Phil 2101: Final Paper Guidelines: Approximately 5 pages, double spaced, 1” margins, 12 pt. font, to be submitted in hard copy at the time of the final exam. In explaining each author’s respective arguments, you should use quotes from the text, to justify your attributions. However, no outside sources should be used. No, bibliography is required, however, you should note in parentheses the page on which the quoted material is found (in either edition of the text). Ex: Nagel claims that arguing that evil is only the absence of good will not help to dispel the problem, for “facts are not altered or abolished by rebaptizing them” (p. 91). At least one page of the paper should be dedicated to your defense of the final question of each option. Option 1: Are there rational grounds for belief in God despite the existence of evil? Critically evaluate Nagel's argument for atheism against Swinburne's theodicy. Does Swinburne provide a sufficient response to the problem of evil in your view? Why or why not? Defend your answer. Option 2: Are human beings free and responsible agents? Weigh the argument for hard determinism (discussed by Ayer) against either Ayer or Frankfurt's soft determinist response and the libertarian argument posed by Taylor. Who has the best argument, in your view, and why? Defend your answer. Option 3: Mill alleges that morally correct actions are those that result in the greatest happiness for all affected? Is this true? Consider the objections to utilitarianism raised by the problem cases in Williams's "Critique of Utilitarianism" and/or the so-called Trolley Problem. Are these real problems for the theory or does the Utilitarian get the answer right even in these difficult cases? Defend your answer. (1) Abusive: To argue that proposals, assertions, or arguments must be false or dangerous because they originate with atheists, Christians, Muslims, communists, capitalists, the John Birch Society, Catholics, anti-Catholics, racists, anti-racists, feminists, misogynists (or any other group) is fallacious. This persuasion comes from irrational psychological transference rather than from an appeal to evidence or logic concerning the issue at hand. This is similar to the genetic fallacy, and only an anti-intellectual would argue otherwise.
(2) Circumstantial: To argue that an opponent should accept or reject an argument because of circumstances in his or her life. I’m going to argue that you have no free will. I’m going to argue for some other surprising things
too, for instance that death isn’t bad for you, taxation is immoral, and you can’t know anything
whatsoever about the world around you. I’m also going to argue for some things you’re probably
not going to like: that abortion is immoral, you shouldn’t eat meat, and God doesn’t exist.

Having completed the unit of philosophy of religion, you are now ready to respond to an article written by an actual atheist. This article titled “On Being an Atheist,” was written by H. J. McCloskey in 1968 for the journal Question. McCloskey is an Australian philosopher who wrote a number of atheistic works in the 1960s and 70s including the book God and Evil (Nijhoff, 1974). In this article, McCloskey is both critical of the classical arguments for God’s existence and offers the problem of evil as a reason why one should not believe in God. Please note the following parameters for this paper:
1. Your assignment is to read McCloskey’s short article found in the Reading & Study folder in Module/Week 7 and respond to each of the questions below. Your instructor is looking for a detailed response to each question.

The course will analyze and discuss a number of moral problems which are quite controversial in contemporary American society, including environmental ethics and animal rights, sexual morality, pornography and censorship, hate speech, abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, war and torture terrorism, global redistribution of wealth and welfare, racial and sexual equality and affirmative action,. The emphasis will be on weighing the arguments pro and con, and deciding which side has the best supporting grounds for its point of view. It is hoped that a more balanced and objective evaluation of the arguments on these moral issues will result from standing back and gaining some critical distance upon things upon which we might already have formed fixed positions and about which we might have strong feelings. The objective of the course will be to come to a deeper and broader understanding of these moral problems and to engage in critical reflection upon them through reading pertinent articles and through open discussion. In addition, the themes of diversity and inclusiveness will be critically and discussed with the aim of broadening the student’s horizon and encouraging respect for diverse points of view and backgrounds. The student will be expected to think for her/himself, developing her/his own position, and formulating arguments to support it on the basis of the ongoing debate. There will be three 6-7 page term papers upon any of the moral issues discussed in class. These paper assignments will be designed to teach the student how to write an argumentative type paper in keeping with the course designation as a core course. One of the most common inferences in life is the inference to the best explanation (sometimes called
abductive reasoning
). We use this type of reasoning to infer what would best explain the things that we see. Chapter 5 in our book demonstrates ways in which this type of reasoning helps us to explain the world around us.
Prepare
: Choose a topic that is difficult or controversial to explain. Some good topics include hoaxes, unusual sightings (e.g. UFOs, bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster), the supernatural or paranormal, events that are the subject of conspiracy theories, unsolved crimes or other court cases, etc.

: Do a little research to find a specific topic and learn about explanations on both sides. Consider what you think might best explain the observed facts of the case.
Write
: Explain the topic you chose and why it is interesting or controversial. Present good arguments on more than one side of the issue (e.g. competing explanations of the facts). Analyze both arguments that you have presented. Then present your own argument for your theory that you feel will best explain this phenomenon. Are there any holes in your theory? The course will analyze and discuss a number of moral problems which are quite controversial in contemporary American society, including environmental ethics and animal rights, sexual morality, pornography and censorship, hate speech, abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, war and torture terrorism, global redistribution of wealth and welfare, racial and sexual equality and affirmative action,. The emphasis will be on weighing the arguments pro and con, and deciding which side has the best supporting grounds for its point of view. It is hoped that a more balanced and objective evaluation of the arguments on these moral issues will result from standing back and gaining some critical distance upon things upon which we might already have formed fixed positions and about which we might have strong feelings. The objective of the course will be to come to a deeper and broader understanding of these moral problems and to engage in critical reflection upon them through reading pertinent articles and through open discussion. In addition, the themes of diversity and inclusiveness will be critically and discussed with the aim of broadening the student’s horizon and encouraging respect for diverse points of view and backgrounds. The student will be expected to think for her/himself, developing her/his own position, and formulating arguments to support it on the basis of the ongoing debate. There will be three 6-7 page term papers upon any of the moral issues discussed in class. These paper assignments will be designed to teach the student how to write an argumentative type paper in keeping with the course designation as a core course. Each paper will count for 30% of the final grade and the final 10% will be awarded for attendance and class participation. Attendance will be taken by means of an iPad App in each class meeting

Problem 1: It’s raining . . .
Objects falling through the atmosphere will experience drag forces. In this exercise, you will
discover why smoke and ash take a long time to settle, why clouds seem to float, why rain falls,
etc. In this exercise, we will use the drag model and assume spherical particles so CD = 0.47. The
density of air is 1.2kg/m3, approximately.
A) The diameter of a typical rain drop is on the order of 0.5mm to 8.0mm. Use the drag model
to find out how long for a drop of water to fall 1 meter in the sky. The density of water is about
1.00g/cc (hint: compute the terminal velocity and use it to find out the time to fall 1 meter. Do
this for 0.5mm, 1.0mm, 2.0mm)
B) When there’s a forest fire or a volcano erupts, a lot of small particles are thrusted into the
atmosphere. These particles will reach terminal velocity rapidly and there are several categories.
They are denoted as PM50, PM2.5, etc. The number after PM is the particle size in micrometers.
PM2.5 means 2.5 micrometers or smaller. This is a dangerous category and can make people sick.
Compute the time it takes for these particles to fall from an initial height of about 9km. The range
of densities of the lighter particles is from 0.7g/cc to 2.45g/cc.
C) When a nuclear weapon detonates, the particles generated in the fall out can be as small as
10nm. How long will a sphere of Iodine-131 of diameter 10 nm, 100 nm, 1.0 micron, 20 microns
stay in the air if the "air burst" put the particles at an initial height of 20km? What if you had
strong winds that "carried" the particles say at 20mph in the horizontal direction. How much area
would the ash cover? Assume the density of Iodine to be about 4.9g/cc.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
