The largest tropical rainforests are situated near the equator in South
America, Africa and Asia. Hundreds of years ago, rainforests covered 14%
of the Earth’s surface, but today they cover only 6%.

The tropical rainforests are in regions with few changes in climate: it is
warm all year round. Plants and trees grow very quickly in these
conditions and they produce 40% of the world’s oxygen.

Man in continually destroying the forests for wood and farmland. This
deforestation is affecting the world’s climate: about 30% of the carbon
dioxide released into the air comes from burning down rainforests and is
one of the main causes of global warming. If we continue to destroy the

Introducction
Rainforests are the Earth's oldest living ecosystems. These incredible places cover only 6 %of
the Earth's surface but yet they contain MORE THAN 1/2 of the world's plant and animal
species!

A Rainforest can be described as a tall, dense jungle. The reason it is
called a "rain" forest is because of the high amount of rainfall it gets
per year. The climate of a rain forest is very hot and humid so the
animals and plants that exist there must learn to adapt to this
climate

As many as 30 million species of plants and animals live in tropical
rainforests.

At least two-thirds of the world's plant species, including many
exotic and beautiful flowers grow in the rainforests.

Rainforests are the source of many items that we all use in our own
homes!

We eat several foods from the rainforest and many medicines are
made from ingredients found only in these areas.

Some of the common products we know of include:

CENTRAL AMERICA

This region was once entirely covered with rainforest, but large areas have been cleared for
cattle ranching and for sugar cane plantations.

Like other major rainforests, the jungles and mangrove swamps of
Central America contain many plants and animals found nowhere
else. Central America is famous for its large number of tropical
birds, including many kinds of parrots.

THE AMAZON

The Amazon jungle is the world's largest tropical rainforest. The
forest covers the basin of the Amazon, the world's second longest
river.

The Amazon is home to the greatest variety of plants and animals
on Earth. A 1/5 of all the world's plants and birds and about 1/10 of all mammal species are
found there

AFRICA

Central Africa holds the world's second largest rainforest. To the south east, the large island of
Madagascar was once intensively forested, but now much of it is
gone. Africa contains areas of high cloud forest, mangrove
swamps and flooded forests. The island of Madagascar is home
to many unique plants and animals not found anywhere else.

SOUTHERN ASIA

The rainforests of Asia stretch from India and Burma in the west
to Malaysia and the islands of Java and Borneo in the
east. Bangladesh has the largest area of mangrove forests in the
world.

In Southeast Asia the climate is hot and humid all year round. In the mainland ( Asia) it has a
subtropical climate with torrential monsoon rains followed by a drier period.

AUSTRALASIA

Millions of years ago, Australia, New Zealand and the island of New Guinea formed part of a
great forested southern continent, isolated from the rest of the world. Today these countries
contain many different species of animal that live nowhere else.

Undergrowth in Australia's tropical forests is dense and lush. The forests lie in the path of wet
winds blowing in from the Pacific.

RAINFORESTS IN DANGER

The world's rainforests are currently disappearing at a rate of 6000 acres every hour (this is
about 4000 football fields per hour).

 When these forests are cut down, the plants and animals that live in the forests are
destroyed, and some species are at risk of
being made extinct.
 Further, as the large-scale harvesting of
lumber from the rain forests continues,
the balance of the earth's eco-system is
disrupted.
 We need the rain forests to produce
oxygen and clean the atmosphere to help
us breathe
 We also know that the earth's climate can
be affected, as well as the water cycle.
 Rainforests also provide us with many valuable medicinal plants, and may be a source
of a cure from some deadly diseases.

PRESERVING THE EARTH RAINFORESTS

Forests can be managed effectively without endangering rare species of plants and animals
and without risking global environmental damage.

 Companies that harvest timber should not be allowed to "clear cut" large areas of
forest and should be required to plant new
trees after they cut old trees down.
 Governments should create large parks
and reserves where hunting and logging
are not allowed.
 As a world community, we must be careful
not to destroy the resources that people
will need in the future.
 Many animals from the rainforests are
brought to our country illegally. Parrots
and iguanas, for example, are often imported illegally. We should not buy these
animals, since that encourages other people to bring in more animals.
 Most of the products that we use in our country come from rainforests, such as
rubber, coffee and rain forest lumber. Rainforests are cut down to harvest the timber
and also to make room for farms to grow coffee and spices. Each of us needs to be

thoughtful about the way we consume these products, and support companies and
programs that make a commitment to safe environmental practices.
 Recycle and re-use whenever possible, and help keep the earth green and healthy.

Belize is located on the north eastern coast of Central
America, between Mexico and Guatemala. 80% of this
country, Belize, is covered by rainforest, which is
protected by the government.

CLIMATE
The local climate is tropical and generally hot and humid.
The rainy season is from May to November. During this season there are usually
natural disasters like hurricanes and floods. Average temperatures on the coast vary
from 24 degrees Celsius in January and 27 degrees Celsius in July

LOCATION

The Hawaiian tropical rainforest is a tropical moist broadleaved forest region in the
Hawaiian Islands. They cover an area of 6,700 km2 in the windward lowlands and
mountain regions of the islands.

1. WILDLIFE
The Hawaiian Islands are some of the most remote areas of land in the world.
More than 70 million years of isolation have helped create a unique plant life in the
tropical rainforests of Hawaii.

There are four layers in a
tropical rainforest. On the top or the
emergent layer there are the tallest
trees, or the emergent trees. Next,
the canopy shades the forest floor by
blocking out the sun's light. The
understory is made up of shrubs and
young trees and the forest floor is
where the fallen branches and leaves
decompose to create nutrients for
new plant life to grow.
The tropical rainforests of
Hawaii are home to native Ohia'lehua and Koa trees, the latter much prized for its
multi-hued wood patterns.
There are also three varieties of
orchids as well as a number of
mosses and ferns. Red Ginger is
also a common find. The Ohia
tree has its own red blossoms.

2. PEOPLE

Hawaii's current population of over 1.3 million is due to military presence and tourism,
with about 72% of its residents living in metropolitan areas such as Honolulu.

3. DANGER

The rainforest is a biodiversity rich region. It's richer than any other biological
region of our planet. Many species are critically endangered, and all they require our
help to survive.

About one species disappears everyday in a rainforest, although it hasn’t been
discovered yet!

In some rainforest each tree may have its species of wildlife. A tree cutting may
result in the extinction of that specie.

4. MEASURES TO PRESERVE THE RAINFOREST:

- Stop tree cutting for farms, highways or timber companies. .

- Concerned and respectful attitude about the environment.

known species are found in Madagascar,
150.000 of which are endemic.

The Malagasy ethnic group forms over 90%
of Madagascar's population and is divided
into eighteen ethnic sub-groups.

The most famous representative of the
fauna is the lemur. On the island there are
ten different species of lemur.

Recent DNA research revealed that the genetic makeup of the average Malagasy
person constitutes an equal blend of Austronesian and East African genes, although
the genetics of some communities show a predominance of Austronesian or African
origins or some Arab, Indian or European ancestry.

Some of the Malagasy Ethnic Groups are Sakalava, Vezo, Merina and Bara.

Before the arrival of humans 2,000 ago, years there were many great and
unusual animals living there. Many
animals that are endangered or could be
endangered in a short time are:

majungasaurus, elephant birds, pygmy hipp
os and Archaeoindris Malagasy, among
other.

South America is home to the world's largest contiguous tropical rainforest, the
vast Amazon rainforest. This lush and biologically rich forest covers the basin of the
Amazon (also known as Amazonia), the world's second longest river, and spreads into
nine countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam
and French Guiana.

The Amazon basin includes 7,000,000
square kilometers (1.2 billion acres), while the
forest itself, is home to the greatest variety of
plants and animals on Earth. It occupies some
5,500,000 square kilometers.

Wildlife:
One fifth of all the world's plants and birds and almost one tenth of all mammal
species are found there, we can find mammals like the
jaguar, birds, reptiles, amphibians (frogs), fish and
insects. This vast forest home, which represents over
half of the world's remaining rainforests, is under attack
from many fronts and the world is in danger of losing
this precious resource. Deforestation, serving the
interests of both primitive cut down and burn and
modern agriculture, logging and exotic timber harvest
and cattle raising, is the major threat.

The construction of the Trans-Amazonian
highway not only destroyed millions of acres but has
also opened the region up to constant and relentless
pressure from the outside world. At the current rate of
forest loss, it is entirely possible that the Amazon rainforest will cease to exist within
the next 50 years.

People
The Amazon shelters different live cultures. The Amazon has a long history of
human settlement. Contrary to popular belief, sizable and sedentary societies of great
complexity existed in the Amazon rainforest before Columbus arrived there. These
societies produced pottery, cleared sections of
rainforest for agriculture, and managed forests to
optimize the distribution of useful species. The
notion of a virgin Amazon is largely the result of
the population crash following the arrival of the
Europeans in the sixteenth century. Studies
suggest that 11.8 percent of the Amazon's “terra
firme” forests are anthropogenic in nature
resulting from the careful management of biodiversity by indigenous people. However,
unlike those using current cultivation techniques, these Amazonians were attuned to
the ecological realities of their environment, and they understood how to sustainably
manage the rainforest to suit their needs. They saw the importance of maintaining
biodiversity through a mosaic of natural forests, open fields, and sections of forest
managed so as to be dominated by species of special interest to humans.

Tropical rainforests are warm, 24-27º C year round, because they are located near the
equator. Rainforests live up to their name—they receive at least 2,000 mm (80 inches)
of rain every year. While they cover less than seven percent of the Earth’s surface,
rainforests contain about half of the plants and animals species on the planet. The
rainforests of Panama, in particular, are some of the world’s most biologically diverse
areas.
Chagres National Park was created in 1985 with the
objective of preserving the natural forest up to
produce enough water to ensure the normal
operation of the Panama Canal, to supply drinking
water for Panama City, Colon and La Chorrera, and
generate electricity for the cities of Panama and
Colon.

Chagres National Park situated to the east of Gatun
Lake and close to the northern half of Panama Canal.
It has 1,185 species of plants, 130 of which are unique to that area. Panama’s
rainforests are home to many mammals that migrated from both North and South
America. Among these species are jaguars, tapirs, deer, sloths, anteaters, and
armadillos. There are also 650 species of birds and 93 amphibian species in the
Panama Canal watershed.
Some of the endangered animals can be found in
Panama. This is the case of the American Alligator,
the Great Green Macaw, Jaguar, the West Indian
manatee, the brown-headed spider monkey, the
spectacled bear, the white shark, or the loggerhead
turtle.
There are also some endangered plants such as
orchids.

It is the second largest rainforest after the Amazon and it´s the richest place in
biodiversity in Africa. It extends
over Cameroon, Central African
Republic, Congo Bazzaville,
Democratic Republic of Congo,
Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

In the Democratic Republic of
Congo, the forest is home to over
1,000 species of birds, over 400
species of mammals, 10,000 plant
species, many of which are found
nowhere else on Earth.

The forest of the Congo River basin accumulate 8% of
all carbon stored in forests on the planet, making it
the largest carbon store in Africa and the fourth
largest in the world. However, about 85% of the
primary forest has been destroyed and the timber
industry threatens the rest.

According to the latest estimates, deforestation in
central Africa for 2050, only in Democratic Republic of
Congo, will release 34,400 tones of CO2.

Tens of millions of people depend on forests for their
survival and in the Democratic Republic of Congo there
are 40 million people, farmers and fishermen, who
depend on forests. In this part of the world, entire
cultures live and depend on the forest for shelter, health,
food and cultural and spiritual survival.

Indonesia houses the most extensive rainforest in all Asia, though it is rapidly being
destroyed to accommodate its increasing population and growing economy.

WILDLIFE

In Indonesian rainforests there are thought to be as many as 40,000 different species
of plants. Of these, there are around 5,000 different species of orchid alone.
Rainforests are also rich sources of timber. In Indonesia, timbers such as ebony, teak
and sandalwood are cut for use in construction and woodworking.

Indonesia is home to one of the strangest plants ever seen. The Rafflesia arnoldii is the
world's biggest flower. The flower can grow up to a metre wide and can weigh as much
as nine kilograms. It is also known as the 'corpse flower' because it gives off a smell like
rotten meat. The kelapa tree (or coconut palm) is also very common in Indonesia.

Inside the Indonesian rainforest there are animals such as elephants, rhinoceros,
tigers, monkeys, apes, lizards, flying foxes, wallabies, bandicoots and birds. There are
also many sea and water creatures such as giant sea turtles, crocodiles, sea horses,
dolphins and many different kinds of fish.

There are around 1500 different kinds of birds alone in Indonesia. In the Indonesian
part of the island of Borneo, there are 21 different kinds of apes and monkeys. Some
of the most famous endangered Indonesian animals are the Sumatran rhinoceros, the
Javan tiger, orang-utans and komodo dragons.

CLIMATE

The islands of Indonesia sit close to
the equator. This means that the
whole country is located in a tropical
area. While there is variety in the
weather on different Indonesian
islands, in general the climate
throughout Indonesia is hot and
humid.

As a result of its tropical location,
Indonesia does not have four
seasons. Being close to the equator means that the temperature stays very stable,
close to the same all year round. Instead of summer, autumn, winter and spring,
Indonesia has wet and dry seasons.

LOGGING

Today just under half of Indonesia is forested, representing a significant decline in its
original forest cover. Between 1990 and 2005 the country lost more than 28 million
hectares of forest, including 21.7 hectares of virgin forest, and since the 1990s,
deforestation rates of primary forest cover have climbed 26 percent. Today Indonesia's
forests are some of the most threatened on the planet.

It’s a region of the central and northern of America that includes the rainforest of the
Amazon River.

Fauna

-Mammals include monkeys, jaguars, pumas and tapirs. Its water is home to two
species of dolphins: pinks dolphins.

-There are many species of aquatic and terrestrial reptiles: turtles, alligators, crocodiles
and many snakes, including the anaconda.

Flora

20% of the world’s species of plants can be found in the Amazon forest. In the lagoons
along the Amazon River there are flower plants, whose circular leaves reach over a
meter in diameter.

The Amazonic rainforest is home to different tribes:

-LANGUAGES YE O GÊ: after the language Tupi, this is the most widespread in the
Amazon region.

the Amazon, although there are also members of this tribe in central Amazonia.

More ranches are required to graze their cattle pastures.

Cultivation:

It is estimated that at least 10% of land is needed for traditional crop in the Amazon.
Consequently ranches increasingly move inside the Amazon in search of virgin land.

Road Construction:

Since the early 70s more than 9,000 miles of roads have been built in the Amazon
rainforest, endangering not only the natural habitat of plants and animals but also the
very life and survival of native tribes.

Hydroelectric Dams:

The dams have a negative impact on local wildlife, affecting migratory fish as well as
the survival of pink Amazon dolphin, for example.
Its construction threatens the environment and the reproductive cycle of plants and
animals

Mining:

The mining industry practices require releasing tons of mercury on the environment,
causing irreparable damage to waterways, vegetation and animals.
