Dalton's atomic theory proposed that all matter was
composed of atoms, indivisible and indestructible building
blocks
J.J. Thomson’s model: Plum Pudding model
Thomson’s atomic model propose that An atom consists of
a positively charged sphere with electrons embedded in it
and an atom as a whole is electrically neutral
Rutherford Atomic Model propose that
positively charged particles are in the nucleus
While negatively charged electrons orbit the
Nucleus, both nucleus and electron are held by
together by a strong electrostatic force of
attraction.
Bohr’s atomic model;
-proton and neutron are found in nucleus
-electrons orbit nucleus in various shell
-everything else is empty space.
“Electron Cloud Model” consisted of a dense nucleus
surrounded by a cloud of electrons at various levels in
orbitals.
● Dalton's atomic model describes a single unit of indivisible atom while the quantum
model consists of a dense cloud of electrons around the nucleus.
● Thomson’s atomic model describes an atom as a proton with an embedded electron on it
while the quantum model has a nucleus on the center with a cloud of electrons around it.
● Rutherford Atomic Model describes an atom as an electron orbiting on a nucleus that is
composed of a neutron and proton on it while the quantum model has an electron cloud
around the nucleus. But the electron cloud is just a probability of finding an electron.
● Bohr’s atomic model describes an atom as having several electron shells with nucleus
on the center while the quantum model has a steady cloud of electrons but this cloud of
electrons is not even an electron by itself but a probability of finding an electron on it with
a nucleus on the center.

➢ Dalton's atomic model does not account for subatomic particles, isotopes, isobars,
allotropes and elements need not combine in simple, whole-number ratios to form
compounds
➢ Thomson’s atomic model failed to explain how the positive charge holds on the electrons
inside the atom. It also failed to explain an atom’s stability. The theory did not mention
anything about the nucleus of an atom.It was unable to explain the scattering experiment
of Rutherford.
➢ Rutherford’s model was unable to explain the stability of an atom. According to
Rutherford’s postulate, electrons revolve at a very high speed around a nucleus of an
atom in a fixed orbit. However, Maxwell explained accelerated charged particles release
electromagnetic radiation. Therefore, electrons revolving around the nucleus will release
electromagnetic radiation.
➢ Bohr’s atomic model violated the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. This model
considers electrons to have both a known orbit and radius i.e. known momentum and
position at the same time, which is impossible according to Heisenberg.this theory was
unable to explain the splitting of spectral lines in the presence of magnetic field (Zeeman
effect ),this was also unable to explain the splitting of spectral lines in the presence of
electric field (stark effect)
