Creative Connects Young Writer’s Workshop: Coach April Whittington
Writing is Art
Writing is Art
Forming sentences with words used to create a vision ignites thoughts. Something
you are trying to envision; whether it is what you’re going to do, the thoughts in
reaction to something you know or a thought about not having any thoughts at all, it
never stops and your brain is always working. Words are formed with letters that
are just various shaped lines. Words are the most important part of communication,
written and verbal.
A four (4) year-old might not know the exact stroke to make a legible letter of the
alphabet according to what society says is a legible letter but who’s to say that four
(4) year-old didn’t write a specific letter and truly write a sentence that simply
mimics their thoughts? They know how to talk which documents the fact that they
even have thoughts. If a four (4) year-old is in the presence of other young writers
for two (2) years, when they do start forming understandable letters, they will be
used to the vibe of being a writer because of all the other brilliant and creative
minds they have had an opportunity to engage with.
All human beings are writers. You start writing when you realize you’re awake for
the day. Your thoughts that are not spoken are immediately created when you start
thinking. If there were a machine that could take every thought you’ve had since you
woke up, you would have enough words to publish a book. It’s that simple, you can’t
help but form sentences with words and that’s all “writing” is.
Without the ability to use words, humanity would never grow. Instructions for
things, stories, job applications (pre-printed and what the applicant writes), stories,
packaging and you can’t take medicine without reading the written instructions;
‘written’ which means somebody had to write it. Who could that be? A writer.
So there is a huge importance for Creative Connects Young Writer’s Workshop.
Creativity is ready to be unleashed; I’m simply here to share my passion with young
minds that need to be understood. It’s time to embrace the love for something we
need and should have more respect for. Painters are Visual Artist. Musicians and
Dancers are Performing Artists. Writers are Literary Artists.
Literary: Concerning the writing, studying or content of literature, especially of the
kind valued for quality of form.
Literary (of language): Associated with literary works or other formal writing;
having a marked style intended to create a particular emotional effect. (Sounds like
art to me)
Creative Connects Young Writer’s Workshop: Coach April Whittington
Writing is Art
Everything we read causes a spark in our brains because we have to process the
word AND the context in which to use that word in a milli-second.
The same words you use to form sentences when you speak are the exact same
words you have the opportunity to choose from when you write. The only difference
between verbal sentences and written sentences is the action of speaking versus
reading. The same word pool to choose from; what’s the big deal? The big deal is
that there is no big deal made about the need for more focus on writing as an art.
This isn’t a magical potion, I’m just sharing my point of view because I once was an 8
year-old writer who won a writing contest but had no clue how big my purpose to
create brighter pictures truly was.
Children are against anything that reminds them of school. They have certain
passions so some subjects won’t put a bad taste in their mouth but almost all the
children I talked with stated that they hate writing and English is horrible. I asked
them about Literary Art and they all frowned and gave me the same reaction-
Literary Art: Horrible
Literary Art: Boring
Literary Art: Graded work
I asked certain questions and broke down what writing really is. I let them all know
that by forming the same sentences that are in their head on paper, it’s just
transferring space. No big deal. Every kid I have spoken to for less than five (5)
minutes had a different more exciting view about writing once I enlightened him or
her. They wanted to write immediately. They wanted to use their words and create
vivid pictures. I simply encouraged them to be who they are through words.
So see how everyone is a writer? Now that we have established the reality about
writing as a necessity we have to turn our attention to the individual who uses
writing as a survival tool but they also have names, places, random trees they can
feel with their mind as the breeze blows through the leaves. When you have a
Creative Writer, that title says it all. The definition for ‘literary’ says: to create a
particular emotional effect. A person who can create a story is creative because of
their ability to use words and form a clear view of what they want the reader to
know.
As the Head Coach of Creative Connects Young Writer’s Workshop, I am simply
going to coach, guide, support and uplift these young writers. I’m going to show
them how to respect writing and appreciate having the ability to be creative with
their expanded vocabulary and unique ability to create whatever pictures they want
with whatever words they choose. These young writers will be able to discover the
art they are supposed to share with the world.

Writing is Art
Art is always based on an individual’s perception and there’s nothing weird about
having pictures in your head. There is nothing but pure genius in knowing how to
bring words to life with a profound energy simply because you are capable of
arranging words so they give a clear picture of exactly what you’re thinking.
One of the hardest things to do in life is start and as Creative Connects Young
Writer’s Workshop is able to encourage their passion, they’ll discover that they
started a long time ago and didn’t know it. We want all young writers to let their
voice flow through their pen. Words are free, we should all use them as much as we
want.
