PIET MONDRIAN (1872-1944)
-He was a Dutch painter often referred to as
one of the greatest painters of the 20th Century
-In the 20th Century he was one of the painters
who introduced “Abstract Art”
-He believed that art did not have to portray or
look like reality, he felt like this art could be
more spiritual
-His art always remained rooted in nature
REALISM
Although he is best known for his abstract paintings made from squares and rectangles,
Piet Mondrian started out painting realistic scenes. He especially liked painting trees.

In 1911, Mondrian decided to limit his art vocabulary to 3 primary colors (red,
yellow and blue), 3 values (black, white and gray) and two primary directions
(horizontal and vertical).
NEOPLASTICISM
He called this new style of painting,
Neoplasticism “pure plastic art”
His new style of painting not only
influenced painting but also could be seen
in design, architecture and fashion.
Many people referred to Mondrian as
“Modernism” -- “the face of Modern art”.
ART AND INFLUENCE
His new art form had a lot influence on fashion, during this time.
Mondrian dresses by Yves Saint Laurent shown with a Mondrian painting in 1966.
