• Polly Jean Harvey is a British artist raised in Somerset.
• Wikipedia states that PJ Harvey “has cultivated a reputation for eccentricity
to match her music” and disclaims the idea that her music is
autobiographical.
• She has been described as a "blues-rock sorceress trafficking in social
politics and dark, tormented songwriting."
• PJ Harvey also belongs to other genres such as experimental rock, art rock
and piano rock.
• PJ Harvey carries a very dark and punk like image. She is known for
changing her style from album to album to fit with music videos and live
performance. She shows independence and control.
• Harvey’s fashion style consists of dark colours, leather and revealing
clothing. Her fashion sense will appeal to men more than women as she is
representing a ‘sexy’ side to femininity. However her fashion sense can be
compared with that of Siouxsie Sioux and other punk rock artists, this
aspect of her image will appeal to women of an older age.
• The way in which an artist is photographed also shows a lot about who
they are and what genre they represent. PJ Harvey carries across her rock
‘n’ roll image in her photos by posing in a ‘slouch like’ manner and with
things such as cigarettes. This is important when appealing to the desired
target audience because a lot of first impressions are made on the first
images that people see.
How do they appeal to their
audiences?
• PJ Harvey is aged 41. This leads to her also drawing in an older audience
because of the maturity of her lyrics and music. Interviews also portray this.
She speaks in a very collective manner, explaining in depth to her audience
about her album. This can even be seen in interviews as early as 1995. The
clothes that she wears in these interviews also expresses this, she does not
exploit herself in a way which can be seen in her music videos and photos.
• In her video ‘Good Fortune’ Harvey addresses each of her audiences.
Whilst dressing in an outfit that is seen amongst her age range, her ‘sexy’
character is also addressed by the dress being cut very low as well as her
legs being bare. Her more immature side that could be concerned with her
rock aspect is seen when she is walking down the road and she begins to
dance and swing her bag around – almost in a stage like manner usually
seen with a guitar.
• Something very unusual about PJ Harvey is her quirkiness, this is
something that helps to attract her audience as this is a big factor in her
personality. This can immediately be seen in her video ‘Shame’ where it is
very difficult to work out what is being presented. However this is
something that people admire.
• An artists website must also appeal to the desired audience. PJ Harvey’s is
very easy to understand with the different categories listed at the top and
various pictures displayed underneath it. For the older generation that may
not necessarily understand the internet as well, the website is laid out in a
way that is suitable for them.
• PJ Harvey’s individuality is also presented on her CD covers. They each
portray her in a manner that shows control and power because of the eye
contact that is made with the camera on a few of the covers. Awkwardness
is also seen in the way that she poses. The poses are something that is not
usually done by other artists.
• A factor that is immediately shown in the way PJ Harvey addresses issues
in her interviews is the depth in which she goes when explaining her work.
This helps the audience to understand the mind behind the music, they may
be able to relate to it more as they know more detail behind the meaning of
the lyrics.
• Harvey’s website also holds many options that lets the audience physically
interact with her. With a community option so that members can express
views, opinions and discuss the work of the artist. Like many artists, PJ
Harvey shows an option to buy her merchandise. Fans that own band
merchandise feel a connection with the band as they almost ‘wear’ the
passion that they have for their music. A news option also helps the
audience become fully aware of what the artist is doing and what can be
expected from them next. Photos on the website also help this as they show
the progress in which the band are making.
How do they interact with their
audiences?
I have learnt:
o The age range is something that also needs to be taken into
consideration.
o Uniqueness in an artist is something that is praised and appeals to
many audiences.
o The way in which the artist is photographed holds a lot of
importance in how they are judged and what first impressions are
made.
o When music holds a lot of depth, it must be addressed in a way that
that the audience will understand as the lyrics is something that the
audience relate to and find interesting in an artist.
What can you learn from this artist about how to
appeal to the audience?
Thank you for watching.
