Introduction to the Trust
• Leading Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence.
• A specialist hospital providing a comprehensive range of musculoskeletal, surgical, medical and
rehabilitation services.
• Located in Oswestry – a small town in Shropshire
near the Welsh Border.
• My placement was within the Research department.

My Role
• I worked as a Study Support Officer, and was later appointed Clinical Trial Coordinator by the DMD
Hub.
• This included day to day management of clinical trials – including data entry, responding to queries,
setting up appointments and frequent meetings.
• I worked 4 days a week.
•Within a team of clinical and non-clinical staff to deliver over 60 trials across many directories.

Studies I Worked On
• SMA Reach – looking at improving the standards of care and translational research for Spinal Muscular
Atrophy.
• Italfarmaco Extension – a long-term safety, tolerability and efficacy study on a Givinostat Drug given to
boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
• SIREN – A COVID-19 study looking at SARS-COV2 immunity and reinfection in healthcare workers.
• Wright Medical – A foot & ankle observational study to demonstrate the safety and performance of
Wright Medical Products after implantation.
• Rare Diseases – A study looking at the number of genes considered to be modifiers for Duchenne
Muscular Dystrophy.

The DMD Hub
• The DMD Hub is a network of trial sites with trained staff funded to carry out
clinical trials specifically for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
• In May, I was successful in obtaining a Coordinators role, funded by the DMD
Hub.
• My role was to work alongside pharmaceutical companies, sponsors and
families to deliver studies for children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
• I also attended gene therapy workshops and training sessions as part of the
role.

Skills I Gained and Enhanced
• Communication – including my written and spoken communication to patients, colleagues and health
professionals.
• Team working skills – enhanced through working with multidisciplinary teams
• Working independently and unsupervised
• Specific research skills – Good Clinical Practice, ethics, confidentiality acts, financing and forecasting,
funding applications
• Organisation and time management
• Infection guidelines – including added COVID-19 infection control
• Massively improved my confidence
