Our design problem was the storage of medicine along with back-up dosages, literature and equipment required by law, with consideration also given to accessibility and safety requirements.
The solution was designed, built at full scale and installed during the last seven weeks of our first-year studio. This was a collaborative project with Ryan Cho.

Storage Solution for Medicine Distribution Room
1. storage, lack of0.
problem
Our site was the
medicine distribution
room in a specialized
residence for previously chronically
homeless individuals with a history of mental
.illness or individuals living with hiv/aids.
Each resident requires a series of medications,
administered multiple times a day and must
visit the room to receive them.
The medicine distribution area is an old
“summer room” - small, octagonal and all
windows. The medicine needed to be stored in
a light tight and secure method.
Our design problem was the storage of
medicine along with the back-up dosages,
literature and equipment required by law, with
consideration also given to accessibility and
safety requirements.
The solution was designed, built at full scale
and installed during the last seven weeks of our
first-yearstudio. Thiswasacollaborativeproject
with Ryan Cho.
Our client was Pine Street Inn, a non-profit
organization in Boston, Massachusetts. Since
1984,theyhavedevelopedover30sitesoffering
permanent supportive housing for homeless
individuals and families.
2. brainstorm1.
design
A series of investigations
seeking space for 22,500
cubic inches of light
sensitive medicine in a
room lacking walls and
darkness.
Considerations included:
an island densely packed
with drawers, door and
window inserts that infill
existing openings, a
storage shelf that screens
light and privacy, and
extrusion of the existing
millwork - pulling a
volume from a plane.
