bestowed upon him by the people who
elected him. El-Sisi's point of view was that the Morsi's
administration was going to lead the country into a political
turmoil that was not going to end any sooner. El-Sisi's
affirmation for his quest for a peaceful nation was witnessed
when he defied Morsi's orders in various instances.
Another vital issue that led to the military coup was the fact
that Morsi was allowing the Muslim militants to carry out their
operations freely. General El-Sisi's policies were differing from
that of Morsi. Clearly, Morsi's ways, of doing things, gave a
leeway to militants to cause havoc in the country hence several
people losing their lives and property destroyed. El-Sisi thought
Morsi was mismanaging his powers over criminals. On another
account, Morsi ordered El-Sisi to stop the onslaught carried
against the Jihadis event though the militant group was killing
most of the Egyptian soldiers. This idea angered the citizens
together with the military on the belief that the president did
not care for the law and order as well as peacekeepers in his
country. The Muslim Brotherhood being a militant group owned
by Morsi was another issue that agitated the public to go on a
rampage against the government in power then. The Muslim
Brotherhood was trying to mobilize the military to turn against
El-Sisi, who was becoming so powerful and influential. The
public demonstrated because they were not ready to see their
economy and democratically establishing nation to fall because
of selfish interests driven by the Muslim Brotherhood (Sharp,
2014). Given that, the military had been controlling the
decisions made by the president ever since the major 1952 coup.
6. For this reason, it did not have much influence on a president
coming out of the military.
Effects on the international community
The military coup had effects on the international community.
The event sharpened tension among the Muslim Brotherhood
and the secularists in the neighboring countries especially
Libya. This meant that the African nations were in the spotlight.
Nevertheless, the Egyptian coup that led to the establishment of
debates entailing civil-military relations and the security
department as a way of strengthening the political situation in
Libya. United States of America evidently felt another
implication since it had several of its soldier in Egypt (Tamimi,
A. (2014). The United States had its own political and economic
interests to take over some of the major oil wells in Egypt that
is why it was generous in deploying its troops to secure the
area. United States was advised by several analysts to withdraw
its soldiers until the turmoil had subsided. Obama’s
administration was hesitant to label the act as a coup.
The eruption of the military coup with the United States troops
portrayed the U.S soldiers have less significant in Egypt (Sharp,
2014). Being a super power nation, most people believed that
they had the best military tools and machines to predict and
counter any occurrence. Another major effect is the fact that the
event could not allow humanitarian aid to be supplied freely.
Humanitarian institutions had to halt their activities in Egypt
and neighboring countries especially those of Arab origin
because they could not assure its workers of their security.
Human rights were violated thus the United Nations had a hard
time trying to address such issues. Multinational organizations
doing businesses with Egypt had to stop their operations for the
period there was political instability. This means several
companies recorded low revenue during the year and part of the
next financial year. In addition, some agencies that had
experienced destabilization in their businesses had to pull out.
Significantly, the African Union had to re-evaluate the
participation of Egypt given that it was putting the continent at
7. risk. Political, social and economic ties with other continents
were weakening slowly.
Key political roles of the participants
Each of the actors during the event played an important political
role. The military led by General El-Sisi played a major role
since it organized the coup and executed it according to their
plans. The military ensured that President Morsi could not
remain in power for any longer because he had misused his
power and intimidated the basic rights of the citizens. On the
contrary, the military caused the suspension of the operation of
the constitution hence there was no democracy (Kirkpatrick &
Fahim, 2013). The United States played a political role where it
did not declare the event as a military coup in order to ensure
humanitarian aid could continue flowing in the country.
However, the main aim of the position taken by United States
was to appear as in support of the nation so that it could get its
share of being the sole controller of the oil wells. The Muslim
Brotherhood was to support of President Morsi staying in power
so that they could receive governmental support and freedom to
carry out its activities. They took to the street in protest of the
stand taken by the military terming it as unconstitutional since
the people had elected the then president.
Foreign policy decisions
Foreign policies by various governments in partnership with
Egypt took a different turn as they issued fresh stance. One of
the factors is the violation of human rights especially to
foreigners. Various countries could not allow their citizens to
be victims of human rights deprivation in a foreign land. The
fact that the nation was ruled by the military was a clear sign
that no business could be carried out. Foreign soldiers could not
be recognized hence prominent nations like the United States
had to halt their military aid in Egypt thus issuing new foreign
policy decisions (Aziz, 2013). The increasing Muslim militants
in the Egypt heightened tension given that such groups had been
had been associated with terrorist activities as witnessed in
other countries across the world. It is obvious that governments
8. had to be careful on how it trades with Egypt so that it does not
become a victim. Some countries went to an extent of
evacuating its citizens especially those on foreign envoys to
minimize the chances the government had to account for any
loss of life.
Conclusion
In conclusion, July 2013 political revolt in Egypt was a military
coup that appears to have been planned for a long time. It is
clear that the military had observed the way President Morsi
was carrying out its operations and opted to oust him by force if
he did not quit peacefully. The people were also tired of the acts
hence the several demonstrations against his administration.
The result affected United States and the entire international
community. The event led to the suspension of Egypt by the
African Union. United States put on halts its military aid to
Egypt until the turmoil was over.
