Narrative theory
1. Narrative Theory
Is your narrative linear or non-linear?
My book is non-linear as it contains flashbacks and dose not follow the story all
the way through. My book is about a man named Joel who has to search a ruined
city of monster to find chicken soup for his friend Marline. The story begins with
Marline at an older age and turns to her telling the story of him looking for the
chicken soup.
Is it an open or closed narrative?
My book has a closed narrative as the story finishes with a conclusion he finds
the soup and they live happily ever after.
Does it have a single or multiple strands?
My book is a multiple strand as the story follows different characters. The book
starts out with four of the characters playing basketball but leads to one of the
characters (Marline) telling a story of one of the other characters past.
Is it a realist or anti-realist narrative?
My book is anti-realist due to the fact it contains content that would never be
believable or real events. For example on of the main character is a vampire
these do not exist in the real world, another example would also be of the setting
it’s a ruined city that is filled with monsters and talking dogs none of these are
real existing things therefore my book is anti-realist
Which of the following narrative components have you used in your work
and how and why did you use them?
• Opening
-My book dose not begin with an opening it tends to just jump straight into the
story rather than starting the book with once upon a time my book begins with a
conversation between the characters.
• Conflict
- My book doses contain some conflict but not much on one of the pages the main
character ends up running into a monster and bangs a pan over his head. This is
the only conflict even though its not much my book but still will be classed as
conflict
2. • Resolution
- My book dose have a resolution as the main character finds the soup he was
looking for and manages to give it to the other main character he was obtaining it
for
• Enigma
- My book doses not contain Enigma my book tends to be straight forward and
follows a certain plot rather than give the reader a puzzle to figure out
• Climax
- My book dose not contain climax my characters tends to follow the objective of
what he is doing none of my characters have their fait change or change their
minds
• Manipulation of time and space
- My book dose us the manipulation of time and space due to the fact the book
has one of the characters telling a story which happened in the past the at the
beginning of my book I have the characters in one position but at the end they
have changed their pose I also added clouds into the background of the sky this
shows that whilst the story had been told the time in the book had been
stretched out longer than the actual story been told
