Villain's Journey: Maleficent (2014) vs Thanos (2018)Jade-Leigh Berry
Within this slide show, I will be studying this very topic and how it’s developed over the years within culture and media, inside of the scope of two case studies. The two main villains I will be looking at are Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty” and the 2014 adaption retelling her story and Thanos from “Avengers: Infinity War” 2018 adaption among other retellings for the former and latter. I chose these main two as “The Villain’s Journey” is best portrayed by their storylines and deeds throughout their creation as characters, as it runs parallel to other theories, such as “The Hero’s Journey” for example, as they are both hero’s that instead of going through the troubles and advancing, stuck with them and developed in the opposite direction. This, in turn, allows me to create a hypothesis the very formula I’ve mentioned, to making and breaking into the “Villain” mould and explore the complexity of today’s version of an “Evildoer”.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. PLOT
The lead protagonist (Isaac White) is a graduate from university who studied in the controversial field of
parapsychology. Throughout his academic career he was mocked about his line of work.
Despite a degree in this subject he has yet to discover a definite case to prove the existence of the afterlife
and the paranormal. Tired of the mockery and scepticism he seeks to find a case study that will prove it all.
After deep research he finally finds a possible lead. But he cannot go it alone, in need of assistance he
recruits the help of a lifelong friend, William Cross. The case in point is at the farm house residence of an
elderly lady named Miss Absinthe. She wants the spirit of a young girl named Tabitha Rosemary to be
banished from the property she has been terrorising for decades. With the belief that this is the case that will
silence the critics they take the chance and attempt to document their findings.
After the first day of research they make contact with this spirt but she is not cooperative and briefly
possesses the assistant, asking the intruders to leave or she will make them leave by force. Undeterred by
this prospect they continue. The surrounding maze fields are said to be roamed by the spirit at night. The
obvious next step was to investigate this. During filming his assistant is taken by Tabitha, deep into the maze.
Consumed by selfishness he continues his research despite the loss of his friend. It is clear the past events
have impacted on his sanity. Over the period of a week Isaac’s mental state deteriorates. As a last hope he
confronts the ghost in the hope of banishing the spirit with ancient voodoo. The final scene is many years in
the future the now elderly Isaac sits where the woman once sat years before talking to a man who claims he
can force the spirt of the young girl to leave the premises.
3. THE CHARACTERS
Isaac White- The lead protagonist, he is resourceful and driven. He becomes obsessed with the case, to the
extent he would lose his friend to gain evidence. His metal collapse is obvious throughout the trailer.
William Cross- He is the assistant. Cross is very loyal, William acts as the cameraman trying to document their
findings. He is dragged into the maze field by the spirit. His demise is a key event to the reversal of roles in the
film.
Miss Absinthe- She is the helpless old woman, she displays an unnerving persona. She is also the character that
requested the help of white and cross.
Tabitha Rosemary- The main antagonist in this trailer, she is the spirit of a young girl who terrorises the
property and has a habit of not letting and any intruders leave the premises.
4. CONVENTIONS OF THE TRAILER
The following plot follows horror conventions in a number of ways. To start with, the setting
is very isolated. This gives the idea that the protagonists are vulnerable and alone. The
locations are also rural this is the most popular location to film a horror movie according to
the genre research.
The characters are represented as conventional. The old woman is represented as weak and
incapable this is a typical representation of this gender and age in horror films. The male
leads are represented as powerful, commanding and intelligent. On the other hand this
convention is shaken when the assistant (male) is killed by the spirit. Once this happens the
dominance is turned and the male lead is shown as unstable and helpless. This reverse
causes the female lead to go from hunted and scared to a feared force in the film. This shift
in power could be considered unconventional. Using the a girl as an antagonist is not
uncommon It Is seen in films like “The Exorcist”
The narrative is conventional. The incorporation of a spirit is typical in the paranormal horror
subgenre. However the plot of this film is unconventional because there is no protagonist
“left standing” The antagonist overwhelms the protagonists despite their best efforts.
Having said this, it could be considered unconventional because compared to the film
“Scream” the female lead character is the only one who survives. The idea of the evil
characters becoming victorious is not completely new, it can be seen in “Cabin in the
Woods” and Final Destination”. In both of these films all good characters are vanquished.
5. TARGET AUDIENCE APPEAL
The plot will appeal to the target audience because it has an unexpected twist making the film less predictable, this
is in response to the answers from my focus group. The plot gives the trailer a chance to have some fast paced
editing. This will help to make the trailer more thrilling. And follow convention. Once again this was a request in my
audience feedback. The location that will be used for filming are ideal. Some give the idea of tension and
claustrophobia for example the maze field. With this and other locations I should be able to create a terrifying
atmosphere. This is one of the elements that my target audience will like. The characters will be appealing to the
target audience because they should be able to make a better connection with the viewer as they are of a similar
age. From the audience feedback I also know that jump scares are effective when used sparingly. I will be
incorporating this technique in my own trailer.
6. UNIVERSAL STUDIOS
Universal studios is a subsidiary of the parent company Comcast. Universal studios is the division of the
conglomerate that I will pitch my production concepts to. Comcast is a world leader in telecommunications and
mass media production.
History
The subsidiary universal studios was founded in 1912 and its most prominent work is in motion pictures. This
company is famed for bringing the horror monsters to film, that we now see a generic icons of the genre. This was
done with films like Frankenstein, Dracula and The Mummy.
Subsidiaries
Its subsidiaries include Comcast Cable (television), Comcast Interactive Media (online media), Comcast Spectator
(sports management) and NBC Universal; this subsidiary owns Universal Studios, as well as their own television
departments and theme parks.
7. KEY FINDINGS
• The audience want a rural setting.
• The trailer should not give much away.
• The paranormal theme is most popular with my audience
• The target audience is aged 15 to 25 horror is most appealing to this age range.
• The build and release of tension is one of the most important effects to making an appealing horror trailer.
• The pace of the editing has to quicken towards the back end of the trailer.
• The trailer must have a length between 2:30 to 3:30 minutes.
