An Undesigned World
Jason Ulaszek
More and more, designers are being asked to help businesses make important decisions. Our ability to connect the disconnected and see the unseen is increasingly valuable in generating new opportunities and boosting commercial value. In part, the growth of the design industry’s value is being driven by businesses realizing that every great experience is designed - we’re helping render the intent of the next great phone, killer mobile app or customer service interaction into reality. At times, it feels we’re spending an exorbitant amount of energy and resources to design for the next greatest “thing”. While we admirably practice our craft on these design challenges for business, we must also recognize the rest of the undesigned world before us. Why are we allowing so many social systems’ experiences to exist ineffectively or even excruciatingly painful? As designers, we owe ourselves the opportunity to fall in love with these problems and mold a response into something better for ourselves, family and friends, neighbors and community. We must be more human-centered, not simply follow a human-centered methodology. It's time we leverage more of our skill for an even higher purpose: solving the world's most pressing social challenges. This talk examines the unique value and power of designers and design thinkers to impact social change. It will provide case studies, current examples and inspiration for designers aspiring to leave a bigger imprint on society.

Design sistemico: implicazioni etiche e socio-comportamentali della progettazione e dell’architettura dell’informazione
Clementina Gentile

Keynote presentation delivered on November 12, 2016 at the 10th Italian Information Architecture Summit in Rome, Italy.
Description of the talk:
https://jarango.com/2016/11/22/leaving-your-mark/
You’ve worked hard on the information architecture models you’ve created but haven’t been able to sell them to the client, or your co-workers. Maybe the conversation around the IA has broken down into an unhealthy debate over semantics. In another scenario, you are tasked with creating a controlled vocabulary for a large organization that has a silo mentality and a lot of legacy content. Where to begin?
These scenarios will sound familiar to most user experience professionals. In this deck, I share my techniques for getting an organization that may have different ideas about how to organize and name content to agree upon a controlled vocabulary.
I also share specific tools in the form of diagrams, beyond the ubiquitous sitemap and wireframe, which communicate complex ideas. And techniques for practicing information architecture with clients collaboratively.
In a world where everything is getting more complex and we are all experiencing personal information overload, there is a growing need to understand the tools and processes that are used to make sense of complex subjects and situations. These tools aren't hard to learn or even tough to implement but they are also not part of many people's education.
Information Architecture is a practice of making sense. A set of principles, lessons and tools to help anyone make sense of any thing. Whether you are - a student or professional, a designer, technologist or small business owner, an intern or executive - learn how information architecture can help you make sense of your next endeavor.

Use of image editors for creating web design mockups has worked until now, but responsive design is forcing us to find alternatives, as we can't simply create more mockups as we design for more screens. Have no fear, there is at least one method of replacing Photoshop for web design. Let's take a look at one of the most important aspects of this method: the creation of clear, semi-automated, self-updating style guides.

Tools for Uncovering Arrangement and MeaningMichael Adcock
If we don’t understand the data, information, and content we’re working with, how can we attempt to explain it to others? Worse yet, how can we (and they) make informed decisions based on it if none of us really understands? I’ve spent the past year and a half finding and experimenting with tools to help solve some gnarly enterprise information architecture problems. I was immersed in a world of information that is often duplicated, stale, or untrustworthy, and I was asked to make sense of it. Traditional IA tools couldn’t provide the answers. I wasn’t trying to design a website or app, or produce a deliverable for its own sake — I was trying to understand the information piling up around me, and help others make decisions based on it.
Using my own work as an example, I’ll help you answer and explore questions like:
- Should we choose our tools not for what they produce, but for what we can learn from them?
- Where can we even start when we’ve got a large amount of data to figure out?
- What can we learn by playing with information and transforming it in different ways?
- How might we better understand the scope, limits, relationships, patterns, and structures in our information?
Finding useful tools can be difficult, and they can be found in unlikely places. We’ll look at several uncommon tools that have been valuable in my own work, including Gephi, Google Refine, and Tiddlywiki. I’ll share my successes and failures and discuss how I’ve learned to evaluate these tools. If they are unfamiliar, I’ll show you enough to get started using them immediately. After brief overviews and basic examples, you’ll be armed with ways to improve your own work, and new directions to explore!
When approached with a question, librarians create context for understanding using communication skills and their ability to navigate available resources. IAs can do a similar thing for co-workers inside an organization.
Using my ongoing experience in Special Projects, we’ll look at how IA tools, processes, and thinking can be used to solve support and maintenance issues in an organization. I’ve worked with people in different product groups and roles, including those with direct customer interaction, developers, testers, and various levels of management. I’ve helped them see connections between existing products and technologies, design a complex future product as part of a “task force”, and generally answer (and be able to ask!) all sorts of questions.
Along the way, I’ve discovered and added various tools to my bag of tricks. We’ll take a look at these unexpected tools and how they can be used to explore certain types of information problems.
