The document outlines steps for career planning presented by Susan McKenzie at the Grace Hopper Celebration 2018. It discusses identifying career options, prioritizing factors, setting goals, gaining experience, self-evaluation through journaling, narrowing options by speaking with people in fields of interest, creating a career plan, and reiterates that career planning requires flexibility. The overall message is that effective career planning involves reflection, exploration, decision-making, and adapting goals based on learning.

Distributed Teams - Hello? Can anyone hear me?Growing Agile
In the ideal perfect world there will be rainbows and unicorns and teams that all sit together. In reality, most teams have to deal with distribution in one form or another. For some: it’s team members spread across a building, for others it’s team members in other parts of the world in different time zones.
Have you even been on a call where you can hear someone ordering coffee, or a dog barking? My favorite is being told someone is joining the call, after you've spent 5 minutes explaining something in detail. Mostly distributed meetings are boring, and not really worth the time and effort.
As agile coaches we truly value face to face communication and visible boards and sticky-notes, we also value working from anywhere, having pets in the office and not having to travel. So what is possible here? We decided to fully immerse ourselves into the distributed world and see what happened. We were amazed - we managed to build trust, explore and discover great collaborative tools and we improved communication.
We would like to share some of our discoveries and tips with you. Join us to explore how agile can work for distributed teams.
This presentation was put together by Rachel Toburen for WordCamp Denver 2015.

Getting the attention of someone that’s never heard of your brand before gets more and more difficult every year. Securing influential advocates to link and share is critical to both top of funnel awareness and conversion-driving trust. But counting on free samples and demos won’t be enough to entice influencers to shout your praises. You are going to have to market the value of a business partnership to them just like you are marketing your product/service to your customers.
Are you struggling to integrate User Experience techniques with your agile teams? Are any of these patterns familiar?
The UX team works one sprint ahead of the development team.
UX designers spend lots of energy on high fidelity mock-ups which the developers then ignore.
You produce working software each sprint, but recruiting users is time consuming so you only test with users before you release.
There is no time to incorporate changes from user feedback into the sprints before release.
The UX designers and the developers seem to speak a different language.
Developers get annoyed because the UX design work great on iOS, but clashes with Android standards.
If so join us for a fun interactive session where we use Lego to explore how you can overcome challenges like this in your own environment. You’ll work as a team doing both UX design, and development (with Lego), and see how and why these patterns happen, as well as what you can do about them.
This workshop is ideal for people from both the UX world, struggling to understand how to work with developers, and for developers struggling to understand what UX designers are trying to achieve.

Recent advances in Machine Learning, have created powerful algorithms, pushing the boundaries of Artificial Intelligence (AI). As machine learning becomes increasingly prevalent, one biggest issue it needs to addressing is bias that seeps into AI. This presentation focuses on bias in AI algorithms, provides a range of examples where AI is racist or sexist. We explore causes like biased data, lack of attention to the inputs, and insufficient understanding of the algorithm. Finally, we propose steps which could help reduce these incidences of discrimination.
GHC17 workshop material on consciously tackling unconscious bias. After introduction on what bias is and how it can affect you, we took Implicit Association Test (IAT) on gender-science at each table. We then shared our findings as a group and opened the floor for questions.

Is it possible for a computer program to write its own programs? While this kind of idea could seem far-fetched, it may actually be closer than we think. This presentation introduces "AI Programmer", a machine learning system, which can automatically generate full software programs requiring only minimal human guidance. The system uses genetic algorithms coupled with a tightly constrained programming language. We’ll cover an overview of the system design and see examples of its software-generation capabilities. #GHC18

I HAVE A PLAN!
We were all asked this when we were kids.
So, What was your answer?
mine was a Math Teacher and then someday a Professor of Mathematics.
When did that change?
Do people really know what they want to be?
Do you have to set goals when you are young?
Do those goals change over time?
You can google that question and quickly get many sites that offer advice.
Here are a few that stuck out to me and some notes from them.
MIT’s Career Planing site
1 - examine your interests, skills, values
2 - what is most important
3 - compare promising options
4 - is this field in demand, can I make money?
5 - choose the one best for you
6 - Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time bound
7 - create specific steps to get there
8 - meet with someone who can help you
Craven Community College Career planing site
many colleges have similar sites with basically the same steps.
Article from theguardian.com
Think about where you’re going and then communicate
Find advocates
Challenge yourself, but remain authentic
build confidence
Let go of perfectionism
we need to create opportunities to learn X and gain experience in Y to get to position Z
over most of my life this is how I felt about my career
sometimes it seemed that nothing went as I planned.
Then, a couple of friends and I read this book. That’s when the light bulb came on.
So how do you plan your career/life?
First of all you don’t have to do it by yourself. It’s ok to ask for help
First, figure out what things in your life you can’t control
Health Issues for example (like knee surgery)
What things can I control?
Focus on the things you can control
Your choices, for example
Write down what you do each day and make note:
Why are you doing the things you are doing?
What makes it worthwhile?
What gives you energy?
What do you look forward to?
What drains you?
What activities do you loathe?
Where can you find these people?
Ask people you are already acquainted with what they do
Attend a new meet up
ask people here at the conference
Why do they do what they do?
What does the job really involve?
What do they like?
What do they hate?
Why do they do what they do?
What does the job really involve?
What do they like?
What do they hate?
At least once a year do this all over again
Do it more often if you become unhappy
What do you want out of life?
At least once a year do this all over again
Do it more often if you become unhappy
What do you want out of life?
