Expanding eMarking Trial - Liz Heathcote and Tanya Kappler, the University of...Blackboard APAC
This session reports on a trial designed to expand the adoption of e-marking, and reduce the cost and waste associated with printing assignments at the University of Adelaide. 30 iPads were purchased and pre-loaded with eMarking software to enable participants to trial e-marking in a supportive environment. The recipients were trained in using iPads and mobile e-marking apps, together with the MyUni assignment functions, to build their confidence un using technology for marking. The session will outline the learnings from the trial and factors contributing towards its success in convincing more than the originally intended participants to try paperless marking, and consider the impact and benefits of marking online versus printing. It will discuss the 'Dissemination for Action' model used within the project to bring about a change of marking practice across a wide variety of academic disciplines.
Delivered at Innovate and Educate: Teaching and Learning Conference by Blackboard. 24 -27 August 2015 in Adelaide, Australia.

This bachelor's thesis explores dierent deep learning techniques to solve the Visual Question-Answering (VQA) task, whose aim is to answer questions about images. We study dierent Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to extract the visual representation from images: Kernelized-CNN (KCNN), VGG-16 and Residual Networks (ResNet). We also analyze the impact of using pre-computed word embeddings trained in large datasets (GloVe embeddings). Moreover, we examine dierent techniques of joining representations from dierent modalities. This work has been submitted to the second edition Visual Question Answering Challenge, and obtained a 43.48% of accuracy.

Simulation modelling of the effect of a random disturbance on biodiversity of...IJAEMSJORNAL
The effect of a random disturbance on the ecosystem is one of the oldest scientific observations of which its effect on biodiversity is no exception. We have used ODE 45 numerical scheme to tackle this problem. The novel results that we have obtained have not been seen elsewhere; these are presented and fully discussed quantitatively.
214 - Sampling Improvement in Software Engineering SurveysESEM 2014
Context: Small and non-probabilistic samples represent relevant issues when discussing the external validity of empirical studies in Software Engineering. Goal: To investigate alternatives to improve the quality of samples (size, heterogeneity and level of confidence). Method: To replicate a survey on characteristics of agility in software processes by applying a systematic recruitment strategy over a professional social network. Results: It resulted in a sampling frame composed by 19 groups stratified according two perspectives: sharing of groups' members and main software engineering skills reported by the subjects. In total, 7,745 subjects were randomly recruited, resulting in 291 contributions. Conclusions: This sample was significantly larger, more heterogeneous and presents some strata with higher confidence levels than previous trials samples.

We say "mooin": MOOC Making Stories from LuebeckAnja Lorenz
Webinar at eduhub.ch at May 26, 2016 https://www.eduhub.ch/events/webinars/mooin/
In March 2015, the Luebeck University of Applied Sciences started its own MOOC platform "mooin" (https://mooin.oncampus.de/). In 160 days of development, we made Moodle look sexy and thus suitable for MOOCs. One year and eight MOOCs later, we learned a lot on MOOC making from technical, pedagogical and organizational perspectives. And we decided to make MOOCs not only on academic topics that should replace in-class lectures. We mainly experimented with topics out of the academic focus: We made MOOCs on the Hanseatic League, video making, social web, enterprise learning, 25 years on German reunion or German pronunciation. And there is much more on our roadmap.
In the webinar, we will give you a short introduction to MOOCs and their special characteristics, show you how we support those in mooin, and give you some insights in our courses and work.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
