PISCES is a Hawaii state-funded aerospace center that aims to position Hawaii as a leader in space exploration. Through workforce development, outreach, education, and applied research initiatives, PISCES provides hands-on experience to Hawaii students and engineers. Notable programs include internships with companies, a student research program called STARS, and research into producing durable construction materials from Hawaiian basalts that could be used for future space infrastructure and have economic benefits for Hawaii. The basalt materials research has shown promising results for strength and durability with relatively low energy requirements and environmental impact.
