Photoshop uses layers like transparencies stacked on top of each other. Layers higher in the layer list are visually closer to the front. You can turn layers on and off by clicking the eye icon next to the layer, similar to turning lights on and off, to see how your image will look with different layer combinations. The document then recommends learning about Photoshop's selection tools by watching demonstrations and completing an assignment.

If a layer is on top then a
layer is on top. The further
you move the layer down
the list, the closer it comes
to the bottom.
To see what your end
product will look like, you
can turn off layers like
lights, and turn them back
on again when you are
ready. To do so click the eye
to the left of the layer box.
