particular passages vacillates and shifts as one reads them again and again. So try—

Objects falling through the atmosphere will experience drag forces. In this exercise, you will
discover why smoke and ash take a long time to settle, why clouds seem to float, why rain falls,
etc. In this exercise, we will use the drag model and assume spherical particles so CD = 0.47. The
density of air is 1.2kg/m3, approximately.
A) The diameter of a typical rain drop is on the order of 0.5mm to 8.0mm. Use the drag model
to find out how long for a drop of water to fall 1 meter in the sky. The density of water is about
1.00g/cc (hint: compute the terminal velocity and use it to find out the time to fall 1 meter. Do
this for 0.5mm, 1.0mm, 2.0mm)
B) When there’s a forest fire or a volcano erupts, a lot of small particles are thrusted into the
atmosphere. These particles will reach terminal velocity rapidly and there are several categories.
They are denoted as PM50, PM2.5, etc. The number after PM is the particle size in micrometers.
PM2.5 means 2.5 micrometers or smaller. This is a dangerous category and can make people sick.
Compute the time it takes for these particles to fall from an initial height of about 9km. The range
of densities of the lighter particles is from 0.7g/cc to 2.45g/cc.
C) When a nuclear weapon detonates, the particles generated in the fall out can be as small as
10nm. How long will a sphere of Iodine-131 of diameter 10 nm, 100 nm, 1.0 micron, 20 microns
stay in the air if the "air burst" put the particles at an initial height of 20km? What if you had
strong winds that "carried" the particles say at 20mph in the horizontal direction. How much area
would the ash cover? Assume the density of Iodine to be about 4.9g/cc.

Company History
Founded in 1965, the mail-order veterinary supply business, UPCO, changed its name to
Petstore in 1979. The business started in San Diego, California and expanded all the way to
Oregon by 1980, creating 40 retail store locations. By 1988, Petstore had acquired two smaller
pet supply chains and more than tripled its number of store locations, entering the Washington
and Texas markets. Live animals were introduced in the late 80s as well. By 1992, Petstore had
opened its first East Coast stores in New Jersey and coined their signature phrase, “Where the
Pets Go.”
By 1994, Petstore was the largest pet specialty retailer, operating in 13 states with 218
stores. They went public under the ticker symbol PETC. The company has gone back and forth
from being publicly traded to privately held. It was bought out by Leonard Green Partners and
Texas Pacific Group in 2000, but again went public in 2002. The company became privately
held again in 2006 by investment groups led by TPG. Ten years later, the company was acquired
by CVC Capital Partners and Can.

NO WAY, I SAID TO MYSELF. We’re not going to let ABC News
barge into the R. W. Beckett Corporation, shoot a lot of footage,
extract a few sound bites and say whatever they want to say about
us on national TV!
So went my reasoning as I hung up after the phone call from
ABC’s headquarters in New York. After all, hadn’t they told me
they were considering other companies they could feature? Why
us? It would just be an intrusion, and for what benefit? In fact,
the wrong kind of coverage could be damaging.
The news team had learned about the Beckett Corporation a
year earlier. I had spearheaded a national effort, taking issue with
the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC) after
the agency had issued a set of guidelines many thought would
restrict religious freedom in the workplace—such as the right to
display a poster for a religious event or sing Christmas carols at
a company dinner. National media had run stories on the result-
ing controversy. Now ABC News was following up with our
company, wanting to learn more of how we were relating our faith
to our business practices.

did a satirical feature story on our company, lampooning some
of our most important values. On the title page I was piously
caricatured in a robe and a halo—not the most endearing way for
a CEO to be profiled to the greater Cleveland business commu-
nity! I didn’t want something like that to happen again, especially
in front of a national TV audience.
But ABC needed an immediate reply. As reluctant as I was to
agree, something that had happened earlier that day gave me
pause. In a planning meeting with our senior management team,
I had talked about how we could do a better job of making an
impact on the marketplace with our core values, such as integrity
and excellence. I had referred to a verse from the Bible that speaks
about our being salt and light in the world, “a city on a hill [that]
cannot be hidden.” As I recalled that discussion, I decided it
would be hypocritical not to think seriously about ABC’s request.
We weren’t going to scatter much salt or shed much light if we
yanked the welcome mat from Peter Jennings, America’s most
widely watched news anchor.
The day after our affirmative reply, ABC’s news team arrived
at the company—a camera crew from Chicago, a producer
from New York, and Peggy Wehmeyer, a correspondent from

Organization plays a central role in a persuasive speech: The speech must logically establish why the audience must change. (Unless audience members believe there is something wrong with what they are doing or feeling, they are unlikely to change.) Although other persuasive designs are also effective in preempting psychological resistance to change, the most widely used organizational pattern for public speaking is Monroe’s motivated sequence.
1. Gain the audience’s attention. Attention getters grab the audience, arousing
Curiosity about what the speaker is going to say. To help avoid the effects of psychological resistance, the preview statement should be omitted.
2. Identify unfulfilled needs. The speaker must establish a clear, urgent, and unfulfilled
Need in the mind of the audience. This is a critical step in the sequence. No solutions should be proposed during this stage.
3. Propose a solution that satisfies. Present the solution to the needs or problems described in Step 2. During this stage, speakers must also identify and eliminate possible objections to the solution.
4. Visualize the resulting satisfaction. Intensify audience members’ desire for the solution by getting them to visualize what their lives will be like once they’ve adopted it. Use vivid images and verbal illustrations to support the benefits of the proposed solution.
5. Define specific actions. In the final step, the speaker must turn the audience’s agreement and commitment into positive action. Tell audience members what they need to do to obtain the described solution and its benefits.
6. Making the most of Monroe’s motivated sequence: To make the most of Monroe’s motivated sequence, the steps should be followed in sequence. The sequence closely resembles a problem-solution organizational format, but it digresses from linear logic in several ways. In the attention-getter step, the structure deviates from linearity by noting potential objections and dispelling audience concerns or problems with a solution. The most critical principle in Monroe’s sequence is the identification of the audience’s needs before proposing a solution.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Problem 1: It’s raining . . .
Objects falling through the atmosphere will experience drag forces. In this exercise, you will
discover why smoke and ash take a long time to settle, why clouds seem to float, why rain falls,
etc. In this exercise, we will use the drag model and assume spherical particles so CD = 0.47. The
density of air is 1.2kg/m3, approximately.
A) The diameter of a typical rain drop is on the order of 0.5mm to 8.0mm. Use the drag model
to find out how long for a drop of water to fall 1 meter in the sky. The density of water is about
1.00g/cc (hint: compute the terminal velocity and use it to find out the time to fall 1 meter. Do
this for 0.5mm, 1.0mm, 2.0mm)
B) When there’s a forest fire or a volcano erupts, a lot of small particles are thrusted into the
atmosphere. These particles will reach terminal velocity rapidly and there are several categories.
They are denoted as PM50, PM2.5, etc. The number after PM is the particle size in micrometers.
PM2.5 means 2.5 micrometers or smaller. This is a dangerous category and can make people sick.
Compute the time it takes for these particles to fall from an initial height of about 9km. The range
of densities of the lighter particles is from 0.7g/cc to 2.45g/cc.
C) When a nuclear weapon detonates, the particles generated in the fall out can be as small as
10nm. How long will a sphere of Iodine-131 of diameter 10 nm, 100 nm, 1.0 micron, 20 microns
stay in the air if the "air burst" put the particles at an initial height of 20km? What if you had
strong winds that "carried" the particles say at 20mph in the horizontal direction. How much area
would the ash cover? Assume the density of Iodine to be about 4.9g/cc.

Company History
Founded in 1965, the mail-order veterinary supply business, UPCO, changed its name to
Petstore in 1979. The business started in San Diego, California and expanded all the way to
Oregon by 1980, creating 40 retail store locations. By 1988, Petstore had acquired two smaller
pet supply chains and more than tripled its number of store locations, entering the Washington
and Texas markets. Live animals were introduced in the late 80s as well. By 1992, Petstore had
opened its first East Coast stores in New Jersey and coined their signature phrase, “Where the
Pets Go.”
By 1994, Petstore was the largest pet specialty retailer, operating in 13 states with 218
stores. They went public under the ticker symbol PETC. The company has gone back and forth
from being publicly traded to privately held. It was bought out by Leonard Green Partners and
Texas Pacific Group in 2000, but again went public in 2002. The company became privately
held again in 2006 by investment groups led by TPG. Ten years later, the company was acquired
by CVC Capital Partners and Can.

NO WAY, I SAID TO MYSELF. We’re not going to let ABC News
barge into the R. W. Beckett Corporation, shoot a lot of footage,
extract a few sound bites and say whatever they want to say about
us on national TV!
So went my reasoning as I hung up after the phone call from
ABC’s headquarters in New York. After all, hadn’t they told me
they were considering other companies they could feature? Why
us? It would just be an intrusion, and for what benefit? In fact,
the wrong kind of coverage could be damaging.
The news team had learned about the Beckett Corporation a
year earlier. I had spearheaded a national effort, taking issue with
the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC) after
the agency had issued a set of guidelines many thought would
restrict religious freedom in the workplace—such as the right to
display a poster for a religious event or sing Christmas carols at
a company dinner. National media had run stories on the result-
ing controversy. Now ABC News was following up with our
company, wanting to learn more of how we were relating our faith
to our business practices.
I knew from earlier experiences with the media that we needed
to be cautious. I thought back to the time a regional magazine
did a satirical feature story on our company, lampooning some
of our most important values. On the title page I was piously
caricatured in a robe and a halo—not the most endearing way for
a CEO to be profiled to the greater Cleveland business commu-
nity! I didn’t want something like that to happen again, especially
in front of a national TV audience.
But ABC needed an immediate reply. As reluctant as I was to
agree, something that had happened earlier that day gave me
pause. In a planning meeting with our senior management team,
I had talked about how we could do a better job of making an
impact on the marketplace with our core values, such as integrity
and excellence. I had referred to a verse from the Bible that speaks
about our being salt and light in the world, “a city on a hill [that]
cannot be hidden.” As I recalled that discussion, I decided it
would be hypocritical not to think seriously about ABC’s request.
We weren’t going to scatter much salt or shed much light if we
yanked the welcome mat from Peter Jennings, America’s most
widely watched news anchor.
The day after our affirmative reply, ABC’s news team arrived
at the company—a camera crew from Chicago, a producer
from New York, and Peggy Wehmeyer, a correspondent from
Dallas.

Organization plays a central role in a persuasive speech: The speech must logically establish why the audience must change. (Unless audience members believe there is something wrong with what they are doing or feeling, they are unlikely to change.) Although other persuasive designs are also effective in preempting psychological resistance to change, the most widely used organizational pattern for public speaking is Monroe’s motivated sequence.
1. Gain the audience’s attention. Attention getters grab the audience, arousing
Curiosity about what the speaker is going to say. To help avoid the effects of psychological resistance, the preview statement should be omitted.
2. Identify unfulfilled needs. The speaker must establish a clear, urgent, and unfulfilled
Need in the mind of the audience. This is a critical step in the sequence. No solutions should be proposed during this stage.
3. Propose a solution that satisfies. Present the solution to the needs or problems described in Step 2. During this stage, speakers must also identify and eliminate possible objections to the solution.
4. Visualize the resulting satisfaction. Intensify audience members’ desire for the solution by getting them to visualize what their lives will be like once they’ve adopted it. Use vivid images and verbal illustrations to support the benefits of the proposed solution.
5. Define specific actions. In the final step, the speaker must turn the audience’s agreement and commitment into positive action. Tell audience members what they need to do to obtain the described solution and its benefits.
6. Making the most of Monroe’s motivated sequence: To make the most of Monroe’s motivated sequence, the steps should be followed in sequence. The sequence closely resembles a problem-solution organizational format, but it digresses from linear logic in several ways. In the attention-getter step, the structure deviates from linearity by noting potential objections and dispelling audience concerns or problems with a solution. The most critical principle in Monroe’s sequence is the identification of the audience’s needs before proposing a solution.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
