Read the following text carefully.
Without the Earth we have nowhere to live, along with many other organisms. If we don't save the
Earth now maybe our children or grandchildren might not be able to see it for long. Our atmosphere is
weakening and we have to do something about it fast.
We could plant more trees to create more oxygen to keep the bad air away from the atmosphere, or
we could just stop cutting down the rainforest. We are living and we need the space but we aren't the
only species on this earth. Saving the rainforest is not only good for us and the atmosphere but also
good for the many different species that it homes.
We could try to get as many people as possible to switch to hybrids and other energy saving things
to use less fossil fuel for energy and relying more on solar and wind energy. Fossil fuels are destroying
our earth and we need to limit the use of it.
Recycling is a great and easy way to help our precious planet. Everyone can help, all they have to do
is follow three simple rules; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
The world is precious and we need to keep it that way.
By David M., Westland, MI
A) Using the words form the Word bank, identify the environmental problems the pictures suggest.
Air pollution–ozone layer depletion–endangered species– deforestation– acid rain–floods –global
warming–melting poles–oil spills –

B) WRITE THE WORDS/ PHRASES ABOVE NEXT TO THE RIGHT DEFINITION. USE CAPITAL LETTER
a)RECYCLE- B) RAINFOREST- C) ENERGY- D) AEROSOL SPRAY-E) EXHAUST FUMES-F) ENVIRONMENT-E) PESTICIDE- g)WATER CONTAMINATION
1- Toxic GASES EXPELLED BY CARS.

C) Answer the questions about the text.
1. Who depends on the Earth?-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. What can man do to create more oxygen? -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Who benefits from saving the rainforest? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Which energy sources do we have instead of fossil fuels?------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. How can we help save planet
Earth?----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D) The text refers to some environmental problems and some solutions. Separate from the box below the problems and the
solutions and write them under the correct heading.
F. WRITE AN ESSAY CALLED “THE CAR: DREAM MACHINE OR NIGHTMARE?” IT SHOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING STRUCTURE:
1. Modern society couldn’t exist without the car. (Give some ways in which we depend on cars).
2. In fact, our lives are organized around cars. (Give some ways in which cars determine our lifestyle, cities, etc.).
3. The car brings a lot of benefits. (Give some of the benefits that cars bring).
4. However, we pay a heavy price for these benefits. (Give some of the disadvantages of cars).
5. As more and more people get cars, the problems will increase, so we must change our attitude towards cars. (Give
some ways in which we can reduce the problems that cars cause). “ Homework”.
endangered species – ozone layer destruction – reduce – deforestation – hurricanes – save – global warming ––
